Lions District 8-I Newsletter Plan to attend NOW: District 8-I Sept-Oct, 2016 Lions Club International: Celebrating 100 Years of Service Volume 1, Issue 3 Convention will be Feb 4, 2017 More info on page 4-6 District 8-I Trivia Last issue we asked: What club is the largest in membership? Alexandria Lions Club What club is the oldest in District 8-I? Downtown Monroe What club is the youngest in District 8- I? Rayville Lions Club From our District Governor Lions of District 8-I. Have you ever felt like you were meeting yourself coming and going? If you have then you know how I feel at the moment. It s been a whirlwind since the last newsletter in August. As a consequence we missed producing a September edition. Thus the September/October edition of our District 8-I newsletter. Since our last edition I have attended the 8-N and 8- L conferences in Covington and Bossier respectfully; and just returned from the 8-O conference in Lafayette. It has been enjoyable meeting and getting to know other Lions from around the state. District 8-N and 8-O as I m sure most are aware suffered huge flooding issues and are only now beginning to see the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. They each received $10,000 emergency grants from LCIF to assist those in need in their respective districts. In this newsletter you ll read about our Eye Foundation and Cubsight program. While attending the different conferences, I slipped in an Eye Foundation board meeting in early August. There are great things taking place with your Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation. At the 8-N conference I had the opportunity to ear Dr. Jayne S. Weiss, Director of the LSU Eye Center of Excellence talk about the research they are doing at the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans. The LSU Eye Center and our Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation work hand in hand to help those in need. Our second District Cabinet meeting was held Saturday, October 22 in Alexandria at Logan s Roadhouse Restaurant. You can know that your District Cabinet is working hard to make District 8-I the best that it can be. Remember send our newsletter editor, Viola Britt, any information and pictures about your club and your clubs activities. We want to make sure others in our District know what you are up to. Until next time Barry Stevens District Governor District 8-I Cabinet members at work!

What club is the oldest in District 8-I? What club is the youngest in District 8- I? Spotlight: Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation Eye Exams & Issues YOUR Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation during Lion year 2015-2016 (July 1, 2015 thru June 30, 2016) served a total of 1,386 individuals for eye exams/issues. Of that 1,386 statewide, 200 came from District 8-I. Here's the breakdown... District 8-L 201 District 8-I 200 District 8-O 229 District 8-N 323 District 8-S 433 For a total of 1,386. TOTAL District 8-I Lions Clubs contributions to YOUR Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation for 2015-2016 was $38,000...even. 12 of our 27 clubs contributed in 2015-2016. One club contributed $22,700 of our total $38,000. Cubsight YOUR Louisiana Lions Cubsight Program in District 8-I screened a total of 3,987 children in 2015-2016. The Greater Ouachita Lions Club, with the Monroe Downtown Clubs, screened a total of 2,254 children. That represents roughly 57% of the total in our District. The Alexandria Lions Club screened more than 800 in fall of 2015 alone. Way to go, Lions! It s great that our Clubs are living up to the motto of WE SERVE! Check out the Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation website at http:// lioneyes.org/ for more information about YOUR Eye Foundation. Have you heard? The old Welch-Allyn Cubsight screening equipment is being replaced throughout the state as new equipment can be purchased. The new PlusOptix S12R screens for 6 conditions instead of the 4 that the old machines detected. So the referral rate has increased with the new equipment. Lions are reporting that the new equipment cuts down on the paperwork since the machine gives an immediate pass or refer reading. We also are hearing that, while it takes some training and experience, once you learn the new way, it screens much, much faster. More children can be served in much less time!

Cubsight Training on the new equipment was held in Alexandria. The Winnfield Lions Club joined the Alexandria Lions Club to learn how to work the PlusOptix S12R. The Pineville Lions Club is being trained as well. Isn t it great to see our Clubs working together? DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that District 8-I has a Facebook page? Here s the link https://www.facebook.com/ District-8i-Lions-Club- 517110945097389/ Lions Serve! HELP WANTED! District 8-I is in need of an Information Technology guru.
