The Engineering Services Section currently has 11 openings for Junior Engineers in the following areas: Design, Construction Inspection and Facility Planning. These are entry-level professional engineering positions. Metropolitan Engineers can expect to work on some of the largest water treatment and conveyance projects in the world. We deliver an average of 1.7 billion gallons of water per day to a 5,200-square mile service area in Southern California ranging from Ventura County to the Mexican border. Metropolitan owns and operates: 5 water treatment plants, the largest of which delivers 750 million gallons of water per day; The Colorado River Aqueduct, a 242-mile conveyance system designated as a national historic engineering landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers, which conveys 1.7 billion gallons of water per day from Lake Havasu to Southern California; 775 miles of pipelines, ranging up to nearly 20 feet in diameter; and Numerous pumping plants, hydroelectric generating stations, and support facilities. Metropolitan Engineers plan, design and manage construction of new facilities, and modify existing facilities to ensure delivery of high quality water to approximately 18 million people in Southern California. Applicants need not have a degree at the time of application. However, degree must be completed by date of hire, July 31, 2008. JOB REQUIREMENTS Minimum Requirements: A Bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university in an appropriate field of engineering OR successful completion of the California Engineer-In-Training examination. Physical Requirements: Class 2 Light Work This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stopping, or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved. Selection Procedure: The application and response to supplemental questionnaire will be used to screen an applicant s ability to meet the minimum requirements. Based on a comparative analysis, only those applicants demonstrating the strongest background will be invited for testing.* Those applicants invited for testing will participate in a multi-part competitive examination process. DESCRIPTION OF POSITIONS: Job #1: General Design Team - General Civil and Geotechnical Engineers (3) Openings These are civil engineering positions responsible for design of water distribution and treatment facilities. The work typically includes design and preparation of plan and profiles for pipelines, open channels, paving, grading and drainage, and may include geotechnical engineering analyses for foundations, retaining structures, excavations, and seismic hazards. Work Location: ;, CA Job #2: Pipeline/Facilities Design Team - Civil Engineer, with emphasis in Structural Engineering This is a structural engineering position responsible for design of structural elements for water distribution and treatment plant facilities. The work typically includes the design of water-bearing structures, buildings, and pipelines. These structures are predominantly constructed of steel, concrete, and masonry materials. Job #6: Field Inspection Teams - General Civil Engineers (3) Openings These are civil engineering positions responsible for engineering support to active construction projects. The work typically includes researching contract documents and project plans and specifications, and close collaboration with resident engineers, inspectors, project managers and design engineers. Additional work may include inspection duties on active construction sites, review of contractor-prepared submittals and critical path method (CPM) construction schedules, and drafting of documents related to construction contracts.
