3 Introduction This document details the system requirements for the following versions of the Softline VIP Payroll Applications: Essentials Payroll Classic Payroll Premier Payroll Please review this document in detail, paying special attention to the installation scenario specific to your requirements. This document covers the requirements for the following types of installations: Standalone Peer-to-peer networks LAN Networks WAN Networks Please review our Frequently Asked Questions at the end of this document for additional information. Assumptions The system requirements described in this document are based on configurations that have been successfully tested by the Softline VIP Quality Control team during their ongoing testing of the Softline VIP Payroll applications. It is the responsibility of the clients IT department to combine these system requirements with those of other applications that users may have installed on their workstations and servers to ensure sufficient resources are available. 1

4 Standalone Computer Installations Q: What is a standalone computer installation? A: A standalone computer installation is an installation where the Softline VIP Payroll Application is installed on a single PC and will only be accessed from that PC. Standalone Requirements The table below details the minimum system requirements for a standalone computer installation of each of the Softline VIP Payroll Applications. Essentials Classic Premier Hardware Requirements Pentium GHz Dual Core Equivalent 1 GB RAM (2GB for Windows Vista & Windows 7) Available Hard Drive Space 20 GB 20 GB 20 GB CD/DVD Writer USB 2.0 Port Screen Resolution (1024x768) Minimum Software Requirements Windows XP (32 bit) with SP2 or above Windows Vista (32 bit) with SP1 Windows 7 (32 bit) Internet Explorer 7.0 or above Office 2003 or later (for ODBC Reporting).NET 2.0 Framework Note: The payroll applications have been tested on the 64 bit versions of all the supported operating systems, however ODBC and Business Intelligence Manager reporting has NOT been tested on 64 bit platforms. 2

5 Peer-to-peer Network Installations Q: What is a Peer-to-peer Network? A: A peer-to-peer network is a type of network design where all devices connected to the network have roughly equivalent capabilities. This type of networking is common in small Local Area Networks (LANs) which link a number of PC s together to enable the sharing of resources such as files and printers. In the context of the Softline VIP Payroll Applications, the programme and data files would be installed on a server computer and shared to enable users to access the data from other PC s on the LAN. Peer-to-peer Requirements The table below details the minimum system requirements for a Peer-to-peer installation of each of the Softline VIP Payroll Applications. 6 Local Area Network (LAN) Installations Q: What is a Local Area Network (LAN)? A: A local area network (LAN) is a group of computers and associated devices that share a common communications line or wireless link. Typically, connected devices share the resources of a single server within a small geographic area (for example, within an office building). Usually, the server has applications and data storage that are shared by multiple computer users. A local area network may serve as few as two or three users (for example, in a home network) or thousands of users in larger organisations. This network type normally has a Domain Controller that controls user access to the network and associated resources. In the context of Softline VIP Payroll Applications, the programme and data files would be installed on the Server and shared to enable users to access the data from other PC s on the LAN. LAN Requirements The table below details the minimum system requirements for a LAN installation of each of the Softline VIP Payroll Applications. Server Requirements: Essentials Classic Premier Hardware Requirements Pentium GHz Dual Core Equivalent 2 GB RAM Available Hard Drive Space 20 GB 40 GB 60 GB CD/DVD Writer USB 2.0 Port Screen Resolution (1024x768) Minimum 100 Mbps Network Card Software Requirements Windows Server 2003 with SP2 (32 bit or 64 bit) Windows Server 2008 (32 bit or 64 bit).net 2.0 Framework Note: Windows Server 2008 R2 is not supported at this time. Workstation Requirements: All workstations that will be accessing the Softline VIP Payroll application should meet the system requirements for a standalone installation as detailed in the standalone workstation section. 4

7 Wide Area Network (WAN) Installations Q: What is a Wide Area Network (WAN)? A: A WAN is a computer network that spans a relatively large geographical area. A WAN consists of two or more Local Area Networks. A typical example is a company with many regional offices that are linked to a Head Office via a WAN. Computers connected to a widearea network are often connected through public networks, such as the telephone system, leased lines, wireless links or satellite links. In the context of the Softline VIP Payroll Applications, the programme and data files would be installed on a Server in a central location and shared to enable users to access the data from other PC s on the LAN or WAN. WAN Connections will require additional software such as Microsoft Terminal Services or Citrix for efficient communication between the clients and the server. WAN Requirements The table below details the minimum system requirements for a WAN installation of each of the Softline VIP Payroll Applications. Server Requirements: Essentials Classic Premier Hardware Requirements Pentium GHz Dual Core Equivalent 2 GB RAM Available Hard Drive Space 20 GB 40 GB 60 GB CD/DVD Writer USB 2.0 Port Screen Resolution (1024x768) Minimum 100 Mbps Network Card Software Requirements Windows Server 2003 with SP2 (32 bit and 64 bit) Windows Server 2008 (32 bit and 64 bit) Terminal Services Role (as required) Citrix (as required).net 2.0 Framework Note: Windows Server 2008 R2 is not supported at this time. It is the responsibility of your network administrator to ensure the server has sufficient capacity to service the total number of remote users that may access the server via Terminal Services or Citrix. Additional requirements for Terminal Services or Citrix should be determined by your network administrator. Workstation Requirements: All workstations that will be accessing the Softline VIP Payroll application should meet the system requirements for a standalone installation as detailed in the standalone workstation section. 5

8 Frequently Asked Questions Q: Does the Softline VIP Payroll Applications run successfully on Novel Netware solutions? The Softline VIP Payroll Applications are only tested on Microsoft Windows based networks. Q: What type of database does the Softline VIP Payroll Application use? Softline VIP Payroll data is stored in proprietary AcuCorp COBOL ISAM data files. This data is encrypted using proprietary encryption algorithms housed in the AcuCorp run time libraries. Data is thus stored in a fully encrypted, secure and reliable sub-system. Q: What backup procedures are required? It is recommended that a backup of the entire Softline VIP Payroll directory be made daily with an archive backup at least once a month after the payroll has been finalised for the month. This is vital to ensure that historical backups can be easily restored without having to first install the payroll system files that coincide with the software version of the payroll in use at the time the backup was made. These backups will range from 300 MB to 1GB depending on the number of employee records. In busier payroll departments, regular daily backups are highly recommended to reduce workload in the event of a system failure. Q: What are the printing requirements? The Softline VIP Payroll Application use of Windows printing. Printing to dot matrix printers is also supported. If Terminal Services is going to be used, ensure that all necessary printers are installed on the server for access by users. Q: What is ODBC? ODBC (Open Data Base Connectivity) is a very powerful tool that provides VIP Payroll users with the ability to extract data from the Softline VIP Payroll Application for report generation in Microsoft Excel, Word or similar ODBC capable applications. All versions of Softline VIP Payroll Applications ship with the required ODBC drivers and configuration tools. In order to make use of VIP Business Intelligence Manager (BIM) and ODBC, Microsoft Office is required. The components that must be installed include MS Excel (with MS Query), MS Access and MS Word. Microsoft Office 2003 or above recommended. Q: Are Windows 95, 98, Windows Millennium, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2000 supported? The Softline VIP Payroll Application is not supported on the above operating systems. Microsoft support for these operating systems has also been discontinued.
