INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT Politecnico di Milano has a sound tradition for international cooperation in the areas of teaching and research. This feature is reflected in the highly international environment of the Ph.D. programme offered through the Department. Doctoral studies take place in an internationally active research environment, giving the programme an intrinsic international dimension. The Ph.D. programme includes a compulsory period of study abroad of at least one semester. This time spent abroad allows students to develop an international network of professional contacts that will facilitate their subsequent career path and opens up further opportunities for high quality training thanks to Ph.D. courses, schools and workshops organised by the hosting institutions. In addition, Double Degree agreements are in place at Ph.D. level: EDIM (European Doctorate in Industrial Management) is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Programme run by KTH (Sweden), POLIMI (Italy) and UPM (Spain), funded by the European Commission (EACEA); Double Degree Programme with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Chile), Escuela de Ingeniería Industrial, Doctorado en Ingeniería Industrial. A series of scientific cooperation agreements with other renowned international academic institutions have, in the recent past, allowed Ph.D. students to spend extended periods of study abroad. AIMS AND SCOPE The Doctoral programme in Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering aims to develop professionals who are able to carry out high-profile research in these fields at universities and international research institutions, manufacturing and service companies, regulatory authorities and other public bodies. The programme helps students develop a sound methodological background and multidisciplinary knowledge through courses designed to provide a range of perspectives, theories and approaches, a broad cultural foundation and the ability to study problems in an innovative manner, combining various analytical research techniques. The commitment of the Department to this field of research, complemented by scientific cooperation, produces an ideal environment to acquire leadingedge knowledge and to cultivate their own research interests in a broad spectrum of research subjects. Ph.D. candidates are usually involved in multidisciplinary research that addresses significant emerging issues and challenges. Elective courses and training activities The study plan is customised according to each student s specific research interests. The aim is to expand students scientific knowledge of specific topics and introduce them to the international scientific community by attending Ph.D. schools or workshops and presenting their research works at international conferences. Thesis The preparation of a Ph.D. thesis is the qualifying activity of the Ph.D. programme. It allows students to develop leading-edge research competencies and to produce an original scientific contribution on a topic of significance for scientific debate and of interest for the business world. The research will be supervised by members of the doctoral faculty, who will provide guidance tothe candidate in setting out and arranging the everyday activities involved in the thesis development. The thesis can be edited in the form of a monograph or a collection of papers. Scholarships Each year we award scholarships and give extra financial support for research periods abroad. EXECUTIVE Ph.D. PROGRAMME The Executive Ph.D. in Management Engineering, Economics and Industrial Engineering plots a path of research and advanced education for managers and professionals who will take up positions of responsibility involving research and innovation processes at companies and public administrations. The programme allows participants to work in a stimulating international context that will help them develop methodological skills and specialised expertise in research and innovation, while their companies benefit from the methodology of academic research at an international level to an innovative project that is of practical use to the company. The Executive Ph.D. is a part-time programme, specifically designed to complement and be compatible with each participant s professional life, and is composed of: an initial two-year course of study, during which participants receive an education geared towards applied research and innovation; a second two-year programme, during which participants develop a Ph.D. thesis on a topic that is highly relevant to their companies, supervised by members of the doctoral faculty. The four-year programme ends with a formal assessment by the Academic Board and with a public defence of the thesis. The Commission is made up of three to five members.
EDIM PROGRAMME Politecnico di Milano runs the European Doctorate in Industrial Management (EDIM), a four-year Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Programme that awards a double Ph.D. title, in partnership with the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM). The programme involves a common EDIM curriculum, joint supervision, quarterly EDIM workshops, planned candidate mobility, a double doctoral degree, and a joint scientific committee of professors from the partner institutes. A unique feature of this programme is that it combines an international structure with an explicit focus on non-technical managerial issues, paying close attention to the context of technology, engineering and industry.
