Measurement Products FieldKey Wireless Adapter Unlock the process and maintenance information stranded in your field instruments
ABB Wireless Instrumentation FieldKey, the quick and easy to fit wireless solution to monitor process and maintenance information from your field instruments. Wired to wireless Wireless remote access to any 4 to 20 ma HART instrument The ABB FieldKey wireless adapter is designed to add wireless remote access to any 4-20 ma HART instrument using the WirelessHART industry standard. Adding wireless connectivity to HART instruments enables remote asset management (with applications such as Asset Vision), and monitoring of other process variables that the instrument can offer. FieldKey makes available all the information held within the connected instrument. Use the FieldKey for wireless monitoring of process values and maintenance information. The FieldKey wireless adapter is the smallest of its kind in the market today. With just two wires to connect, installation is quick and easy and can often be achieved in less than 3 minutes. Designed to be quick and easy to install and use: - Uses energy harvesting so no battery is required - Small size make it quick and easy to fi t - Just to wires to connect simplifi es installation - Unique rotating antenna design to obtain the best signal strength - Can be used with any HART 4-20 ma instrument from any supplier - Can access stranded information within installed instruments - Provides wireless remote access to help monitor processes and optimize asset performance - Used as a repeater to extend the wireless network range - Set up by Electronic Device Descriptor (EDD) and Device Type Manager (DTM) 2 Wireless Measurement
The time is now ABB WirelessHART WirelessHART mesh network FieldKey utilizes the WirelessHART network to pass data back to the host system. FieldKey is compliant with the WirelessHART standard therefore it can be used within any WirelessHART network. A WirelessHART network must have the following components: - Host system (for example, Asset Vision or System 800xA) - WirelessHART Gateway - WirelessHART devices (for example, FieldKey) Stand alone Asset Management application System 800xA High speed bus Gateway WirelessHART MESH network Host system level (Connect via MODBUS TPC or OPC for example) Process variable monitoring and asset management WirelessHART Gateway (One per mesh network) Builds Mesh network and handles security WirelessHART mesh network Comprises: - Process instruments - Wireless adapters - Network repeaters Maximum range between devices 250 m May contain over 100 instruments ABB FieldKey Wireless Adapter Instruments commissioned using HART hand-held configurator Wireless Measurement 3
Real challenges Your best solution The ABB FieldKey wireless adapter handles the real problems you may have on site. CHALLENGE 1: NO REMOTE ACCESS TO STRANDED INFORMATION FOR MONITORING AND CONTROL The majority (90%) of the HART 4-20 ma instruments currently installed have no remote access to a control or monitoring system. The result is that valuable asset management and process information is left stranded in the field, including valve condition (for example, position feedback), process data from a multi-variable device (for example, flow rates, density or temperature data), etc. Solution: FieldKey is the key to unlock the stranded information It is designed to add remote wireless access to any HART 4-20 ma instrument irrespective of the vendor. It can provide access to all the process and asset management information available from the instrument and is quick and easy to install. CHALLENGE 2: PROCESS MONITORING OF REMOTE PROCESS AREAS As new regulations require additional process monitoring or plant expansion requires remote monitoring, long cable runs can be expensive to install (tank level monitoring for example). Solution: Make best use of local power and install traditional 4-20 ma HART instruments with FieldKey wireless adapters. There is no need to install expensive cables back to the control room, saving both time and money. CHALLENGE 3: HOW TO ENSURE DATA RELIABILITY AND SECURITY Personal experience with WiFi based networks raises concerns about security and reliability of data communication. Solution: Use the WirelessHART international standard IEC with built-in security and reliability features. - Data encryption 128 bit encryption as used in banking environments - Different encryption keys used at each hop along the network - Authentication data is checked to see if it has been altered on route - New devices must be authenticated before they can send data - Frequency channels are changed at each hop along the network (makes it difficult to find the data) 4 Wireless Measurement
Lowest installation, maintenance and engineering costs FieldKey can upgrade any 4-20mA HART instrument to wireless FieldKey and WirelessHART save your costs in the following aspects: Green energy no battery required. FieldKey is powered from the 4-20 ma loop so it has no internal battery to install or maintain. Other adapters have internal batteries that add to the initial cost and also make the housing much larger. With no battery to manage FieldKey can offer faster update rates than battery powered adapters. Small size and removable antenna lower installation cost. Large adapters often require remote mounting because they simply will not fit into the space available at the instrument. FieldKey is the smallest WirelessHART adapter on the market and its antenna can be temporarily removed, making it the easiest to install in cramped conditions, reducing the installation cost. Automatic power requirement adjustment lower installation cost and error risk. There is a voltage drop across any wireless adapter that obtains its power from a 4-20 ma loop. If the field instrument is at the end of a long cable run, the voltage available may be insufficient to power both the instrument and the adapter you may need to carry out some load calculations. FieldKey adjusts the voltage drop automatically without the need for load calculations, simplifying installation and reducing the chance for errors. No special expensive commissioning equipment required The FieldKey is commissioned with the use of a standard HART confi gurator. You only need to install the DD or DTM for the FieldKey into your existing HART commissioning tool. Up to 10-fold total cost saving compared to a wired installation Early indications are that a WirelessHART installation can provide up to a 10-fold cost saving when compared to a wired equivalent. Reduced training, engineering, planning and procurement costs WirelessHART devices, such as FieldKey, uses standard HART integration files (DD/DTM) with the same tools you may use on site today. The mesh network automatically builds as new devices are joined reducing engineering effort. Wireless Measurement 5
FieldKey applications Remote wireless connectivity The FieldKey wireless adapter adds remote wireless connectivity to any 4-20 ma HART instrument to monitor process values, maintenance conditions or for fault drill down. It is intended for use either with PC in which asset management software (for example Asset Vision) is installed, or with Control Systems such as ABB System 800xA that could integrate a WirelessHART network. Examples of control systems that could integrate a WirelessHART network other than ABB System 800xA: - DeltaV - SIMATIC - RSView - TDC CENTUM Simple mesh showing ABB instruments and the FieldKey With the Gateway to a WirelessHART network, adding Field- Key to any HART Instrument could achieve your instrument management and process monitoring goals in a simple and convenient way: - Wireless steps to increase process visibility - Add wireless to monitor instrument health - Easily monitor both Process Value and Asset information Wireless temperature PC/Control System WirelessHART Gateway Wireless valve monitor Wireless fl ow Wireless multivariable Hand-held Terminal Wireless Flow Wireless pressure 6 Wireless Measurement
Frequently asked questions Know more about FieldKey and WirelessHART Why use FieldKey Starter Kit? It is a kit containing a preconfigured gateway and five preset FieldKey adapters for process or condition monitoring - works out of the box with no additional configuration required. - Monitor all process data held in field instruments; particularly valuable for multivariable devices such as Coriolis flow - Monitor valve condition reported by a HART positioner - Monitor instrument diagnostic messages - Carry out remote instrument configuration - Install point-by-point, often without the need for a plant shut-down Is WirelessHART like WiFi? No. Although WirelessHART uses the same frequency range, it has several features built-in to provide a more reliable and secure network. What applications can WirelessHART be used in? Designed for process monitoring & control and asset management, WirelessHART can be applied throughout a process plant. However, the following applications benefit most from WirelessHART: - Difficult or expensive to wire routes - Rotating equipment using slip rings - Remote part of plant - Short term measurement to help solve process problems - Existing assets where plant availability can be improved by monitoring maintenance conditions with a plug-in wireless adapter How is redundancy dealt with? Will my existing HART configuration software work with WirelessHART or does it need upgrading? Some tools must be upgraded to support EDDs for HART 7 devices and adapters, but your existing HART configuration software will continue to work. You must add the new EDD/DTM/DOF for your new WirelessHART instruments just as you would if they were new 4-20 ma instruments. How many instruments can you have in one network? This depends upon the gateway capacity and data refresh rates required. WirelessHART networks today range up to 100 instruments per network with 60 second update rates. What is the maximum distance between WirelessHART instruments? Maximum range with clear line of sight is 250 m. On a process plant this will be reduced. As a rule of thumb the following provides a good guideline - Clear line of site in a process area = 150 M - Some Obstructions (pipes etc) = 75 M - High density = 30 M These guidelines should be the same for all WirelessHART devices with similar antenna to the FieldKey What new equipment will I need? - WirelessHART instrument or WirelessHART adapter installed into an existing instrument - WirelessHART Gateway - HART hand-held or other HART asset management tool (to set Network ID and Join Key) WirelessHART is based upon a mesh network where, provided one wireless instrument is close to another, redundant paths (if available) are selected automatically. - Mesh network provides redundant pathways back to the host system - Redundant paths are selected automatically - For a robust network, each device must have the option of three redundant pathways (i.e. it must have three neighbors) - Gateways are being developed with redundant features connecting to the host system Wireless Measurement 7
