Experience and Perspective of DVB- RCS two-way broadband services September 2005
Agenda Aramiska in short Service and Network Overview Lessons learnt Perspectives
Aramiska : Alternative in Business Broadband Founded in late 2000 and launched commercial service in Q1 2002 Originally provided broadband data communications services to European Small and Medium Sized Business (SME) Addressable market has now expanded to consumers through WiFi partnerships [CBO] and Larger Corporations Comprehensive range of Managed Broadband Services Around 2.500 remote sites mainly in the UK, France, Spain, Italy and Benelux. On going expansion to Eastern countries.
The Services: Overview Aramiska Managed Solutions Business Broadband Symmetrical Business Broadband Community Broadband Private European Network Back Up Premium Care VoIP Guaranteed Response Technology (GRT) Unlimited Data Transfer Aramiska Implementation Support
Network Concept : The Open Standards Vision Aramiska has built a unique Open Standards Based Network DVB-RCS The Aramiska network is the largest DVB-RCS based network in the world with state of Art features such as turbocoding or MF-TDMA. LINUX The Aramiska network is one of the largest distributed Linux networks in Europe with 2.500 Linux PC running multiple services and network management applications
Network Concept : The Open Standards Vision [con t] Benefits of DVB-RCS High Performance level Current technology allows to compete with the ADSL performance [3 Mbps down 1Mbps up] High reliability Fully redundant architecture allowing to exceed 99.95% availability Highly scalable network One blade of additional HUB FW and RT devices supporting 1.400-1.500 The current uplink facilities can sustain up to 10.000 customers Full control of costs Multiple Turbo coding schemes and MF-TDMA on the return link allow to reach high usage grades and consequently to reduce the space segment cost Interoperability Opportunity for a multi-vendor environment and consequently room to reduce the cost of equipments Benefits of Open Source High Performance level Current technology gives unequalled performance on all Internet applications [HTTP, FTP, ] High level of Quality Aramiska Monitoring System and Interface [AMI/AMS] Generation and processing of pre-configured Alarms, High, Medium, Low Importance and Unknowns. Releasing of new software automated through to situpdate system and linked to AMS/AMI for monitoring Reduce costs of operations All applications based on open source code allow to reduce the cost of development and operations
Lessons learnt : Positives The end-2-end service model developed is clearly meeting a demand on the market. Originally built up to target the SME business, the demand has now expanded to the residential via CBOs and corporate markets. Key differentiating factors on existing markets SME market Corporate market CBO market Needs Complete suite of ISP Services Secure tunneling Straight connection to Internet Key factors + 100% reach ability + Complete portfolio of solutions + Free Customer Support + Voice/Data integration + 100% reach + VPN solution + One stop concept + 100% reach ability + Low contention ratio + Voice/Data integration New potential market segments are emerging such as mobility and dual play
Lessons learnt : Negatives The combined effects of the expected market price and current cost structure are making the viability of the current economical model very questionable. Equivalent DSL services are seriously influencing the price of the services including in geographic area where broadband via satellite is the only solution available The space segment capacity is the critical cost element and clearly prevents to price the service in order to scale the business Equipment prices remain to high to address the lower end market segments Excessive cost of operation due to the complexity of the installation and the relatively poor reliability of the CPE compared to the DSL equivalent seriously impacts the operational margin
Perspectives In Western Europe, the conjunction of different factors will make it very difficult or even impossible for the service providers to make the current business model viable whilst there is a real demand for our services. The industry has still to build up an overall business model whereby all key players will find the right balance among themselves [space segment/ technology/service providers]. Provided that this model materializes soon, Aramiska will keep investing in service development and delivery in order to address the existing and emerging market segments not only in the countries where Aramiska is active now but all over Europe as well.
