4 Preface Thank you for adopting Medical Terminology: A Living Language. Combined with your instructional expertise and guidance, this textbook and these resources will help your students to build medical language. By taking full advantage of what this textbook and these resources have to offer, you and your students will discover a system of learning medical terminology that is simple, yet challenging. By selecting Medical Terminology: A Living Language as your textbook, you have given yourself access to a wide variety of excellent text-specific instructional tools. In the pages of this preface that follow, you will be introduced to these resources. INSTRUCTOR S RESOURCE MANUAL The goal of this manual is to help you synthesize all of the resources you now have at your disposal in connection with your adoption of Medical Terminology: A Living Language. The manual is designed not only to aid your course preparation, but also to help you truly shine in the classroom. Each chapter follows a consistent format: Chapter Contents provides a summary of the essential content covered within the chapter and functions as a mini table of contents. Each chapter is organized by the Learning Objectives from the textbook. Also included in each chapter are Worksheets and Quizzes you can use in class. Media Library is a breakdown of all the media assets offered on the accompanying electronic supplements to the text. This list is chapter specific and gives you an overview of what is available for use with your students. There are all kinds of interactive games, videos, animations, and assessment activities for each chapter. Objective sections provide lecture notes, teaching strategies, learning activities, and assessments for each learning objective in the chapter. Also identified are the corresponding pages of the textbook and the slide numbers from the PowerPoint lecture (available on the Instructor s Resource DVD-ROM) for each learning objective. Worksheets provide you with a comprehensive list of unique assignment options directly correlated to the chapter content. Included are a broad range of activities that run the gamut from word building to labeling. Quizzes are provided to help you assess how your students have understood the material covered in each chapter. There are a variety of formats of quizzes available, including word building, abbreviations, multiple-choice questions, and matching to measure student mastery of pertinent information. An answer key is also provided. Test Bank contains 200 short-answer questions per chapter including: 75 multiple choice, 50 fill-in-theblank, 50 true/false, and 25 matching questions plus an additional 2 essay-style questions per chapter. Use these questions to create challenging tests to gauge student understanding of chapter content. An electronic version of the test bank can be found on the Instructor s Resource DVD-ROM. Medical Terminology Pearls of Wisdom. Dozens of highly successful medical terminology instructors from around the United States (see page PW-6 for a list of their names) shared their pearls of wisdom for teaching medical terminology. These tips from master instructors have been compiled and arranged in their own section at the beginning of this manual. Refer to this section often when you are looking for good ideas. If you wish to share your own ideas with Pearson/Prentice Hall, please send them to: Medical Terminology Pearls, Pearson Health Sciences, One Lake Street, Upper Saddle River, NJ INSTRUCTOR S RESOURCE DVD-ROM The Instructor s Resource DVD-ROM ( ) is available upon adoption and gives you access to a number of powerful tools in electronic format.
