Chapter 5 Connecting to the Internet How do I connect to the Internet? When you open the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, it automatically searches for the fastest available network. The network appears in the top left of the screen. To view a list of other available networks, select the option Show/Hide Signal List. The list is arranged in order of signal strength. The networks at the top of the list are Preferred Networks, indicated with a tick. In the Netherlands, this is always the KPN network. It may also be a network with which KPN has an agreement, or a HotSpot that you have added to your Preferred HotSpots. To connect to the automatically located network, click on the blue Connect button. To connect to another network, click on the grey Connect button next to the relevant network. This network will now appear in the top left of the screen. Always use the Mobiel Internet Dashboard to connect and disconnect to the Internet, so that you can be sure that the session has been ended in the proper way. To end the session, click Disconnect. Note: - It is possible that, when you open the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, it does not indicate the same network as your modem. For example, you see on the screen that you are connected to the GPRS network, but your Mobiel Internet Kaart indicator shows that you are connected to the UMTS network. This is because it takes several seconds for the Dashboard to give the correct network indication. Your Mobiel Internet Kaart always indicates the network you are connected to at a given time. - It may be the case that you have already selected preferred WiFi networks in Windows, before you started using the Mobiel Internet Dashboard. If this is the case, when you open the Dashboard, you will be connected to a HotSpot. This can be confusing because it is not clear which HotSpot you are connected to. If you do not want to use this automatic function, you can delete the setting manually via Wireless Networks in Windows. Connecting to secure HotSpots Some HotSpots use security protocols such as WEP, which encrypts the data you send over the Wi-Fi network. HotSpots of this type are indicated with a icon in the list of available networks. You will need a security code to access these HotSpots. This code is known to the owner of the HotSpot, and you must enter it in Hexadecimal characters (0-9, A-F) when prompted. If you add the HotSpot to your Preferred HotSpots, you can save the security code and other security settings so that the Mobiel Internet Dashboard automatically enters the required security code when you click on the network to make a connection. This makes the connection process faster and simpler. Selecting a network abroad When you are abroad, you can select the network you wish to be connected to. In the Options menu of the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, select HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS, then Change HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS Operator Abroad. A list of all the available networks is displayed on the screen. Networks with which KPN has an agreement (Preferred Networks) have cheaper rates, and are at the top of the list. Networks that do not provide a Packet-Switched connection are indicated with CSD only. On these networks, only Circuit- Switched (CSD) connections are possible. A Packet-Switched connection sends your data in short bursts (packets). A Circuit-Switched connection sends your data in a constant stream along a circuit that remains active until all data have been sent. Select a network and click Save. Information about the new network will appear in the HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS information in the Mobiel Internet Dashboard. To connect to this new network, select the network from the list and click Connect. A pop-up will remind you that roaming tariffs apply when you use a network outside the Netherlands. Mobiel Internet If you use the Mobiel Internet service, you can choose between two connections: Internet Fast Internet The Fast Internet connection automatically uses the KPN Mobile Data Accelerator. If you do not wish to use the accelerator, choose the normal connection. To select the connection, go to the Options menu of the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, then go to HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS Options. Select the required connection from the pull-down menu under Current Profile and click Save

Adding a new profile When you installed the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, you created a profile. You can create more than one profile. This can be helpful if you frequently make connections with different settings. To add a new profile, go to HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS in the Options menu of the Mobiel Internet Dashboard. Select HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS Options and click New Profile. Enter the profile name and click OK. When you have done this, first edit the WAN settings, and then the TCP-IP settings. A window will appear automatically so that you can change these settings. Your telecom manager or service provider has the details of the settings. Editing an existing profile To edit an existing profile, go to the Options menu in the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, then go to HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS. Select HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS Options and choose the profile you require from the pull-down menu. Click Edit Profile. Change the WAN settings first, then change the TCP/IP settings (see the section Adding a new profile ). To save the changes and/or new profile, click Save. Choose Cancel to exit without saving the changes. Deleting a profile To delete a profile, go to the Options menu of the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, then to HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS. Select HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS Options and choose the profile you wish to delete from the pull-down list. Click Delete Profile. Then click OK to confirm deletion. Click Cancel if you decide not to delete the profile. WAN settings: Mode: indicates the type of connection you wish to make. Packet-Switched mode sends your data in short bursts (packets). Circuit-Switched mode sends your data in a constant stream along a circuit that remains active until all data have been sent. Circuit-switched mode is advisable for connecting to company networks. Dial String: enter the dial properties User name and Password APN: enter the APN (Access Point Name) Init String: enter an initialization string, if required. TCP/IP settings: Dynamic DNS: tick the relevant box. Static DNS: tick the relevant box. Enter a valid DNS address to proceed. Dynamic IP Address: tick the relevant box. Static IP Address: tick the relevant box. Enter a valid IP address to proceed. Choose Save to exit and save the new profile. Choose Cancel to exit without saving the new profile. KPN Mobile Data Accelerator You can optimise your connection by adjusting the level of compression in the KPN Mobile Data Accelerator. To do this, go to the Options menu of the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, then to HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS and select Data Accelerator. You can select Automatic Optimization or change the level of compression manually. The Mobile Data Accelerator (MDA) speeds up data transmission over the network. The MDA software compresses the data you upload or download, enabling faster and surfing on the Internet. For more information about the KPN Mobile Data Accelerator, visit kpn.com (keyword: Accelerator ). If you have more than one profile, choose Always prompt for Profile. This means that you can select the relevant profile every time you make a connection

Chapter 6 Wi-Fi networks and HotSpots What is a HotSpot? A HotSpot, or access point, is a location where mobile broadband connections are provided. HotSpots are usually found in public places such as airports, hotels and conference centres. At a HotSpot you have access to the Internet via a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network), also known as a Wi-Fi network. At a HotSpot, to give a few examples, you can send and receive s, update your calendar, enter purchase orders or check stock levels. In order to access a Wi-Fi network from a HotSpot, your laptop must have a Wi-Fi card. This can be a card that you insert in your laptop (e.g. Mobiel Internet Kaart ), a USB card with Wi-Fi, or a modem built into your laptop. Editing HotSpot settings You can edit your HotSpot settings according to the Wi-Fi card you use. Go to the Options menu in the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, and then choose Wi-Fi. Select HotSpot Options and choose the relevant Wi-Fi modem from the pull-down menu. Click Save to save the new settings. 2. If you are at a public HotSpot: click straightaway on Connect in the Mobiel Internet Dashboard A message will be displayed stating that you have not yet entered a user name, and you will be given the opportunity to register. When you have agreed to the conditions, click Register. A user name and password will be requested for you automatically, based on your Mobiel Internet Kaart subscription. A message will be displayed when the registration is complete. Click on OK to finalise the registration. The details will be saved automatically in the Mobiel Internet Dashboard. Preferred HotSpots You can add a HotSpot to your Preferred HotSpots. If you do this, you will receive a pop-up alert when you are in the vicinity of the HotSpot, allowing you to connect quickly and easily to the HotSpot. HotSpot user name and password You will need a user name and password to use a public HotSpot. If you do not have these, you will not be able to access these paid HotSpots. You can request a user name and password via the Mobiel Internet Dashboard. You can do this in two ways: 1. If you do not have a KPN HotSpot account: go to the Options menu in the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, and then go to Wi-Fi. Select KPN HotSpot Account, and then click Create Account. A user name and password will be requested for you automatically, and processed directly on the screen. Choose Save to save the user name and password. Choose Cancel if you do not wish to save them. You must be connected to the Internet for this process. If you have a KPN HotSpot Account, but have not saved the user name and password, a reminder will be displayed when you try to use a public HotSpot. Choose Edit and enter your details in the KPN HotSpot Account screen. Adding a HotSpot to your Preferred HotSpots When you connect to a new HotSpot, a message will appear asking you whether you want to add it to your Preferred HotSpots. To do this, click OK. The browser screen opens and you will be connected to the Internet via the Wi-Fi network of the relevant HotSpot. If you do not wish to add the HotSpot to your favourites, click Cancel. You are still connected to the network, but it will not be added to your Preferred HotSpots. You can also add a HotSpot to your Preferred HotSpots via the Mobiel Internet Dashboard. The HotSpots are displayed with the following details: name, address, tariff category and location type. KPN currently has three tariff categories: A: KPN Basic B: KPN International C: KPN Premium The latest tariffs can be found at: kpn.com, search word Wi-Fi. For the latest lists, go directly to KPN s online HotSpot finder via the link Online network search at the top right of the screen. These can also be found at kpn.com, search word Bedekking (Coverage). Updates When you connect to a HotSpot, you may sometimes receive the message Update Available. You will be asked whether you want an update of the list of available networks in your Mobiel Internet Dashboard. These updates enable you to add the latest information to your database. If you choose Yes to update your database, you will receive a message when the update has been completed. During a data session, you can see whether new versions are available. Select Check for updates from the Help menu

Troubleshooting: HotSpot log-in problems The following problems may occur when you log in to a HotSpot: You are automatically logged-in when you open the Mobiel Internet Dashboard. Why is this? You have added the HotSpot to your Preferred HotSpots in the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, and you have indicated that you wish to log in automatically to that HotSpot. To disable this function, go to the Options menu, then Wi-Fi, then Preferred HotSpots. Click on the relevant HotSpot, then Edit, and change the connection mode from Automatic to Prompt (pop-up). A connection is made to a HotSpot before you have opened the Mobiel Internet Dashboard because the HotSpot is listed as one of the Preferred Networks in Microsoft Wireless Network Connections. You will automatically receive a Windows message (see figure). You can change this by deleting the Preferred Networks in Microsoft Wireless Internet Connections. You can also add these networks to the Mobiel Internet Dashboard (see section on Adding a HotSpot to your Preferred HotSpots ). The Mobiel Internet Dashboard will recognise these connections, and you can log in automatically via the Mobiel Internet Dashboard. The Mobiel Internet Dashboard shows that you are connected (the main screen shows that you have a Wi-Fi connection. You can click Disconnect ). When you open Internet Explorer, the start page of the HotSpot owner is displayed and you have to re-enter your details (user name and password). There are four possible reasons: The Mobiel Internet Dashboard allows you to log in automatically to many public HotSpots. Click on Connect to access the Internet. If you cannot log in automatically, you will be redirected to the start page of the HotSpot owner. You need to enter your user name and password to access the Internet. You have not yet entered your HotSpot details in the Mobiel Internet Dashboard. When you click on Connect (for Wi-Fi) a screen will appear indicating that you have not yet entered your details. You can enter your details on this screen. Click on Edit You have not yet requested a HotSpot user name and password. When you click on Connect (for Wi-Fi), a screen appears with the message that you have not yet entered your details. You can register via this screen. Click Register (see figure above). A user name and password will be requested, and saved automatically in the Mobiel Internet Dashboard. How can I delete preferred HotSpots from Microsoft Wireless Network Connections? Follow the steps below to remove preferred HotSpots from Microsoft Wireless Connections: 1. Click on the Wireless Network icon in the task bar (see illustration above). The following screen will appear: 2. Select Properties, then the tab Wireless Networks. 3. Under Preferred Networks, select the Wi-Fi network for which automatic log-in via Windows is no longer required, and click on Delete. It is advisable to do this for all Preferred Networks, and then enter them as Preferred HotSpots in the Mobiel Internet Dashboard

Chapter 7 The SMS Center You can use the SMS (Short Message Service) Center to send and receive short text messages (up to 160 alphanumeric characters) and update contact details. The Mobiel Internet Kaart (or other device - HSDPA, UMTS or GPRS) must be connected to the laptop before you can use the SMS Center. To reply to a message, select the message from the list and click Reply. Type your reply, then send it or save it as a draft. To view the draft messages you have saved, go to the Drafts folder. Double-click on the relevant message to open it. You can now edit, save or send the message. Note: Not all modems support the SMS Center. If the installed device does not support this function, you will not be able to click on the Mobiel Internet Dashboard shortcut. Reading SMS messages To open the SMS Center, click on the quick-launch button or go to Tools and select SMS Center. To read new messages, choose Inbox in the main screen of the SMS Center. The selected messages can be read in the window. When you receive an SMS, you will receive an alert in the form of a pop-up. If you then open the Inbox as described above, it may take several seconds for the new message to appear in the Inbox. Note: When you use a mobile device as a modem, the messages are displayed in the SMS Center, but also remain on the SIM card in the device. When you use a Mobiel Internet Kaart, the messages are stored on its SIM card. Undeliverable messages If a message is not delivered, you will receive a notification. Undeliverable messages are moved to the Drafts folder. Importing telephone numbers To import the telephone numbers on your (U)SIM card into the SMS Center, open the SMS Center in the main screen of the Mobiel Internet Dashboard. Select Contacts, then Import Contacts. The contacts on your SIM card will now be imported and stored in your address book. If there are no numbers stored on your (U)SIM card, you can import the numbers stored on the GSM-SIM card in your mobile telephone. Import from Outlook 1. Open the SMS Center 2. Click the grey button Contacts in the SMS Center menu to open the (Windows) Address Book. 3. Select File, Import, then Address Book (WAB). 4. Select the information to be imported, then click Open. The SMS Center will now use the imported addresses. Sending SMS messages Click on the quick-launch button or go to Tools and select SMS Center. To send an SMS message, choose New. In the field next to To, enter the telephone number of the recipient. To send an SMS to more than one person, enter all the telephone numbers and separate them with a comma (e.g , ). As you type an SMS message, the number of characters and the number of messages is shown at the bottom of the screen. If you enter more than 160 characters, the number of messages to be sent will change from 1 to 2. This means that the text is too long to send as a single message. When you have typed your message, click Send to send it. To save the message without sending it, click Save as Draft

Chapter 8 The Usage Meter You can set a limit for the amount of data or the length of time of the data session. When you reach this limit, you will be notified by means of a pop-up. Note: the pop-up is only a reminder; it does not mean that you cannot proceed. The Usage Meter registers HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS usage in MB, and HotSpot usage in minutes. The minimum session length for HotSpots is 15 minutes. Configuring the Usage Meter To set your usage limits, go to the Options menu of the Mobiel Internet Dashboard and select Usage Meter Options. To configure usage meters for HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS or HotSpots, simply click in the box next to the relevant network, then enter your limits in MB or minutes. When you have entered the limits, click Save. Click Cancel to exit without saving the limits. If you have uninstalled the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, you will have lost your usage data. The Usage Meter will then be set at zero again. Note: The Usage Meter shows PSD usage in MBs as standard, and shows HotSpot usage in minutes. If you also require CSD information, you need to set a limit. When you have done this, the CSD information will be visible in the Usage Meter. Chapter 9 Warning 1: Warning 2: Quick uninstall Uninstalling the Mobiel Internet Dashboard Always restart your laptop after uninstalling the Mobiel Internet Dashboard, even if the computer does not prompt you to do so. When you uninstall the Dashboard you will lose all information on data usage. The Mobiel Internet Dashboard can, like any other application on a laptop, be uninstalled via Settings > Configuration > Software. You can also launch this process by choosing > Mobiel Internet Dashboard > Uninstall in the Start menu. After this process, the Mobiel Internet Dashboard icon may still be on your desktop. To delete the icon, drag-and-drop it to the Recycle Bin. Full uninstall In may be the case that the uninstall process has not uninstalled all software components. To ensure that all components are removed, follow the steps below: 1. Delete the folders C:\Program Files\Common Files\Gearbox Runtime and C:\Program Files\KPN Mobiel Internet (if these still exist). 2. Clean up the registry: a. Open the Registry Editor (Start Run regedit) b. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ins c. Click on Default and change the value data from CoreWorks_Reg_Handler to x-internet-signup d. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software and delete the entire Rockstar_Software key
