Master Program In Engineering The environmental engineering master program is a multidisciplinary curriculum aimed at engineering and science graduates who would like to pursue graduate studies to enhance their knowledge in environmental subjects and enable them to seek engineering solutions to environmental problems generated by industrial growth with sustainable natural resources. Currently, there is a increased demand for graduates who are competent in environmental subjects in all sectors of industry including governmental agencies. The environmental engineering master program will equip the graduate students with a firm science related to the environment and engineering design and problem solving skills required to address contemporary environmental issues in a time where natural resources are heavily utilized. The environmental engineering master program curriculum is designed to benefit both practicing engineers and those contemplating pursuing a research oriented career. WHY PURSUE A MASTERS DEGREE IN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING? engineers develop sustainable solutions to environmental problems. engineers protect the environment, improve water quality, and are essential in planning, designing and constructing water and wastewater treatment plants, solid waste disposal, site remediation approaches and emission control measures. In addition, new environmental challenges provide new opportunities for environmental engineers to solve global problems. Successful response to the impacts of global climate change, fast-moving introduction of sustainable development practices in industry, and greener operations will require the skills of environmental engineers. Major corporations, oil and gas, petrochemicals, healthcare, government agencies, private consulting and construction firms, and universities are just some of the organizations that employ environmental engineers. More environmental engineers will be needed to comply with environmental regulations, to develop methods of solving existing pressing industrial problems, and preventing future environmental difficulties. A shift in emphasis towards preventing problems rather than controlling those that already exist, as well as increasing public health concerns, will also spur demand for environmental engineers. WHY STUDY ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AT QATAR UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING? The College of Engineering at Qatar University has been providing quality education for over 30 years. Its graduates are leaders in industry, government and private companies throughout Qatar and the region. The College of Engineering offers a unique combination of engineering skills and provides a strong and dynamic learning environment with close links between research and teaching. The college enjoys exceptional relationship with the industry in Qatar
that provide a real-world-focus to the proposed program. The College of Engineering conducts research funded by QNRF s NPRP program and is recognized for its international excellence and collaborations. Furthermore, by providing continuing education prospects for working professionals and graduates from different disciplines, the program would foster a culture of higher education that offers opportunities to encourage synergies across disciplines and collaboration among students, researchers, industries, government and the community at large. WHO CAN JOIN THE PROGRAM? The program is designed for engineering and suitably qualified science graduates who are seeking a formal qualification that will enhance their personal development and career prospects. Other relevant scientific disciplines will be considered as deemed appropriate for admission into the master program. This may include chemistry, physics and biology. Admission of non-engineering students will be reviewed for their mathematical and computing background through their transcripts. Suitably qualified working professionals who wish to continue their education in the field will also be considered. WHAT JOB OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE IN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING? engineering training offer the graduates opportunities to work in any aspect of environmental protection. The major areas include air pollution control, industrial hygiene, hazardous waste management, toxic materials control, water supply, wastewater management, storm water management, solid waste disposal, public health, and land management. Within each of these major categories are many sub-specialties. The degree will enhance prospects for potential employment in Governmental bodies (Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Works), national and international industries located in and outside Qatar (examples: the hydrocarbon (gas and petrochemicals) industry (QAPCO, QVC, QChem, Qatar Gas, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips), and service and utility providers (KAHRAMAA, QEWC), Barwa, Diar, Ashgal, Hamad Medical Hospital among others. Also, potential employment opportunities exist in consultancies as well as in research institutions. WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM COVER? The curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of environmental issues, including: A strong foundation of enabling sciences like chemistry and microbiology. This will enable students to understand the nature of environmental issues and problems, apply appropriate standard measurement techniques to quantify the extent of such environmental problems in the air, water or soil, and apply chemical/biological solutions as appropriate. Roles played by biological organisms in ecological processes, as well as their contributions to environmental technology in practice. Key value of the water medium and the chemical movements and transformations that occur as an academic vehicle for illustrating environmental processes and their control and management.
WHAT ARE THE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS? (i) Candidates must have a Bachelor degree in an Engineering discipline or in Applied Sciences with GPA greater than or equal to 2.8 out of 4.0 scale (In case, applicant's transcript shows percentage or GPAs on a scale other than 4.00 would be translated accordingly). (ii) English language proficiency demonstrated by a minimum score of TOEFL of 520 or equivalent. The college of engineering will assess and determine whether the prerequisite courses completed in the undergraduate degree by a candidate are equivalent to those required for this program. IS PART-TIME STUDY AVAILABLE? The program can be pursued on a full- or part-time basis. Evening and late afternoon classes accommodate working professionals. WHAT IS THE EXPECTED STUDY PLAN? The program is flexible in nature with a choice in selecting technical electives to suit various student backgrounds and preferences. Students have to complete the equivalent of 35 credits, spread into three main components: required (core) courses, technical elective courses, and an option of thesis or a Master s project route. In essence the program can either be researchoriented (thesis option) or non-research oriented (project option).
