Milan Living and studying in Milan offers a broad exposure to an international business community and opens up a range of opportunities thanks to an extensive entrepreneurial network and the wide variety of sectors present in the region. Milan is a dynamic and cultural city at the forefront of modern Italy, where many important events, shows and exhibitions take place.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT Politecnico di Milano has a sound tradition for international cooperation in the areas of teaching and research. This feature is reflected in the highly international environment of the Ph.D. programme offered through the Department. Doctoral studies take place in an internationally active research environment, giving the programme an intrinsic international dimension. The Ph.D. programme includes a compulsory period of study abroad of at least one semester. This time spent abroad allows students to develop an international network of professional contacts that will facilitate their subsequent career path and opens up further opportunities for high quality training thanks to Ph.D. courses, schools and workshops organised by the hosting institutions. In addition, Double Degree agreements are in place at Ph.D. level: EDIM (European Doctorate in Industrial Management) is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Programme run by KTH (Sweden), POLIMI (Italy) and UPM (Spain), funded by the European Commission (EACEA); Double Degree Programme with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Chile), Escuela de Ingeniería Industrial, Doctorado en Ingeniería Industrial. The programme allows participants to work in a stimulating international context that will help them develop methodological skills and specialised expertise in research and innovation, while their companies benefit from the methodology of academic research at an international level to an innovative project that is of practical use to the company. The Executive Ph.D. is a part-time programme, specifically designed to complement and be compatible with each participant s professional life, and is composed of: an initial two-year course of study, during which participants receive an education geared towards applied research and innovation; a second two-year programme, during which participants develop a Ph.D. thesis on a topic that is highly relevant to their companies, supervised by members of the doctoral faculty. The four-year programme ends with a formal assessment by the Academic Board and with a public defence of the thesis. The Commission is made up of three to five members.

EDIM PROGRAMME Politecnico di Milano runs the European Doctorate in Industrial Management (EDIM), a four-year Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Programme that awards a double Ph.D. title, in partnership with the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM). The programme involves a common EDIM curriculum, joint supervision, quarterly EDIM workshops, planned candidate mobility, a double doctoral degree, and a joint scientific committee of professors from the partner institutes. A unique feature of this programme is that it combines an international structure with an explicit focus on non-technical managerial issues, paying close attention to the context of technology, engineering and industry. For further information, www.edim-phd.eu DIG helps its PhD students go confidently in the directions of their dreams. As an international PhD student, I am surrounded by a group of devoted people showing me that the only way to achieve the next level is to work with dedication, support, and love.
