Dear Prospective Student People want their lives to really matter in this world, to make an eternal difference. If you are a believer that wants to learn to move beyond mere talking into transformative dialogue with those in your care, our training could be of real benefit for your soul. If you want to truly understand and equip others to really live from their hearts, you may be in for a life changing experience that God will use to transform your own heart as well. If you are intrigued, read on! We are excited to be able to offer you a variety of courses designed for Christian leaders, lay workers, and students beginning the fall of 2014. This Biblical mentoring ministry we call Soul Care, is available through Genesis Institute, a non-profit (501c3) ministry established in 1994. We have just completed our 20th year working with hundreds of local church and community leaders! As our by-line states, we are a ministry committed in helping people to discover their story, and live from their hearts. Our commitment to see others live deeply from their hearts is a passion in all our ministries. I hope you can join us for this upcoming year learning to connect more deeply in people s lives as we grow together to bring the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ to care for other people. Genesis Institute Mission: We exist as part of the body of Christ to care for human souls, guided by the fixed point of biblical revelation. Genesis will endeavor to: * Counsel Biblically * Enable and encourage the Christian community to care for human souls * Proclaim that relationship with Christ is the ultimate answer to life s most challenging problems * Invite both believers and non-believers to live according to God s design, to worship and enjoy Him Soul Care is the formal training and mentoring arm of Genesis, providing multiple avenues to enable and encourage the Christian community to care for human souls through Biblical revelation and various interpersonal learning opportunities. We live in troubling times. Unfortunately, our culture has become largely a people without fixed points of reference to guide them in a turbulent sea of change and confusion. People need more than a quick fix. People long to know a lasting hope in the midst of navigating this unpredictable life. We want real answers that are available through Scripture fleshed out in caring and connected relationships. There are people that make up the body of Christ that have the desire and potential to encourage the caring of human souls. For this potential to be more fully realized, these helpers need learning opportunities, equipping, and active feedback - which is the primary focus of Soul Care. Whether you are a committed church leader, a caring non-professional, student, or fellow sojourner, you can benefit from one or more of these courses at Genesis Institute. Generally, courses will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Thank you for considering joining us in this journey to care for the souls of people needing to find God, and real hope, in the midst of life s challenges. Warmly in Christ, Dave Hutchins Executive Director MA Biblical Counseling He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. - Isaiah 61:1-2a
soulcare Biblical Training for the Local Church & Community Questions & Answers about Core Concepts in Biblical Mentoring What exactly is Core Concepts in Biblical Mentoring? Our foundational training for those who want to become more effective caregivers in their local churches and community. Core is our formal mentor training program for both lay and full time Christian leaders. Why is this class being offered through Soul Care Ministry? From our perspective, there is a large gap between churches and the professional community regarding what each is currently able to provide in the way of caring for souls. In most local churches a small number of staff and volunteers carry on usual and necessary programs, and can only deal with relatively few people with problems. In the professional community, a small number of staff and volunteers are overwhelmed with hurting people, and thus service is usually limited to those most needing help. Between these two available places of help are large numbers of people. Many are deeply struggling, but are unable to be helped through the usual programs. We believe that there are vast numbers of caring people who have tremendous potential to encourage strugglers on to God s highest purposes for their lives. For this potential to be realized, these caregivers need learning opportunities, equipping, active feedback; exactly what we seek to do through Soul Care. What is unique about Core Concepts? Someone going through both semesters of Core should be able to sit down with people over time, becoming more aware of what is underlying their real problems, to move with a sense of strength towards people s hearts, and to be a major influence in their lives toward spiritual maturity and personal growth. We call this mentoring, but we re also hoping for much more than that as people become more connected to each other in caring relationships. Our definition of mentoring is a relational experience where one person empowers another by sharing God given resources. Who would most benefit from taking this class? Pastors, pastoral staff, church leaders Anyone who is in a leadership position in a local church or parachurch, whether large or small. The training will enhance current ministry, but also help leaders think through the ability to expand the care giving aspects of church ministry without expending greater amounts of limited time, money and energy outside the local area. Lay leaders Key people who will actually carry out a Soul Care ministry within a local fellowship. Soul Care creates an avenue for mature, involved and caring lay people to have a significant impact as they are equipped within their local spheres of ministry. Students Anyone pursuing a ministry in counseling or social work degrees. Students would greatly benefit from the opportunity to move beyond their eclectic or secular training and see how a particular model of counseling, Biblically-based, is developed and implemented. What are some of the things a person should be able to do upon completing this course? In a ministry setting he or she should be able to: Help others understand a Biblical view of people, identifying key problem areas to be addressed to encourage a Biblical view of deep change Provide basic caregiver training within the local church to any and all believers who desire to improve their ministry effectiveness to impact significant heart change Organize and oversee ministry teams within the fellowship to provide deepened encouragement to others Facilitate small groups dealing with specific issues (e.g. marriage, parenting, healing from abuse, youth etc.) What will be taught during the semester? Fall Semester: (16-week course) A Theoretical Framework in Biblical Mentoring A Biblical and theoretical model of understanding people that explores the nature of our problems, provides solutions that promote deepened repentance and lead to spiritual growth. Spring Semester: (16-week course) Storytelling A model of Biblical mentoring utilizing personal storytelling as a powerful means of moving into a mentoring relationship is explored. Also presented is how this brings substantial help and deepens connection and transformation in community. Interactive small group format will be utilized in the second half of the course. How can I get more information about Soul Care, or sign up for other courses within the ministry? It has given me tools and insight that I have never heard of before. I am renewed and excited to connect with whomever the Lord brings me in contact with. There is so much to grasp in this course, we would all do well to take it several times it gives me hope, tools, and direction for the journey. -April ( 12) I feel like it is the most thoughtful, honest, and complete attempt I ve seen to join real life with the words in the Bible. -Christian ( 13-14) Great! The content was amazing~ approaching mentoring and relationships with the thought that it is not my responsibility to fix people, but rather to relate to them. What a joy to work together with Genesis Institute as we strive together to serve the Body of Christ. Both being para-church organizations, we share the common desire to help people to think accurately, live biblically, and serve the savior and His people effectively. We share the desire to build His church by discipling believers. We have full confidence in the leadership and staff of Genesis Institute, and are delighted to encourage our students to learn from them. This was a very informative, very convicting, very applicable course the importance of story and personal use of story by the instructor -Forrest, student ( 12) Those who are a part of the Genesis Institute Core Concepts class can earn college credit in Biblical Counseling from Moody Bible Institute-Spokane by enrolling in the college option and doing the extra required coursework.
