HEALTHCARE MBA STRATEGIC PLAN 2015-2020 A Strategy of Dreaming, Learning, Doing and Becoming

TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION OUR PROGRAM HISTORY AND STRUCTURE BEYOND POSSIBLE 2020: THE UNIVERSITY STRATEGIC PLAN A FOCUS ON HEALTHCARE MISSION, VISION, AND VALUES STRATEGIC COMMITMENTS CONCLUSION: A Strategy of Dreaming, Learning, Doing and Becoming

INTRODUCTION As Florida International University implements its Beyond Possible 2020 strategic plan, the Healthcare MBA will align its own strategic initiatives through its mission, vision, and values. Together with our advisory board, our faculty, staff and student feedback, we will focus on delivering a curriculum based on competencies established by the American College of Healthcare Executives with the key goal of preparing every graduate for the needs of the marketplace. Underlying our curriculum are the themes of service to the community, industry management proficiency, professional ethics, and globalization. Our commitment to globalization is especially meaningful as we consider the many challenges of developed and developing nations alike in designing cost effective healthcare infrastructures and managing the delivery of healthcare to all citizens. We aim to see our own system, its strengths and weaknesses, through the eyes of the world. The University and the College of Business (COB) are planning for significant growth, and we must ensure that the Healthcare MBA, as an important member in these communities, achieves growth through a framework of excellence in our programs, faculty, and staff. We will achieve excellence in our program through our firm commitment to multicultural and working students and the sound preparation of our students to meet market demands. We will achieve excellence in our curriculum through a strong emphasis on achieving course competencies at each level of instruction. We will achieve excellence in our relationship to the community by providing our graduates with professional knowledge and with conceptual, analytical, technical, and ethical skills to manage healthcare systems collaboratively with competency, sound decisionmaking, and integrity. Our goal is to brand our program as one of the premiere graduate healthcare programs in the country. OUR PROGRAM HISTORY AND STRUCTURE The Professional Masters of Business Administration with a health management track (referred to as Healthcare MBA or HCMBA) was approved in 2009 with the first cohort of students enrolled in fall 2010. Prior to the HCMBA degree, the University offered a Masters in Health Services Administration (MHSA) degree within the College of Public Health and Social Work. In 2009, the MHSA program no longer accepted new students and the degree was phased out in 2010. The HCMBA degree meets the needs of its targeted student population - a diverse group of working professionals interested in obtaining a graduate degree in health management. The HCMBA is an industryspecific Professional MBA (PMBA) degree offered by the Chapman Graduate School of Business within FIU s College of Business Administration. As such, the Program s competencies/learning objectives have been recently updated in accordance with rigorous CAHME standards and those of the American College of Healthcare Executives. The competencies are also consistent with those of the College of Business Administration s other PMBA programs as approved by AACSB - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

The HCMBA is an 18-month, 42-credit hour graduate program designed for working professionals, delivered in two different formats: one is a face to face format and the other is a fully online program. In the face to face program, students begin and end their program together in cohorts offered at a FIU campus, academic center, site or approved off-campus location. Additionally, students attend a 120 residency/orientation program. Upon graduating, students receive a Masters of Business Administration degree with specialization in health management. The program s strength and market appeal is that students acquire the business knowledge and skills that a MBA degree provides with added emphasis on the practical applications of the concepts and theories within healthcare settings. The online program offers the identical academic program in distinct fully online cohorts. BEYOND POSSIBLE 2020: THE UNIVERSITY STRATEGIC PLAN A FOCUS ON HEALTHCARE The HCMBA mission, vision, and values statements are part of an overarching university strategic plan announced in 2015, Beyond Possible 2020. This strategic plan captures the true character of our learning community when it states: We are educating tomorrow s workforce. Our students, alumni, faculty and staff are contributing to the economic and social well-being of our state. Their contributions have local and global reach. The university strategic plan also singles out the importance of healthcare in the curriculum when it states: The quality, cost and availability of health care remain a major challenge for most people living in the United States. Gaps in access to health care lead to health care disparities, which lead to opportunity gaps for many who reside in our community. Miami is at the epicenter of some of the nation s most critical health issues and changing health economy. Our community is burdened by chronic illness, maternal and child health issues, and established and emerging infectious diseases. FIU s health infrastructure has been in evolution since the late 1990s. We are uniquely positioned to provide solutions while training our community s future health care providers. We are also collaborating with clinical and payer affiliates to address these challenges with innovation and scholarship. FIU s academic health collaborative faculty take a cross disciplinary approach to health. http://stratplan.fiu.edu/docs/strategic%20plan.pdf

MISSION, VISION, AND VALUES In the spirit of the strategic plan initiatives of Beyond Possible 2020, the HCMBA takes pride in enunciating its own mission, vision, and values. MISSION: The mission of the Healthcare MBA Program at Florida International University is to improve the delivery of health services through the education of healthcare managers, service to the community and the profession, and research. The Program provides educational opportunity with a special commitment to multicultural and working students. The educational mission is to provide early to mid-level career path students with professional knowledge and with conceptual, analytical, technical, and ethical skills to manage healthcare systems collaboratively with competency, sound decision-making, and integrity. As part of our mission to better serve the community, the Program aims to prepare our students for the needs of the marketplace through the integration of theory and practice. VISION: The vision of the Healthcare MBA Program is to become South Florida s leading healthcare management program known locally, nationally, and internationally for providing quality education, service to community, and research. To facilitate this vision the Program is designed to be a catalyst for change, leadership, and innovation. The solution to current healthcare issues likewise requires strategic alliances with stakeholders in government, policy makers, public and private healthcare institutions, and the communities served by our graduates. Our vision embraces integrity, transparency, and trust. VALUES: Our values reflect and facilitate the implementation of our mission and include a commitment to ethics, transparency, community values, lifelong learning, and integration of theory and practice. Specifically, the Program embraces the following values: Responsibility as committed global citizens advancing best practices in healthcare Respect for all individuals Commitment to preparing our graduates for meaningful service and careers in the healthcare marketplace Commitment to the lifelong learning needs of our students after graduation by nurturing alumni relationships Commitment to healthcare institutions through meaningful partnerships to facilitate the integration of learning and practice in the development of our program Our values are designed to serve our students, the community and the internal growth of our faculty and institution. STRATEGIC COMMITMENTS It is not enough to articulate strategic initiatives. We must translate our strategic goals into actionable initiatives as follows:

CONCLUSION: A Strategy of Dreaming, Learning, Doing and Becoming The HCMBA Strategic Plan is the Program s roadmap to turn ideas into action and action into impact on student learning and program success. As we continue with implementation, we will call upon our faculty, students, Advisory Council, alumni, learning partners and staff to work together to achieve these goals and create new vision once these goals have been achieved. Our hope is to become one of the premiere healthcare MBA programs in the country. We aspire to achieve a true partnership between theory and practice in the delivery of our curriculum. We believe that if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. The HCMBA Program is our instrument to lead our students to excellence and success through a strategy of dreaming, learning, doing and becoming.
