JUSTIFICATION FO_RM USC Columbia, Lancaster, Salkehatchie, Sumter & Union campuses JUS INSTRUCTIONS: Please attach a statement explaining the justification for the proposed program or course action. This form is available online at www.sc.edutprovost/acadprog. Date: March 21, 2014 Campus: --=C-=o.:..:Iu=m=-b=-=i=a College/School: College of Nursing Department (if applicable): -----=N:...:..:/=A=------------------------ Degree Program (if applicable): Master of Nursing-Clinical Nursing 0 Undergraduate ~ Graduate A College of Nursing Task Force was charged with finding an alternative to the GRE for the DNP (Doctor of Nurse Practice) and MSN (MS Nursing) graduate programs. Their findings showed a nursing graduate student's success depends on GPA, letters of recommendation, and personal goal statement that demonstrates clarity of ideas, writing skills, and congruence with program outcomes. The alternative admission criteria system was approved by the College of Nursing Graduate Council and subsequently submitted to the USC Graduate Council. The GRE score was removed from the admissions criteria for the Doctor of Nurse Practice (DNP) program upon approval by The USC Graduate Council in Spring 2013. Below is the justification for the request for GRE scores to be removed from the admissions criteria for the Master of Science (MSN) program in Clinical Nursing and instead use alternative criteria in evaluating admissions applications. Grade Point Average Criteria (SO points max)-the GPA will be evaluated based on undergraduate coursework. See attached. Goal Statement (30 points max)-applicants address their interest and potential in the advanced practice nursing role, applying leadership at the Master's level, and applying evidence-based research at the Master's level in the clinical setting. See attached. Two Letter of Recommendation (20 points, 10 max points per letter)-recommenders evaluate the applicant by selecting the ranking that corresponds to the applicant as outlined.
