Students will create a portfolio through sketching techniques, which will include initial stages of product development, research, logo development and final clothing line. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to define appropriate fashion terminology and explain the structure of the industry, the design process, and production and marketing of the fashion product. Course Goals: Acquire artistic and aesthetic perception and technical of the design process, production, and marketing of fashion as a product. Demonstrate an understanding of professional, ethical, and legal behavior consistent with applicable laws, regulations, and organizational norms. Apply appropriate problem solving strategies and critical thinking to work related issues and tasks in the fashion industry. Acquire an understanding of the relationship between history and fashion. Course Objectives: 1. Students will prepare written research reports explaining the scope, economic importance, and marketing practices of the U.S. fashion industry, and will define and use fashion terms correctly. 2. Students will develop a business plan that traces the fashion product from design to sale in both the U.S. and foreign market while explaining the impact of fashion imports into the United States, the reasons for imports, the government import regulations. 4. Identify the varied retailers of fashion and explain the differences among them in their merchandising techniques. 5. Students will identify through research and the industries that provide the raw materials from which apparel is made and how choosing the appropriate materials can make or break a business. 6. Students will identify major styles and designers of the day and discuss the contributions, importance and influence to the fads and trends of a given time frame in report form. 7. Each student will conduct a research project on the basic silhouettes in fashion history and their influences on trends, fads, and lasting fashion concepts highlighting a connection between fashion and history. ASSESSMENTS: 1. Students will be judged on a 5-point rubric for quality of garment created. 2. Students will be judged on a likert-type survey highlighting each element of a formal fashion show according to industry standards. 3. Students will be assessed uses peer review and a prepared Peer Review Checklist. Using the information on the Peer Review Checklist, students will then write a reflective constructive criticism of another student s work. 4. The student is expected to prepare a standard APA Style Guide Bibliography of all resources used in their project. The bibliography will be scored by 5-rubric for adherence to the APA Style Guide recommendations. 5. The student will be scored on appropriate use of research methods to gather the elements necessary to create a logo that reflect both industry standards and the essence of the student s individual clothing line. In addition, the student s logo will be scored using a rubric judging creativity, clarity of message, and aesthetics. 6. Student s documents will be teacher scored according to the industry standards for powerful resume writing. 7.
