Beginnings NT Server started in 1988, with a small team (Lucovsky) Within a year, the development team grew to over 50 people. By 1990, port to i386 version began, work begins on 32 bit API and Microsoft decides to move away from OS/2 The first viable version was ready in 1994 (v. 3.5) 2

Microsoft and Novell Novell dominated the server market in the early 1990s Microsoft made it s own Netware client starting with Microsoft NT 3.1 NT 4 arrives in 1996 and Microsoft starts to make significant gains on Novell s share of the server market With the arrival of Windows 2k in 2000, Novell is a niche player 3

1993: Windows Advanced Server 3.1 First dedicated server that provided the power, scalability and standards based interoperability required for enterprise level computing. Provided centralized application, security and network management Functioned as application server for Novell NetWare, Banyon VINES as well as Microsoft clients. 1997: Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Improved performance and scalability Microsoft Transaction Server and Microsoft Message Queue Server October 1998, Microsoft announced that NT suffix would be dropped and that the next major OS version would be knows as Windows 2000 10

2000: Windows 2000 Server Family February, 2000, Windows 2000 is announced. Windows 2000 Server, 2000 Advanced Server (web technologies) and Windows 2000 Datacenter Server 2000 Server introduced Active Directory and a new high performance web server featuring ASP, COM+ and XML support. 11

2003: Windows 2003 Server Announced in April, 2003. First server to feature built-in.net functionality and a full 64 bit version. Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, Datacenter Edition and Web Edition. 12

2003: 64-Bit Operating Systems Windows 2003 Enterprise and Datacenter versions come as an optional 64 bit version. Designed specifically for 64 bit Intel Itanium hardware. Breaks the 4GB memory barrier. 13

Windows 2003 Server As of March 28, 2005, all Windows Server 2003 operating systems ship with Service Pack 1. SP1 provides enhanced security, reliability, and simplified administration. In December 2005, Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter editions of Windows Server 2003 R2 were released. R2 offers enhancements to Active Directory and storage. 15

Active Directory Active directory is the directory service for Windows 2003 server. AD stores information about the objects on the network AD is a distributed service that can be spread out over several servers 19

Active Directory Cont. A directory service provides a centralized location to store information in a distributed environment about networked devices and the people who use them. A directory service also implements the services that make this information available to users, computers and applications. A directory service is both a database storage system (directory store) and a set of services that provide the means to securely add, modify, delete and locate data in the directory store. 20
