WHAT BIBLICAL PASTORAL WORK IS ABOUT By definition, a Biblical pastoral counsellor is one who counsels according to a Christian worldview. He/she will work within a framework that sees all of the realities, challenges and relationships of life in a perspective that is Biblically sound and consistent, and therefore honours God. Therefore, any model or method of counselling that is authentically Biblical, will be framed, designed, and executed in happy submission to the Biblical demand that our lives be lived out entirely for the glory of God. The properly trained Biblical pastoral counsellor should be competent with the following topics, challenges and problem areas: www.filadelfiainstitute.org info@filadelfiaopleiding.org.za Spiritual growth. Relationship with the Father. Relationship with the Son. Relationship with the Spirit. Depression. Inter- personal relationships. Intra- personal relationships. Career guidance. Illness. Anxiety. Fear. Abortions. Anger. Hurt. Emotional abuse. Sexual abuse. Trauma. Pornography. Christ-Centred Biblical Counselling is a grace-based and gospel-centred foundation for all of life, all ministry, and all Biblical counselling. Grief. Stress. Worry. Bitterness. Self- management. Self- development. Retirement. Loneliness. Forgiveness. Self- image. Shame. Guilt. Manipulation. True love. Insecurity. Rejection. And more. Romans 15:4 Now those things which were put down in writing before our time were for our learning, so that through quiet waiting and through the comfort of the holy Writings we might have hope. (BBE)
BACKGROUND Filadelfia started off in 1994 as a support group for ladies suffering from depression and anxiety. The support theme, as opposed to a profit motive has undergirded the further development of Filadelfia into an interdenominational ministry. During the first few years, matters evolved into a number of other operations such as training, additional support groups and private pastoral practises. As a direct consequence of the cumulative personal, intrapersonal and social challenges, stress and trauma in the country, the need was identified train lay pastoral counsellors for service in congregations, organizations as and the community. In 1997, the first 9 students completed a one- year certificate in Biblical Counselling. The Bureau for Continuous Education of Technikon Free State accredited this certificate. Interest in the course quickly grew and a two- year diploma in Biblical Counselling was offered from 2000. Discussions with the Faculty of Theology, North- West University (Potchefstroom Campus) began in 2003. The university evaluated our material and found it to be of a degree standard. In January 2005, a cooperative agreement was signed, which resulted in Filadelfia co- presenting a B.Th. with the university. A further need was identified to equip persons up to honours level in the specialist direction of Biblical Pastoral Counselling in addition to the B.Th. outcome. From 2006 to 2010 Filadelfia presented the university s 1st, 2nd and 3rd year Biblical studies together with Filadelfia s own newly developed material. Unfortunately, the cooperative agreement could not continue in terms of the new Higher Education Act. At this point, Filadelfia and the Florida Department of Education registered Miami International Seminary (MINTS) took hands. MINTS accredited (still does) Filadelfia and we became part of a global Theology community of ±15000 students in 50 countries through 225 study centres. With the switch to MINTS, Filadelfia introduced an updated 1 st, 2 nd, 3rd & 4th year curriculum whereby all modules presented were now the full intellectual property of Filadelfia. At the end of 2011, the head office was relocated from Bloemfontein to Paarl. A satellite office continues in Bloemfontein. www.filadelfiainstitute.org info@filadelfdelfiaopleiding.org.za
