13 Texas Market and ZSE Interoperability ZigFesTx First quarter, 2010, worked out details & test plans May, 2010, CenterPoint & Oncor (with respective meter vendors), and the ZigBee Alliance held the first 3 day event in Ft. Worth Code was written on the spot Success (in many cases) was a successful pairing with a meter 5 additional events were held in 2010 Progress was fast and dramatic 13
14 Texas ZigFest Results Allowed many manufacturers their first opportunity to work with commercial meters Allowed all parties to quickly find and resolve firmware issues (meters and HAN devices) Identified different interpretations and areas for new features in ZigBee Smart Energy version 1.0 Issues discovered were fed back into CCBs that were incorporated into ZigBee Smart Energy version

18 Stage I: Product Requirements Purpose: The Product Requirements outline minimum features to be compatible/eligible for BC Hydro systems and programs. Process: This has been created with input from Internal teams (technology, conservation, procurement, marketing) External contacts in industry External counterparts in other utilities, standards organizations Reviewed hundreds of features and considerations, narrowed them down to a manageable set (abt. 40 items) Outcome: Completed preliminary Requirements 18
19 Stage II: Vendor Engagement Purpose: Gain feedback from the market, revise, communicate our plans Process: Vendor workshops to review Requirements, describe program details, share customer research, retail partner conversations, review the program, customer adoption patterns, messaging Content: o Sanity Check of Requirements and overall program o Deep dives into specific Requirements o Engagement, relationship building Outcome: Requirements and testing program finalized, communicated 19

29 The World Before ZigBee Smart Energy Each manufacturer implemented their own proprietary method of OTA upgradability Many didn t offer any remote upgrade at all Cooperation and joint development was required for support by meters or gateway vendors Mixed networks are extremely difficult to manage Many gateway providers implemented work around methods of enhancing features or addressing issues 29
