Course Description Medical terminology is designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of health professions. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, combining forms, and abbreviations. Utilizing a body systems approach, students will define, interpret, and pronounce medical terms relating to structure and function, pathology, diagnosis, clinical procedures, and pharmacology. Students will use problem-solving techniques to assist in developing an understanding of course concepts. It is strongly recommended that administration and guidance follow the scope and sequence and course recommendations as listed. Recommended Credits: 1 Recommended Grade Level(s): 10th-12 th Number of Competencies in Course: 32 Note: In addition to traditional classroom instruction, Medical Terminology may be offered as a dual enrollment for juniors and seniors.

STANDARDS 1.0 Investigate and analyze the fundamentals of medical terminology including but not limited to word origins, basic word parts, prefixes, suffixes, root words and combining forms. 2.0 Investigate and analyze terms associated with body planes, cavities, directional terms, body systems, abbreviations, acronyms and symbols. 3.0 Identify, articulate, interpret and accurately spell medical terms related to the anatomy and physiology of body systems as they relate to diagnosis and procedures. 4.0 Demonstrate communication skills using the terminology applicable to the health science industry. 5.0 Identify, articulate, interpret and accurately spell occupational specific medical terminology and abbreviations for health care professionals.

STANDARD 1.0 Investigate and analyze the fundamentals of medical terminology including but not limited to word origins, basic word parts, prefixes, suffixes, root words and combining forms. 1.1 Interpret the historical development of the medical language including Latin and Greek origination of medical terms 1.2 Analyze medical terms with correct division and labeling of word parts 1.3 Create medical terms combining root, prefixes and suffixes. 1.4 Construct sentences using medical terminology work-building skills 1.5 Spell and define prefixes, suffixes, root words with 100% accuracy. 1.6 Apply concepts related to rules determining singular and plural endings 1.7 Summarize the documents found in a medical record and importance of confidentiality. PERFORMANCE INDICATORS; EVIDENCE STANDARD IS MET 1.1 Research the history of medical language and present finding in a research paper. Students will also verbalize early Latin and Greek forms of medical term. 1.2 Recognize parts of any given medical term and define each part. 1.3 Develop medical terms using roots, prefixes and suffixes. Define terms 1.4 Construct sentences utilizing correct medical terminology similar to that in a patient record. 1.5 Spell medical terms with 100% accuracy 1.6 Recognize correct usage of singular and plural forms of terms 1.7 Given a patient document define all medical terms within the document

STANDARD 2.0 Investigate and analyze terms associated with body planes, cavities, directional terms, body systems, abbreviations, acronyms and symbols. 2.1 Research the origins of eponyms then differentiate between eponyms, acronyms and abbreviations 2.2 Interpret and correctly utilize medical abbreviations and symbols within documentation. 2.3 Relate the importance of using caution with abbreviations 2.4 Interpret terminology in reference to anatomical position, directional and positional terms, body cavities, and body planes related to body structure PERFORMANCE INDICATORS; EVIDENCE STANDARD IS MET 2.1 Define the terms eponyms, acronyms and abbreviations then explain how each is related to medical terminology. 2.2 Given a scenario will correctly document using medical terminology 2.3 Relate the guidelines related to using abbreviations in all areas of health care 2.4 Educate a mock patient on terminology related to anatomical position, directional and positional terms, body cavities and body planes.

STANDARD 3.0 Identify, articulate, interpret and accurately spell medical terms related to the anatomy and physiology of body systems. 3.1 Analyze and interpret vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic and therapeutic medical terms and abbreviations related to the integumentary system. 3.2 Analyze and interpret vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic and therapeutic medical terms and abbreviations related to the respiratory system 3.3 Analyze and interpret vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic and therapeutic medical terms and abbreviations related to the cardiovascular system 3.4 Analyze and interpret vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic and therapeutic medical terms and abbreviations related to the musculoskeletal system 3.5 Analyze and interpret vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic, and therapeutic medical terms and abbreviations related to the endocrine system 3.6 Analyze and interpret vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic and therapeutic medical terms and abbreviations related to the nervous system. 3.7 Analyze and interpret vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic and therapeutic medical terms and abbreviations related to the lymphatic/immune and hemolytic systems. 3.8 Analyze and interpret vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic and therapeutic medical terms and abbreviations related to the gastrointestinal system. 3.9 Analyze and interpret vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic and therapeutic medical terms and abbreviations related to the urinary system. 3.10 Analyze and interpret vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic and therapeutic medical terms and abbreviations related to the special senses. 3.11 Analyze and interpret vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic and therapeutic medical terms and abbreviations related to the reproductive system

STANDARD 4.0 Demonstrate communication skills using the terminology applicable to the health science industry. 4.1 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown medical terms by evaluating professional journals. 4.2 Initiate and participate effectively using appropriate medical terminology in collaborative discussions surrounding medical legal/ethical issues. 4.3 Translate technical material related to health science industry. 4.4 Demonstrate appropriate verbal and written strategies such as correct pronunciation of medical terms and spelling in a variety of health science scenarios. PERFORMANCE INDICATORS; EVIDENCE STANDARD IS MET 4.1 The student will use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence, paragraph or text) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. 4.2 Conduct a mini research project surrounding medical legal/ethical issues and document findings using medical terminology. 4.3 Understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly when interpreting journal material. 4.4 Pronounce and spell medical terms at 100% accuracy.
