Step 3: Setting up your domain What you need to do next depends on whether you ve registered a new domain or you plan to use a domain name you already have. When ordering (using New Order ), choose 'Domain name' (if you want to reserve a domain name) or Web hosting' and your preferred hosting location (for a full hosting account). A. Register a new domain: If you have registered a new domain as part of your sign-up, you don t need to do anything else to ensure your domain is active. Your website will not be visible immediately as it can take 24 hours for DNS propagation to take place. If your domain doesn t work after 72 hours, please contact us. B. Transfer an existing domain name: To transfer your domain name to Hetzner, you need to contact the company that currently looks after your domain registration to cancel your contract. You can then process the transfer using the Domain Transfer Manager (DTM) in konsoleh. C. Create a sub-domain: A sub-domain does not get registered with a registrar; however normal setup and hosting fees apply. Step 4: Create a webpage You can upload web pages to your hosting account using the FTP access details provided. http://www.hetzner.co.za/helpcentre/index.php/ftp-setup/ If you do not have webpages already, you will need to contact a web developer to design them for you or use SiteBuilder to create your website. http://www.hetzner.co.za/helpcentre/index.php/articles/categories/category/hetzners_sitebuilder/
If your domain DNS information is still being propagated, you will not be able to use your domain name as the FTP Hostname. Until the propagation process is complete, you should use the IP address instead. Use Temporary URL: Upon first activation of your web hosting package and the resulting registration of a new domain name (or the transfer of an existing one), you can use the interim URL to upload files for your website. When a domain name is registered or transferred, the domain name goes through the process of propagation, which typically lasts about 24 hours. During Propagation, the domain name will be unreachable on the Web. However, in order to get you started as quickly as possible, we have created a temporary URL that points to the same Web space that your domain name will eventually point to - automatically. Everything you do on the Temporary URL will be reflected in your domain, when the propagation process is complete. Step 5: Create an email address A single mailbox was created when you setup your package. This mailbox is webmaster@your-domain.com and acts as the 'catch-all' mailbox. This mailbox catches emails addressed to non-existent users. Additional mailboxes can be created via konsoleh by using the Mail tool under the Hosting Services menu option: 1. In your konsoleh control panel, click Mail 2. Select Manage Accounts
3. Click [ New Mailbox ] 4. The New Mailbox Account screen appears 5. Enter the new email address 6. Enter the password for your mailbox (ensure you comply with the strong password requirements) 7. Re-enter the password for your mailbox 8. Click [ Add ] Once you ve created your email address, you can access it via Webmail or your own email client software. If you have just created a new domain name, or are waiting for a domain name to transfer to Hetzner, it may be as long as 48 hours before you are able to send and receive email. Viewing your email You can view your email in two ways: A. Hetzner provides a web-based interface to your mailbox, called 'Webmail'. This enables you to check your message at any time from any location as long as you have an Internet connection and a browser. Using Webmail: 1. Access your konsoleh control panel at http://myaccount.hetzner.co.za 2. Log in using your full email address, and the case-sensitive password
Remember that you always have the option of using Webmail if you want to check your email and are not at your computer but do have access to the Internet. Even if you setup a program like Outlook to access your email, you can still use Webmail too. B. You can install and configure your own email client software to download your email directly to your own computer. Generic configuration information: Regardless of which client you use, the basic mail server settings are the same. For each program you are required to enter: The incoming (POP) mail server name: pop.your-domain.com (port 110) The outgoing (SMTP) mail server name: smtp.your-domain.com (port 587) The email account username: you@your-domain.com (the full email address) The email account password: (the password you ve selected for this account) SMTP authentication: If SMTP authentication is not catered for by your mail program, please use the SMTP server delegated by your Internet Service Provider instead (smtp.your-isp.co.za).
