INTRODUCTION PGI Training offers a range of forensic investigation programmes that are made available to international law enforcement agencies, emergency services, border agencies, military personnel, security services, maritime security, cruise vessel security and more. All training programmes are accredited by various higher education establishments and provide the would-be investigator with robust, specific and relevant training to ensure they have the skills to effectively examine all crime scenes. All PGI Training s staff consist of highly experienced subject matter experts, Police Detectives Crime Scene Managers and Forensic Scientists developing Police and Crime Scene Investigation programmes and specialist courses to meet the needs of any organisation. Training can be provided either in the United Kingdom at PGI Training s centre of excellence, in country at the host s training facility or a combination of the two. All training can be supported with a robust mentoring programme which ensures all the delegates are able to practice their new-found skills at live scenes with the help of a fully qualified scene investigator. 3

PART 1 - CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION TRAINING 4

1.1 Crime Scene Investigator Stage One 1.2 Crime Scene Investigator Stage Two (Advanced) The initial Crime Scene Investigator programme is a comprehensive course where each delegate will immerse themselves in classroom based presentations, practical exercises, group work, e-learning and reflective practice. The learning is student centred and they will be expected to take responsibility for their own learning with close support from their trainers. Each delegate will be assessed through a variety of written examinations, practical assessments and group activities utilising the facilities immersive learning suite. OBJECTIVES To equip the Crime Scene Investigator with the appropriate skills and knowledge to deal with all crime types and incidents as expected as part of their role. On completion of this programme the delegate will be able to: Demonstrate the photographic skills required for the role Recognise evidence types and interpret their significance Enhance and recover fingerprints using a variety of techniques Explain the investigative process Explain the role of the CSI in the investigation Gather information and intelligence to conduct an investigation Examine all crime types from burglary and theft up to homicide and bomb scene investigation Use crime scene management skills to take control of serious incidents. To consolidate the entire student s training PGI Training can offer in country support. Forensic and Crime Scene Advisors can be provided to ensure that all of the new skills are properly integrated into local law enforcement procedures, offering on-going mentoring and support at live crime scenes. PGI Training offer this 2 week course to all Crime Scene Investigators. The delegate must have completed the Initial Crime Scene Investigators course and who have also completed one year s work experience with their own law enforcement agency. The course is designed to enhance the CSI s skills and knowledge in major crime scene investigation. The delegate will have the opportunity to share crime scene experiences with the other members of the group and demonstrate how problems were resolved. Each delegate will be assessed through a variety of written examinations, practical assessments and group activities utilising the facilities immersive learning suite. The delegate will be developed in advanced Crime Scene Investigation which covers: Murder Investigations Sexual Offences Rape and Sexual assault Fire Investigation Firearms Incidents Terrorism The delegate will be introduced to specialist forensic disciplines which include: Forensic Anthropology and Archaeology Forensic Odontology Blood Pattern Analysis Firearms Bomb Scene Investigation NB: Subject matter can be discussed and bespoke training programmes can be created to ensure the students are fully equipped to carry out investigations in their own Policing area. OBJECTIVES On completion of the course the delegate will be able to: Demonstrate all the practical skills necessary to confidently examine scenes of murder, rape, arson and firearm incidents. Be able to maximise the forensic potential of all evidence types and prioritise submissions dependant on success rates, which will ensure early identification of suspects. Demonstrate knowledge of specialist forensic disciplines and how they can be used to assist with any investigation. 5

1.3 Crime Scene Manager / Coordinator PGI Training offer this 3 week course to experienced Crime Scene Investigators. The delegate must have completed the primary Crime Scene Investigators and Advanced courses and ideally hold or about to hold a supervisory position. The delegate must have also completed PGI Training s Leadership Development e-learning programme. The course is designed to enhance the CSI s skills and knowledge in major crime scene investigation to enable them to manage and coordinate complex investigations Each delegate will be assessed through a variety of practical assessments and group activities utilising the facilities immersive learning suite. OBJECTIVES On completion of the course the delegate will be able to demonstrate: Effective management of all major scenes How to address all Health and Safety, Risk assessment and Welfare issues Prioritisation of tasks and resources required Knowledge and understanding of selecting to correct scientific discipline to support the investigation. Managing personnel within the scene SIO liaison and briefing Ability to resolve problems e.g. contamination and scene preservation How to produce a comprehensive written record of the scene Coordinate all aspects of a multiple scene investigation. 1.4 Fire Investigation PGI Training offer this 1 week course to experienced scene investigators from the Fire Services, Police and Security Services. The course is designed to provide the delegate with the necessary skills to conduct a fire investigation. Each delegate will be assessed through a variety of practical assessment, written examination and group activities. OBJECTIVES On completion of the training programme the delegates will have developed their knowledge in: The nature of fire Principle causes of fire Recognising malicious fires (arson) Identifying the seat(s) of fire Accelerants and their recognisable features at the scene Practical skills in the approach to excavating the scene of the fire to determine the cause Information gathering, interview skills, dealing with witnesses and producing comprehensive notes Body recovery Fire Scene photography. Experienced Fire Investigators can be provided to ensure that all of the new skills are properly integrated into local law enforcement procedures, offering on-going mentoring and support at live crime scenes. 1.5 Post-Bomb Scene Management and Terrorism 1.6 Forensic Tracking (Ground Sign Interpretation A modular course, both theory and practical, to train students in the techniques and. procedures required by Bomb Scene Investigators when processing a crime scene in the aftermath of an explosion. Topics covered include a detailed overview of current IED devices and threats used by different terror and insurgent organisations, bomb scene examination techniques, bomb, scene team responsibilities and management, evidence collection, and collation and. processing. The training is a flexible mix of classroom teaching backed up by realistic, practical, tailored scenarios. At the end of the course the student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of: Recognition of component parts of a device; Blast effects Forensic recovery equipment and its use Forensic recovery recording and documentation Multi-agency approach to forensic scene recovery Crime scene investigation The principles of DNA collection Packaging methods Contamination issues. Forensic tracking is an art and science that has a proven track record. This service provides expertise in the field of discovering and identifying evidence at a crime scene such as footwear patterns and movement of a suspect in an arson investigation or after an act of sabotage has occurred at an industrial setting. Forensic tracking involves following sign (traces) or footprints, monitoring the subject s course, and carefully observing the persons movements during the course of the investigation. PGI Training s course teaches the forms of visual recognition skills used to identify minute changes in environments caused by victim or suspect. Utilisation of these skills may lead to further evidence recovery and provide vital intelligence that supports the investigation. 7

PART 2 - INDIVIDUAL WORKSHOPS (SHORT COURSES) PGI Training offer individual workshops to those new to field of Crime Scene Investigation or refresh existing skills. 2.1 Photography - Introduction - Know Your Camera 2.3 Photography - Advanced Evidence and Crime Scene DURATION: 1 DAY This session is geared toward individuals having either no or very limited experience with digital photography. An in-depth orientation provides the delegate with hands on training utilising the individual s photographic equipment. Once completed, the student will have a thorough understanding of basic photographic principles as well as a good working knowledge of the camera equipment that the delegate will be using on a day to day basis. 2.2 Photography - Basic Evidence and Crime Scene DURATION: 3 DAYS This programme takes the student beyond the techniques learned in the basic workshop. Topics covered include macro and close-up photography; oblique lighting techniques; multiple flash photography and photographic filter usage. Specialized shooting situations such as time exposure, multiple flash photos, bloodstain pattern documentation and panoramic photography are covered in this programme. The photographic work of each student is evaluated on an individual basis. Completion of Basic Evidence and Crime Scene Photography is required for enrolment in this advanced programme. DURATION: 3 DAYS All photography sessions are developed for the client based on the photography equipment that the client uses on a day to day basis. Basic Evidence and Crime Scene Photography presents detailed instruction in fundamental photographic principles and exposure to useful photographic accessories. Students are introduced to the approach and basic techniques used in documenting incident scenes. They complete a series of photographic exercises their finished work will be individually evaluated, once developed. 10

2.4 Photography - Injury and Bite Mark 2.6 Footwear and Tyre Track Evidence DURATION: 1 DAY This workshop is designed to meet the requirements of a sexual investigator. The students will be taught skills to accurately record injuries and bite marks that will support any sexual investigation. Completion of Basic Evidence and Crime Scene Photography is required for enrolment in this advanced programme. DURATION: 3 DAYS This three-day workshop is an intensive hands-on programme that will teach the student proper preservation, documentation and collection techniques. Students complete an array of practical documentation and recovery exercises that include photography, casting and the use of electrostatic lifting devices. 2.5 Photography - Fingerprint 2.7 Crime Scene Videography DURATION: 3 DAYS This workshop will concentrate on utilising macro and close-up photography to accurately record fingerprint impressions at crime scenes. The programme will cover the different lighting techniques required to; Illuminate the subject matter and produce the best possible image ready for comparison Completion of Basic Evidence and Crime Scene Photography is required for enrolment in this advanced programme. DURATION: 2 DAYS This workshop is designed to enhance the documentation skills of the Crime Scene Investigator. It will provide the investigator with a solid understanding of the role played by the proper application of video in various types of investigations. It will also teach professional video techniques that will assure high quality video results. This workshop utilises hands-on shooting exercises and is well suited for all personnel who will use video to document static incident scenes, such as crime scenes and fire scenes. 11

2.8 Writing Effective Evidence Reports and Scene Digramming 2.9 Writing Comprehensive Statements for Court DURATION: 3 DAYS This workshop is designed to give forensic service personnel the skills needed to identify and report relevant and sometimes technical information in a format that is clear and understandable. Students work through practical exercises that help sharpen their observation and written communication technique. Emphasis is placed on preparing reports that are logical, concise and accurate. Brief written reports completed by the students are evaluated in class. The course also includes practical skills in completing scene diagrams to accurately record evidence from the crime scene. DURATION: 2 DAYS This workshop will provide the student with the necessary skills to write a witness statement for court. Students will understand the rules of evidence in relation to statements and produce clear and concise statements of evidence. Understand the process of statement preparation Prepare witness statements to an evidential standard Understand disclosure in relation to files and court procedures Understand court procedures and etiquette when attending court Practice giving evidence in a mock court Discuss the effect of using notes when giving evidence Appreciate the importance of pre-court preparation Discuss the respective roles in the court process Enhance the investigators understanding of the court system and rules of evidence thus improving their ability to give evidence. 12

Crime Scene Investigation Equipment PGI Training have numerous crime scene kits available for purchase. Each kit is designed by experienced Crime Scene Investigators to ensure the operational CSI is fully equipped to examine any type of incident from theft and car crime to sexual offences and murder. A typical kit will consist of a tough and practical case containing camera equipment, light sources, packaging consumables, sampling kits (DNA, residues, firearm discharge) fingerprint enhancement tools (brushes, powders and lifting apparatus) and standard tools (utility knife, screwdrivers etc.). Custom kits can be produced to meet the clients needs. Custody Sampling Kits Evidence collection does not stop at the crime scene. PGI Training have numerous pre-packaged kits available to ensure maximum forensic recovery from suspects of crime. As soon as an individual is brought into custody suspected of committing a crime, the forensic recovery process can begin. Dependant on what crime has been committed PGI Training has an easy to use forensic recovery kit available.
