We merge this academic knowledge with the managerial experience and practice of the most creative, innovative and successful Italian companies. Our prominent role in the development of our economic institutions is reinforced by new partnerships that are being established on the basis of shared values and common goals. Among these, a shift of focus to the global dimension of business permeates our management education efforts. Our University: the First in the Western World The University of Bologna was established in 1088, as the first University in the Western World. Its history is one of great thinkers in science and the humanities, making it an indispensable point of reference in the panorama of European culture. The institution that we today call the University began to take shape in Bologna when masters of Grammar, Rhetoric and Logic began to devote themselves to the law. Since then, the University of Bologna has been one of the most relevant centers for the growth of culture and science. On 18 September 1988 in Bologna s main square (Piazza Maggiore), the Rectors of 430 universities signed the Magna Charta Universitatum Europaeum. The Magna Charta, which has since been signed by another 400 Rectors, affirmed the autonomy of the University, the essential link between teaching and research activities that transcends the limits imposed by any geographical or political border. The signing took place as part of the ninth centennial of the University of Bologna, which was formally recognised as the Alma Mater of all universities. On 19 June 1999 in the Aula Magna of the University of Bologna, 29 European Ministers of Higher Education signed the so-called Declaration of Bologna, which defines the most relevant objectives for the creation of a European Area of higher education and the promotion of this system in the world. More than 100,000 students are enrolled at the University of Bologna, making it one of the largest in Italy. The University of Bologna has adopted a Multicampus structure in order to increase the diffusion of education and research. Between Bologna, Forlì, Cesena, Rimini, Ravenna, and Buenos Aires there are over half a million square metres of floorspace for teaching and extra-curricular activities. The 23 Faculties offer 143 undergraduate degrees, 98 Lauree Magistrali (graduate degrees), and 51 Doctoral Programs. In order to improve career opportunities for future graduates, the University has signed over 3,500 agreements with businesses and public organisations. According to a recent report by the National Committee for University Evaluation, the University of Bologna is today the most International Italian university. 8 9
