2 Background curbi is a Parental Control system for families with ios devices. curbi provides the following features: rules based access control content can be blocked according to parent specified rules content blocking specific content categories can be permanently blocked by the parent usage all content coming to the device is logged so that parents can see what is going on content filtering all content for all apps on the device is filtered by curbi apps all apps installed on the device are visible to the parent restrictions ios restrictions can be remotely managed by the parent. curbi delivers these features through the use of the Apple Mobile Device Management (MDM) protocols and an on demand Virtual Private Network (VPN). curbi has become very popular with schools running 1:1 ipad programs as well as schools running open BYOD programs. Overview curbi has been designed to work well in any school environment. We have developed curbi to automatically switch off its content filtering VPN when it joins a designated school network. For schools that run their own MDM system, curbi works in a slightly different way. For schools with no MDM, curbi works as per usual. 3 curbi Standard Mode For schools with no MDM system, curbi operates as per usual for parents. The only step a parent needs to take is going into the curbi management app (iphone, ipad or Web), select the device that is going to be used at school and select the school. Any managed device can be flagged for school access. This includes student ipads and iphones. curbi School Mode Schools that run their own MDM solution are also catered for. Apple devices can only connect to one MDM system at a time, so curbi has a special School Mode which does not require curbi MDM enrollment. Instead of enrolling the device in the curbi MDM solution, School Mode uses the curbi4schools app to help manage the device. curbi4schools ipad app curbi4schools needs to be installed as part of a device s curbi School Mode enrollment. curbi uses the curbi4schools app to check that the device is working correctly and being monitored by curbi. Device Enrolment Process School Mode uses the following enrolment process. On the device to be managed, the following steps are taken Download the curbi4schools app Open curbi4schools Log in to the curbi4schools app with the parent s curbi account details Follow the installation prompts Once the parent has completed the enrollment process, curbi then: Monitors all network traffic to and from the device and enforces rules Automatically stops monitoring network traffic when on the school network Uses the curbi4schools app to check that the curbi VPN profile is installed and operating correctly. Features In School Mode, the following curbi Standard Mode features are not available: Application list curbi cannot see installed apps Restrictions curbi cannot modify device Restrictions curbi for Schools Page 3 of 7

4 Correcting VPN bypass attempts curbi cannot automatically correct any VPN bypass attempts Alerts Should the VPN profile be found to be not working, the parent will receive an from curbi asking them to re install the VPN profile. This will be done by simply opening curbi4schools on the managed ipad and following the prompts. If the curbi4schools app is deleted from the device, the parent will be alerted to re install the app. Costs There is no charge to the school for registering with curbi. Parent payment Parents are able to opt in to use curbi as they wish. curbi has a Free Trial after which it will cost $7 per month for a household of up to 5 devices. Parents will be responsible for this cost. School licensing Schools can also choose to licence curbi for site wide use where the school pays the yearly curbi fee rather than individual parents. In this case Parents still sign up for curbi themselves but they will not be charged directly. Support curbi support is provided 5 days a week via . Schools do not need to be involved in the support process. Parents will be able to manage devices in Standard and School Mode from the one curbi account. This means that parents can have school ipads on the same account as their child s iphone which would be running in Standard Mode. A parent can even be operating school ipads from different schools all on the one account. What next? To register for curbi go to sign up. Alternatively, you can just us at schools@curbi.com. 6 APPENDIX 1: curbi Implementation Process The curbi Implementation Process is provided to help schools plan their curbi project. Step Description Register for Trial Contact us and provide your school Wifi networks to be ignored by curbi and your public facing IP address/es. We will register your school for curbi and provide you with the link to the curbi4schools app and curbi CA. At this point you should decide whether you will deploy curbi4schools and the curbi CA to managed ipads or let parents download curbi4schools directly to the ipads. Carry out Trial Select a group of students to trial curbi and provide their parents with the curbi installation instructions. curbi for Schools Page 6 of 7

7 We recommend a trial of one week s duration to ensure everything works as expected. Prepare for Rollout At this point we provide you with curbi support and marketing material to help you promote curbi to your school community. Rollout curbi Most schools provide a curbi update via their regular newsletter and directly from their parent facing web site.
