Our aim is to promote academic cooperation world wide, especially through the exchange of students, scholars and scientists. To achieve this, we offer information and advice and a number of support and scholarship programmes. If you happen to have the opportunity to do research in a laboratory in Germany, you may well have the chance to meet a future Nobel Prize winner. This year Stefan W. Hell, researcher and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. He shares the prize with Eric Betzig and William E. Moerner, both from the US. Germany is one of the world's leading address for research and home to a unique network of universities and non-university research institutions which cooperate closely with business and industry. Having joined the German Foreign Office just days before German reunification in 1990, Mr. Fischer is already a seasoned diplomat with postings in Pakistan, the U.S. and Jordan. Holding a Master's degree in political science from Distance Learning University in Hagen, he has vast experience in all aspects of bilateral relation issues, most recently as Cultural Attaché of the German Embassy in Amman. "The academic cooperation of our two countries has gained considerable momentum", Mr. Fischer says. "Within a year, the number of agreements between universities rose from 65 to over 80. And they are also reaching a new quality, with more double degree programmes in place and a growing exchange of students, lecturers and flying faculty." Working closely with DAAD KL, Mr. Fischer has already participated in well-attended promotion events like the "Mini German Day" at UPM and the "International Day" at UMP. His goal is to bring the number of Malaysian students in Germany to well beyond and to further strengthen the network between academia and industry. Together with DAAD, he is eager to organize a landmark "German Day" at a Malaysian university in 2015 and to advertise Germany as a hub of excellent, yet affordable academic education. Prof. Spöttl, an expert in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET), received the award for supporting Malaysia with regards to the organisation of a National Training System and for assisting UTHM to develop its TVET- Faculty and research in this field. Since 2006, the Institute Technology and Education at the University of Bremen runs a double degree PhD-programme in 'Vocational Education' with UTHM, funded by the Malaysian Ministry of Human Resources. With their research work, the PhD-candidates contribute to the educational research in Malaysia and support the development of the Malaysian professional training scheme. This website offers a searchable database comprising all degree courses in Germany. In addition, the site gives detailed views of what life is like in Germany. Which university is the best for me? Visitors to our office frequently want to know which German university they should attend or which German university is the best one. However, there is no straightforward answer to this question as your best choice will depend primarily on factors determined by you. Would you prefer to study at a university with a strong research profile? Or are you looking for a taught course offering cutting-edge study conditions and teaching and learning methods? Should the university of your choice intensely cooperate with business and industry? Is it important for you that the university has a strong international orientation - or would you prefer it to be engaged in the region? The well known global rankings which rank universities in the league table format miss these questions. They do not allow you to choose the university which is best for you according to your preferences, but impose the preferences of the ranking-makers on you. There are two rankings which allow you to generate your own personalized ranking according to your needs: The already well established CHE-Ranking and the new U-Multirank. Looking for funds to study in Germany? This scholarship database lists funding opportunities for international students, graduates and postdocs offered by DAAD and 60 other German organisations. Would you like to do a PhD in Germany? German higher education and research institutions are constantly on the lookout for qualified international doctoral candidates. In the DAAD database, you will find PhD positions specifically for foreign applicants. PhDGermany - The platform for Doctoral Positions and Research Opportunities in Germany The CHE University ranking by the Centre of Higher Education is a comprehensive and detailed ranking of German higher education institutions. It includes 35 subjects and 250 university towns and allows you to create your own ranking with your own selection of criteria. Dimensions of the ranking comprise facts about study programmes, teaching, equipment, research, study conditions (based on the assessments of 250,000 students) as well as an evaluation of the reputation of the departments by professors of the individual subjects. You find the CHE Ranking at U-Multirank is a new international ranking of higher education institutions supported by the European Union. U-Multirank is multi-dimensional and userdriven. It includes the dimensions teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, international orientation and regional engagement. Based on empirical data U-Multirank allows you to develop your own personalised ranking by selecting indicators of your preference. U-Multirank covers more than 850 universities, 1,000 faculties and 5,000 study programmes from 74 countries. It provides an institutional ranking of whole institutions as well as fieldbased rankings for electrical and mechanical engineering, business studies and physics. The IDC is a training course in higher education management run jointly by the DAAD, the German Rectors Conference (HRK), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) and Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. The attendees came from Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Timor- Leste and Vietnam. Professionalisation in higher education and research management is not only a challenge in Germany, but constitutes a global trend, stated project leader Professor Dr. Peter Mayer of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, explaining the reason for the course. Areas such as human resources management, financial Participants in the IDC management, marketing and internationalisation are nowadays often the responsibility of the faculty management. Consequently, deans are at the interface between individual scholars and university management. Host and trainer: Prof. Andanastuti Muchtar from UKM and Prof. Peter Mayer from UAS Osnabrück jointly work to strenghten university management. IDC, which is divided into three sections, takes place annually, one year for deans from Africa and the next year for deans from Southeast Asian countries. This June, the participants spent two weeks in Osnabrück and Berlin. IDC uses lectures, individual work, group work and workshops to convey the skills required to manage universities successfully.
