Abstract This solution guide covers IBM Storwize family products and IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) storage management with Microsoft System Center 2012 SP1 Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM). The combination provides powerful integrated remote storage management including discovery, tier classification, allocation, provisioning and snapshots. Additionally, the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) provider enables SCVMM storage area network (SAN) based virtual machine provisioning for faster deployment without impacting network resources. These capabilities are all included in the SMI-S provider which is built into the Storwize system software, and relies on the underlying Common Information Model (CIM) and SMI-S storage management API standards. Introduction The growing virtualization and private cloud trend continues to demand improved efficiency from both data centers and system administrators. Automation and simplified central administration are at the top of most IT management lists in an effort to maintain lower IT costs. Microsoft has developed SCVMM to address these needs based on the SMI-S standard, which allows storage and software vendors to develop tightly integrated solutions. This paper focuses on the storage management capabilities and includes detailed steps for configuring IBM Storwize systems for SCVMM management. The IBM Storwize family products and IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) all run the same code base, architecture and feature sets, and all systems are equally compliant with SMI-S standards that SCVMM relies on. Unlike many SMI-S providers, a separate installation or management system is not needed with the IBM SMI-S provider because it runs on the Storwize system, included with Storwize software version 7.0 and later. This single-tier design simplifies setup and administration, allowing direct communication between SCVMM or other storage management applications. You can find detailed information on IBM storage integration with SMI-S and CIM at: -s_main.html IBM systems This section describes the features of IBM Storwize family products and IBM System x servers. Storwize family products and SVC The IBM Storwize family products and SVC include the following storage systems. IBM Storwize V7000 IBM Storwize V7000 Unified combined block and file storage IBM Storwize V5000 IBM Storwize V3500 (China) IBM Storwize V3700 IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node IBM SAN Volume Controller models 1

This paper uses software and features that are common across all Storwize family products and SVC systems. The specific product features highlighted in this paper are IBM FlashCopy and the built-in SMI-S provider. The system used for proof of concept testing was IBM Storwize V7000. The IBM Storwize family products and SVC systems provide internal storage and also external storage virtualization, with the exception of Storwize V3700 which is internal only; making it possible to integrate with and manage existing heterogeneous storage along with the internal storage from a single interface. The web-based management GUI runs directly on the IBM Storwize family products and SVC systems and can be accessed by a web browser. Figure 1: IBM Storwize V7000 Each IBM Storwize family product consists of a control enclosure and optionally multiple expansion enclosures. This provides 3.5 inch or 2.5 inch serial-attached SCSI (SAS) drives for the internal storage. The SVC system does not support expansion enclosures or internal disk storage, but virtualizes external disk storage only. The systems now include support for clustering multiple Storwize family products of the same model together, allowing for additional scalability. The IBM Storwize family products and SVC also include a function called IBM System Storage Easy Tier. This takes advantage of the high performance solid-state drives (SSDs), by automatically moving the most active data from hard disk drives (HDDs) to SSDs using a very sophisticated algorithm. In addition, there is also a full array of features including: 8 Gbps Fibre Channel, 1 Gbps iscsi, or optionally 10 GbE iscsi Seamless data migration to internal or external arrays Thin provisioning, volume mirroring, and thin mirroring Global Mirror and Metro Mirror replication, FlashCopy with 256 targets, cascaded, incremental, space efficient (thin provisioned) Integration with IBM Tivoli Productivity Center You can find more detailed information about IBM Storwize family products and SVC systems at: ibm.com/systems/storage/disk System x servers IBM System x servers can deliver the performance and reliability required for virtualizing mission-critical applications on Hyper-V and Microsoft Failover Clustering. To provide the required performance in a virtualized environment, IBM System x3650 M3 servers were equipped with two 3.6 GHz 4-core processors from the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series. With Intel Hyper-Threading enabled, each System x3650 M3 server offers 16 logical processors and can support up to 192 GB of memory. 2

System Center 2012 SP1 Virtual Machine Manager Microsoft SCVMM 2012 SP1 provides private cloud management ease and deep functionality, allowing system administrators to perform common server and storage tasks from a single graphical interface. This paper focuses on the storage management aspects. You can find more information on SCVMM features and capabilities at: Prerequisites This solution covers a Hyper-V environment that is managed by SCVMM 2012 SP1. It is beyond the scope of this paper to explain installing and configuring such an environment. There are links to helpful Microsoft web pages throughout the paper and in the Resources section at the end of the paper. Expected skills and experience to deploy this solution includes: Microsoft Windows Server high-availability, storage, and network connectivity IBM Storwize system knowledge and administration SCVMM administration, including virtual machine (VM) deployment templates Hyper-V administration System requirements and assumptions: SCVMM 2012 SP1 and Storwize firmware 7.1 (or later) are the required version levels. Registry changes on the SCVMM server, covered in the following section. Clustered Hyper-V hosts are assumed, however, most of the steps can also be adapted to stand-alone Hyper-V hosts. SCVMM VM templates must be created if using the SAN-based deployment method, covered in the SAN-based deployment section of paper. Removal of KB which breaks the SCVMM configuration wizard functionality Create storage pools from the Storwize administration console in advance; these are used by SCVMM to allocate storage. They can be created after configuring SCVMM as well, however, the SCVMM server would need to be refreshed before the pools are visible. To refresh the SCVMM server after the Storwize system has been added as a provider, rightclick the Storwize system in the provider list and click Refresh. IBM SDDDSM multipath software on all storage connected systems Add the Hyper-V role to the SCVMM server to facilitate SAN-based VM deployment. SCVMM should be on a physical server to use the SAN-based VM deployment method. Test environment The proof of concept test environment consisted of the following systems and components. IBM System x3650 M3 servers IBM Storwize V7000, firmware level IBM SDDDSM multipath software, version QLogic dual port 8Gb host bus adapters (HBAs), QLE2562, firmware version

Brocade 8Gb FC SAN switch, model IBM 2498-B24, Fabric OS version Microsoft System Center 2012 SP1 Virtual Machine Manager Microsoft SQL Server 2012 for the SCVMM database Microsoft Windows Server 2012 clustered and stand-alone Hyper-V hosts Solution configuration This section includes step-by-step directions and screen captures to set up SCVMM 2012 SP1 with a Storwize V7000 storage system. The steps are the same regardless of the Storwize system used. A summary of the steps to be covered includes: Preparing the SCVMM server Discovering and connecting the storage system Classifying storage levels Allocating storage to Hyper-V host groups After these steps are completed, the solution is ready to start provisioning storage for Hyper-V hosts from the SCVMM console. Preparing the SCVMM server The first step is to make sure that SCVMM can communicate with the storage. Before attempting a connection, the following registry changes and hotfix removal are required on the SCVMM server, or the connection attempt will fail. Use Regedit to make the following registry changes, and this is required only on the SCVMM server: 1. Edit the following registry key: Key name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Storage Management Value 1 Name: DisableHttpsCommonNameCheck Type: REG_DWORD Data: 0x1 2. Manually add the following registry keys, subkeys, and values: Key name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protoc ols\tls 1.1 Class name: <NO CLASS> Last write time: 3/14/ :09 AM Key name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protoc ols\tls 1.1\Client Class name: <NO CLASS> 4

Last write time: 3/14/ :09 AM Value 0 Name: DisabledByDefault Type: REG_DWORD Data: 0 Key name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protoc ols\tls 1.1\Server Class name: <NO CLASS> Last write time: 3/14/ :10 AM Value 0 Name: DisabledByDefault Type: REG_DWORD Data: 0 3. Remove Microsoft patch KB from the SCVMM server before proceeding. This patch prevents the Add Storage Wizard from completing. This is a known Microsoft issue. Discovering and classifying storage The SCVMM server is now ready to proceed with creating a connection to the Storwize system and then classifying the storage pools. Use the following steps to setup the connection. 1. On the left panel of the SCVMM console, click Fabric. 2. From the top Home panel, click Add Resources, and then click Storage Devices to start the Add Storage Devices Wizard. 3. Select SMI-S as the provider type and click Next. Figure 2: Specifying the provider type as SMI-S 4. On the Specify Discovery Scope page, select SMI-S CIMXML as the protocol type. 5

5. Enter the Provider IP address or FQDN of the Storwize system, and leave the default TCP/IP port number. Figure 3: Adding the protocol and storage IP 6. Select the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connection check box 7. Click Browse. The Select a Run As Account dialog box (as shown in the following figure) is displayed. Figure 4: Setting up a Run As account 8. In most cases, a new account will need to be associated. Click Create Run As Account and specify a Storwize admin-level user account and password. Click OK. 9. Verify that the Specify Discovery Scope configuration looks as shown in the following figure, and click Next to continue. Note that if the Microsoft patch mentioned earlier is not removed, the Next button may be grayed out, preventing the wizard from continuing. 6

This can also be viewed in the Jobs panel of SCVMM, where additional details can also be viewed. Figure 12: Status of job running 17. After the job completes, verify the storage is listed as a storage provider in the fabric view with a green status of responding. 10

Figure 13: Verify the storage added to the providers list Allocating storage Before using SCVMM to provision storage for virtual machines, the storage pools must be allocated to SCVMM host groups. Storage pools allocated at the top level of the host group tree are available to all sub-groups below it. To granularly allocate storage to a specific host group, start these steps at that host group object. Perform the following steps to allocate storage. 1. From the SCVMM console, change to the Fabric view and expand the servers tree. 2. Right-click a host group, either the default one or any subgroup that has been created and click Properties. 11

Figure 14: SCVMM view of host groups 3. Click Storage on the left pane and click Allocate Storage Pools. Specific logical unit numbers (LUNs) can also be allocated from this interface, however because the steps are similar only storage pool allocation is covered. Figure 15: Host group properties - storage 4. Select a storage pool and click Add. 12

Figure 16: Selecting a storage pool to assign 5. After all the pools are added, click OK. 6. Verify that the pools are listed in the Storage pools section, and click OK to finish. Figure 17: Verify storage pool assignment SCVMM operations This section covers some automated storage tasks that can be performed from the SCVMM console, including storage provisioning and VM deployment. 13

Provisioning storage with SCVMM The SCVMM server is now configured to provision storage for virtual machines. There are a couple of options, depending on the type of volume needed. The first method is to provision available storage for the Hyper-V cluster, which has an option to convert the volume to a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV). The second method is to go straight to the Shared Volumes section and create a CSV. The former is covered here, however, the steps are nearly identical for both methods. Perform the following steps to provision a volume for Cluster Available Storage. 1. In the Fabric view, navigate to a Hyper-V cluster, right-click, and click Properties. Figure 18: Selecting the properties for a host 2. Select Available Storage in the left pane and click Add. Figure 19: Available storage list for a host 14

3. In the Add Cluster Disk window, click Create Logical Unit. Figure 20: Select the disks to add to Available Storage 4. Enter the settings for the new volume and click OK. Figure 21: Specify the settings for the new disk 5. Confirm the setting of the new volume, make any changes needed, and click OK. 15

Figure 22: Configure the settings on the disk being added 6. Verify that the volume information is correct on the Available Storage summary page. Figure 23: Summary and confirmation of Available Storage addition 7. Click OK to finish. 8. Change to the Jobs view, and verify that the task has been completed successfully. 16

Figure 24: Jobs view of volume being added to Available Storage 9. Go back to the cluster s properties in SCVMM (Available Storage). Verify that the volume is listed as expected. 10. At this point, while on the Available Storage page, the volume can be converted to a CSV by selecting the volume and clicking Convert to CSV. Figure 25: Option to convert the added volume to a CSV 11. The volume disappears from the Available Storage view, and appears in the list of Shared Volumes. 17

Figure 26: Volume appears in list of CSVs 12. Click OK to finish. 13. Check the Jobs view again to confirm that the task has been completed successfully. 14. Go to the Windows Failover Cluster Manager to confirm that the volume is created and converted to a CSV as expected. Figure 27: View of a new volume from Microsoft Failover Cluster Manager Note: To create a CSV directly, follow the same steps in this activity, but select Shared Volumes in step 2 and follow the remaining steps provided by the wizard. 18

SAN copy VM deployment SCVMM 2012 takes advantage of storage vendor snapshot capabilities to deploy virtual machines using the SAN and copy services functions included with the SMI-S provider. The Storwize systems use the IBM FlashCopy snapshot feature which fully supports the SMI-S specification. Because the data transfer occurs at the storage level, it is usually a faster deployment and more importantly, reduces the impact on the network and other services using the LAN. SCVMM templates To use this deployment method, SCVMM templates must be used. The VM templates are stored in the SCVMM library on dedicated SAN-attached volumes. During this type of deployment, SCVMM uses the IBM SMI-S provider to start a FlashCopy snapshot of the SCVMM template volume, then mounts the completed snapshot volume on the intended Hyper-V host server. It is beyond the scope of this paper to cover all of the details around SCVMM template creation and use, which can be challenging initially. Something to keep in mind when planning template volumes and sizing is that the SCVMM library allows only one template per volume. As a result, each template volume only needs to be large enough to host the projected virtual hard disk file size. Because these volumes are smaller, it allows the snapshot copy to complete relatively quickly. You can find detailed information and steps on creation and use of templates at: There are multiple template creation methods, and this link is what was used for the proof of concept testing. At a high level, it involves using an existing (or newly created) VM, generalizing it with Sysprep, copying the prepared virtual hard disk to a dedicated SAN volume mounted in the SCVMM library share, and then creating a SAN copy enabled template with this virtual hard disk. Deployment steps In the following example, a highly available VM is deployed on a clustered Hyper-V host. The steps are nearly identical for deployment on stand-alone Hyper-V hosts. Perform the following steps to deploy a VM with SAN copy deployment. 1. Use the Create Virtual Machine Wizard and click Browse to select a VM template. 19

Figure 28: Selecting the source for the new VM 2. Select a template and click OK. Figure 29: Selecting a VM template from the SCVMM library 3. Click OK and then click Next to confirm the template selection. 4. Enter the VM information, and click Next. 20

Conclusion This paper summarizes the Storwize family products and SVC integrated storage management capabilities and configuration with Microsoft SCVMM. Many of the core storage management tasks can be performed remotely from the SCVMM console, however, the Storwize GUI or command-line interface (CLI) is used for the most comprehensive storage control and information. The reliability and performance of the Storwize family products and SVC with Microsoft workloads has been proven by customer deployments and involvement with partner testing programs such as SQL Server I/O Reliability, SQL Fast Track, and the Exchange Solution Reviewed Program (ESRP). IBM storage systems combined with the wide capabilities of SCVMM provide an efficient and simplified management solution for virtualized data centers.
