2013 Cherokee Spring Camporee April 5-7, 2013 Camp Rainey Mountain, Clayton, GA General Information LOCATION: The 2013 Spring Camporee for the Cherokee District will be held April 5 7, 2013 at Camp Rainey Mountain in Clayton, Georgia. COST/Registration: EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION $15.00 Early Bird registration is by March 21 st. DAY OF EVENT REGISTRATION $25.00* Late registration is March 30th (the Day of the Event) *Scouts registering/paying the day of the event (April 5th) will pay $25.00 per participant. If you register the Day of the event you cannot be guaranteed to receive the event Patch. REGISTRATION: Please complete the attached Registration form for those attending and submit it with your fees to the Jefferson Service Center (P.O. Box 399 Jefferson, GA 30549) or at Camporee Headquarters when you check in Friday night. THEME: This year s theme for Spring Camporee is Search and Rescue. Scouts will learn about Search and Rescue, complete a mock search and rescue event, and complete most requirements of the Search and Rescue Merit Badge. WHO: All Boy Scout Troops, Venture Crews, and Explorer Posts in the Cherokee District are invited to attend. Each troop/crew will be assigned to a group/team for the mock search and rescue event. Explorer Posts have the option to be a part of the mock search and rescue event as a participant or as a Staff Post. Please contact the Camporee Chairman to inquire about serving as a Staff Post. 1
MATERIALS NEEDED: Each Troop/Crew will need to bring a GPS unit and/or compass as well as a First Aid kit that can be carried in the field. Be prepared with all materials required! PARKING: After troop set up time Friday night, ALL vehicles must be parked in designated areas. Troop trailers may be left in the troop camp area. CAMPING AREA: The troop camping areas will be located in designated areas around the campground. TENTS WILL NOT BE PROVIDED! SITES: Troop campsite assignments will be made when you sign in at Camporee Headquarters on Friday night. Health and Safety All safety precautions will be adhered to throughout the Camporee. Report all unsafe conditions and actions to a staff member or executive staff member immediately. If the action is unsafe, stop the action IMMEDIATELY then report. -SCOUTS, USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM! EMERGENCY Protocol In the event of a lost child, notify District Executive and/or Camporee Chairman immediately, campers will be notified by a series of three (3) horn or cannon blasts. At that point ALL persons, scouts and non scouts will report to the Administration Building (Check In). There will be NO EXCEPTIONS! Everyone must go to the Administration Building. For everyone s safety, remain at the Administration Building for further instruction. First Aid Scout leaders are to be prepared to handle all minor situations. Each unit is to have a First Aid Kit in their campsite. Serious injuries and emergencies must be reported immediately to the Camporee Headquarters. There will be a trained medical technician present on site during the entire camporee. 2
Units having additional trained medical personnel present are asked to notify our Health and Safety Chairperson during check in or at the Scoutmaster/SPL meeting Friday night. The nearest full service hospital is Mountain Lakes Medical Center (196 Ridgecrest Circle Clayton, GA 30525) Uniforms Class A uniforms will be worn at flag ceremony and campfire Field or activity uniforms may be worn during the event No sandals, open-toed shoes, or Crocs. PROHIBITED ITEMS Fireworks, firearms (of any type), sheath knives, illegal drugs, and alcoholic beverages. Youth participants are NOT to carry communication or radio devices. Anyone bringing prohibited items will be required to leave with forfeiture of all fees paid. (Also refer to Guide to Safe Scouting.) Pets are NOT allowed. This includes visitors. Disability service dogs are permitted. RULE VIOLATIONS -The Camporee Chairman, in consultation with the Camporee Staff, will determine penalties for any violation of the rules. Rules will be communicated via future written communication OR communication at the Senior Patrol Leader meeting at the beginning of the camporee. -Any adults attempting to guide or coach their scouts beyond a reasonable amount will result in penalties assessed against the unit at the discretion of the Camporee Chairman, in consultation with the Camporee Staff. Water Water is available near or at the campsites. Units will need to provide their own water containers. Scouts should carry their own canteens or water bottles during all activities. Each unit should bring a water hose to help with clean up. Trash/Garbage BE PREPARED for all non burnable garbage and trash to be carried out upon departure. Dumpsters may be available. Ensure that all trash is in the dumpster NOT piled on top or beside dumpster. 3
If dumpsters are FULL CARRY IT OUT! If there are more than two units in a campsite, the units are expected to share shelters and other facilities and to clean them up together Campfires Digging of fire pits is prohibited. Use ground fires only, and only in designated fire lay locations. Units will be notified at check in or earlier, if conditions do not allow campfires. Under no circumstances will any tree be cut down. Use extreme caution with all fires. Keep all fires at a reasonable size; never leave a fire unattended and always provide adult supervision for all fires. Each unit must bring it s own fire extinguishers and fire control equipment. All units need to plan for camp stove cooking or no heat meals in the event there is a ban on campfires. Use camp stoves properly. The use of liquid fire starters is prohibited within the Boy Scouts of America. Visitors Visitors are welcome. They may observe all events, activities, visit unit campsites, and attend the Camporee Campfires. All visitors must leave the Camporee by 11:00 PM each night. All youth participants must be registered with a unit and pay Camporee fees. All visitors must check in at Camporee Headquarters and check out when leaving. 4

PROGRAM/EVENT DETAILS: This weekend s program will feature special instruction and events that will teach Scouts how to successfully carry out a search and rescue mission. Scouts will receive instruction in round robin format during the morning sessions. Troops will be assigned to round robin groups by the camporee staff at the SPL Meeting Friday night. A round robin schedule will be distributed at the SPL Meeting Friday night. After the morning instruction/events, troops will be given a mock scenario. Troops will be asked to develop an action plan during the lunch break. After lunch, all troops will gather as one to review their action plans with the instructors. Once action plans are reviewed, the camporee staff and instructors will begin the administration of the mock search and rescue event and will give instructions to each pre assigned group. Upon completion of the mock search event, all participants will gather together for a debrief session & review. Scouts will be able to earn most of the requirements for the BSA s Search and Rescue Merit Badge. ALL SCOUTS WISHING TO COMPLETE THIS MERIT BADGE WILL BE REQUIRED TO TAKE THE ICS 100 ONLINE TRAINING COURSE. Scouts completing this training will need to print their certificate upon completion of the Final Exam at the end of the course and bring it with them to the camporee.
