1 AT A GLANCE CTS offers 4 Masterslevel degree programs and 3 Doctorate-level degrees 350 students represent 29 states, 14 countries, and 37 denominations and religious traditions The faculty consists of 30 men and women of academic excellence, pastoral concern, and wide ecclesiastical experience ABOUT COLUMBIA THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY From the time of its founding in Lexington, Georgia, in 1828, Columbia has been committed to training persons for leadership in the church of Jesus Christ. Throughout its history, Columbia has nurtured, and has been nurtured by, the Presbyterian Church (USA) in the South; this connection continues to be a cherished tradition. While Columbia now enjoys an outstanding national and international reputation, it also faithfully upholds its historic covenants with the Synods of Living Waters and South Atlantic. In 1830, Columbia, South Carolina, became the first permanent location of the Seminary. The school became popularly known as Columbia Theological Seminary, and the name was formally accepted in The decade of the 1920s saw a shift in population throughout the Southeast. Atlanta was becoming a commercial and industrial center and growing rapidly in its cultural and educational opportunities. Between 1925 and 1930, President Richard T. Gillespie provided leadership that led to the development of the present facilities on a 57-acre tract in Decatur, Georgia. Columbia experienced substantial growth under the leadership of Dr. J. McDowell Richards, who was elected president in 1932 and led the Seminary for almost four decades. Following Dr. Richards retirement in 1971, Dr. C. Benton Kline served five years as Columbia s president. In January 1976, Dr. J. Davison Philips assumed the presidency; he retired eleven years later. Dr. Douglas W. Oldenburg became the Seminary s seventh president in January In August 2000, Dr. Laura S. Mendenhall began her service as Columbia s eighth president. She served nine years and was succeeded in July 2009, by Dr. Stephen A. Hayner, who had been a member of the faculty since As of July 2015, our new president is Dr. Leanne Van Dyk. MISSION Columbia Theological Seminary exists to educate and nurture faithful, imaginative, and effective leaders for the sake of the Church and the world.

2 DECATUR, GEORGIA Decatur is a friendly, beautiful town with great schools, excellent resources, and close to downtown Atlanta. It is a college town of just under 20,000 residents, home to Columbia Theological Seminary as well as Agnes Scott College and Emory University nearby. Decatur features a vibrant downtown filled with independent shops, outstanding restaurants, and hip music scene. Atlanta s museums, galleries, music venues, and restaurants are nearby. The town is accessible by the MARTA rail system for easy trips into metro Atlanta or to Hartsfield- Jackson International Airport. THE COLUMBIA COMMUNITY Our campus is a residential community for students and faculty on a 57-acre site six miles east of downtown Atlanta. Our new student residence hall and our new Vernon S. Broyles Jr. leadership building are both LEED certified gold. Columbia is a campus and a neighborhood. The Columbia community is distinctive in that many faculty and staff members live in 21 seminary-owned houses on streets encircling the campus. The warmth of community life is one of the Seminary s great strengths. Columbia emphasizes the value of family to give students a sense of home. Children are an integral part of community life and participate in many activities held throughout the year. The Seminary provides a playscape and picnic area in the Village apartment community where children make friends among those with whom they live, play, and go to school. Many excellent day care programs are available in the Decatur area. Frequently, spouses of Columbia students offer child-care services in their homes on campus. Children living on campus are in the City Schools of Decatur school district, which consistently perform above the state and national averages on standardized tests at all grade levels.

3 POSITION OVERVIEW The position of Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA) requires a person who can work closely with the President and team with her to continue to cultivate friends and donors for the Seminary. This individual must be a seasoned development professional with highly developed leadership skills. In addition to leading the Annual Fund campaign and major donor cultivation and solicitation, the VPIA ensures strong alumni and church relations. Columbia is one of ten Presbyterian Church (USA) seminaries. While its donor base is primarily in the southeastern United States, its constituency is national, and potential for advancement growth is great. The school s last campaign totaled $65 million, supporting necessary capital improvements and endowments for student support, faculty, and programs. The VPIA will lead an office that includes Development, Annual Fund, Planned Giving and Alumni Relations staff. Currently the communications office also reports through the VPIA; however, the organization of the Seminary s communications and marketing efforts are under review. The new VPIA will be an integral part of that discussion.

4 SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES The VPIA plans, implements, and directs programs and projects to secure financial and other support for Columbia Theological Seminary by clearly articulating the Seminary s goals, priorities, and needs to its internal and external constituencies. This position reports directly to the President. The VPIA will help all Seminary personnel and Board members to be productively involved in the Advancement Office s efforts to increase generosity to the Seminary. Provide administrative leadership, direction, and coordination to the Seminary Institutional Advancement department, including development and donor relations, alumni/ae relations and planned giving. Determine, analyze, and prioritize goals and objectives for future seminary financial needs and corresponding development work. Plan and conduct a capital campaign or campaigns for facilities, endowment and other needs as determined by the President and Board of Trustees. Conduct personal cultivation and solicitation of large and planned gifts. Meet Annual Fund goals. Present the Seminary s message in a compelling way to foundations, individuals, churches, corporations, and other entities. Serve on the President s Leadership Council and work closely in coordination with the President and Board of Trustees to advance the mission of Columbia Theological Seminary. EXPERIENCE & SKILLS REQUIRED A deeply committed Christian. Understanding of and commitment to theological education. Presbyterian Church (USA) membership preferred. Bachelor s degree required; advanced degree preferred. Substantive experience in fundraising and capital campaigns. Office leadership and business management experience preferred. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Significant experience recruiting and inspiring volunteers. Commitment to building and working in a team environment. Strong competencies in diverse multi-ethnic and multi-cultural settings.
