It has over 18 brands under its belt including Parle-G, Krackjack, Hide & Seek, Bourbon, Milano, etc. It has a market share of 40% of the total Indian market. Parle Products has been India s prime manufacturer of biscuits and confectionery for almost 80 years. They are the makers of the world s largest selling biscuit, Parle-G, and a host of other very popular brands.
The greatest strength of Parle biscuits is the extremely widespread distribution network. Currently, Parle has over 4000 distributors spread across India along with their huge sales force. In the past, the distributors recorded sales and purchases through diverse software. Many a times, their staff was not able to update sales properly in the software due to technical glitches or lack of technical know-how. It was challenging for Parle to get a consolidated, accurate and timely report by all its distributors. Parle wanted a uniform tracking system as well as real-time update about these figures. Therefore, it decided to rollout DMS application to automate the sales process. A DMS Application or Distribution Management System (DMS) is a collection of applications designed to monitor and control the entire distribution network. Parle partnered with CMC to provide rollout and support services for the dealers across India. It designated CMC as a service partner due to its extensive experience in providing similar support and services to leading FMCG companies in India. In the first phase, CMC has successfully implemented the DMS application rollout for over 1000 distributors. It has started centralised helpdesk activity to provide timely and cost effective solutions for problems like system failures, product scheme download failures, bill generation issues, etc. over the phone and email. Business Challenge It was challenging for Parle to get a consolidated report related to sales, purchase, inventory, etc. by all its distributors. So, it deployed DMS application to keep track of sales and inventory in real-time. Parle also wanted to provide online and onsite support to dealer s employees for using the DMS application so that they are able to use the new reporting system with confidence. Therefore, it decided to explore the options for a service provider who could implement and support rollout of the DMS application at distributor s locations across India. Other IT service providers along with CMC pursued this project. But CMC was chosen as the preferred partner because of its support facilities across India as well as experience in dealing with similar projects for well-known FMCG companies. How we helped CMC helped the distributors to migrate from the diverse software to DMS application by installing the software at distributor points, giving training to their employees about its usage and handholding the distributor staff in the initial days of implementation. Use of DMS application gave Parle a uniform and ground level tracking system for all the activities related to sales, inventory as well as individual distributor performance. download failures, bill generation issues, etc. for the distributors across India. It provided training and handholding to the distributor s sales team till they were comfortable using the application. It deputed region wise onsite engineers so that they could visit the distributor s site within 12-24 hours for application failures which couldn t be resolved by the helpdesk. Benefits to the client 1. Outsourced project management to CMC: Parle vested all the operational responsibilities with CMC and only acted as an approving authority. It didn t have to deal with the DMS Application provider directly for business requirements. This helped Parle to focus on their key business. 2. Reduction in cost: CMC s cost effective solution like centralised helpdesk to give resolution over call or email helped in reducing project cost. The helpdesk rectified problems by remotely accessing distributor s system, using their own infrastructure, in effect bringing down the cost related to running an office set-up, hiring manpower, etc. for Parle. Parle was easily able to relocate their own IT officers to other projects saving the company resources. 3. Speed of operation: As the centralised helpdesk remotely resolves most of the issues therefore it gave timely resolution to the distributors which saved their business hours. The distributors were able to generate accurate and timely reports with the help of uniform tracking system like DMS. This helped to speed up the sales process. 3/6
4. Complete control over business: Real-time online sales and purchase report helped Parle to have complete control over the business. It could keep track of the stock and expiry date of the products at various distributor outlets which helped in planning future production of the biscuits. Distributor s productivity also increased as they could log all the sales accurately and on time. 5. Services across India: CMC has a strong support facility across India.
