Good design practice Good installation practice according to installation guidelines from PI web site www.profibus.com and from www.verwertraining.com Good design and layout will have facilities to enable health checking and fault diagnosis/location. Health checking enables you to detect any noncritical errors that you would otherwise not be aware of. Enable and report device diagnostics so that critical errors can be rapidly located and fixed and noncritical errors can be scheduled for maintenance. Development of a culture of good-practice in engineering and maintenance staff. Page 3 Good design practice Stick to the rules Layout and installation guidelines freely available. Make sure that design staff know the problems and pitfalls of installation and maintenance - Installer training is appropriate for design staff. Include features to facilitate health checking and fault finding Without having to shut the network down. Ensure drawings and documentation are accurate and appropriate for ongoing maintenance. Page 4
Good Design Practice It is well known that communication errors become more critical at higher bit rates. A good piece of advice when designing a network is thus to: Design for the highest possible bit rate. Operate at the lowest possible bit rate. In this way, we maximise the tolerance margin for communication faults which may occur during the life of the plant. Page 5 Piggy Back Sockets The test tools must be able to be attached to each segment in order to see the waveforms. Thus every segment should be fitted with a piggy back socket for attachment of test tools. However, don t connect the test tool to the piggy back via a cable. This creates a stub line, which will itself generate reflections Page 6
Training and Support The one-day certified PROFIBUS installer course is an essential qualification not only for installers, but also for system designers. Many of the common pitfalls are made at the design stage. A one-day System Design course is also available as an add-on to the installer course. This course deals with the appropriate and most cost effective application of PROFIBUS/PROFINET technology. Covers detailed design of factory automation and process control systems including wireless and AS-i technology. Page 7 The case for permanent monitoring Health checking is an important part of the commissioning and maintenance strategy for your plant. The health check will help to find non-critical and intermittent faults that are not obvious. Health checking takes time and can only show degradation at the time of the health check. How much better to integrate the health checking tools into the network? To give permanent monitoring of system health. Automatically report failures. Give pre-warning of impending failures and performance degradation. Page 8
Permanent monitoring tools A number of new tools have appeared on the market which are designed to be permanently connected to the network to provide 24/7 network monitoring. Softing INspektor DP network monitor (one segment) Pepperl+Fuchs ADM PA segment monitor (up to four segments) Procentec COMbricks DP network monitor (up to four networks, 20 segments) Page 9 COMbricks COMbricks is a modular repeater and gateway system from Procentec with built-in ProfiTrace functionality accessible over Ethernet. COMbricks provides: Networking, PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Ethernet, copper and fibre-optic. Monitoring ProfiTrace OE built-in and accessible over Ethernet (web based). Control Remote IO capability allowing low cost control and plant monitoring over the network. Page 10
