Google product overview The Google range of products offer a series of useful digital marketing tools for any business. The clear goal for all businesses when considering a digital marketing strategy is to be found by potential customers. With 96% of all internet searches in the UK conducted on Google, it is important to engage correctly with these platforms. 96% of all internet searches in the UK are on Google Search engine optimisation for Google and other search engines is explored in the Building a Website and SEO module. This module contains an overview of the other main Google products. The Google one account system The majority of Google products require a user to log in and Google operates a one account system. This means that when you have logged in once, you can access all of your Google applications without the need to log in again if you are using the same computer. Module 3 of this section demonstrates how to set up a Google account. Relevant Google products Google Adwords The use of Google AdWords offers a business the opportunity to have a greatly increased presence on the web. AdWords work on a cost per click basis; this is discussed in more detail in the Advertising Online module. AdWords can successfully be incorporated into a marketing strategy without significant expense. Online Marketing Toolkit 1

Google+ Google+ is a social media platform developed by Google to compete with Facebook. It has grown rapidly and now has over 500 million active monthly users. Rather than being just a social media platform, Google+ also integrates with Google Maps and the Google search engine platforms. Modules 2, 3 and 4 of this section explore Google+ in more detail. Google+ is already two thirds the size of Facebook after only 3 years YouTube YouTube is a powerful means of connecting with the hearts and minds of potential customers through the use of video. Rather than simple one-way communication through the use of website text, YouTube offers the possibility of two-way communication as potential customers can share and comment on videos. YouTube receives 1.2 billion unique user visits per month YouTube receives 1.2 billion unique user visits per month and is one of the most powerful digital marketing platforms available to small businesses. YouTube is discussed in more detail in the section Engaging Customers through Video. Google Analytics Google Analytics measures the performance of a website. It includes various tools to help analyse a site s content, how a user interacts with a website, interaction with social media and what types of devices are used to view a website. Google Analytics is examined in more detail in the module Using Google Analytics. Google Alerts Google Alerts are email updates of relevant Google results, based on specific queries. This is a useful tool for keeping in touch with subjects of interest, competitors and industry news. Using Google Alerts is an efficient means of discovering interesting content for use in blogs. Google Alerts are discussed later in this module. Online Marketing Toolkit 2

Google URL Shortener When creating links to webpages for use on blogs or social media platforms it can be impractical to use the full URL of the webpage as it can be very long. The Google URL Shortener is a tool allowing users to shorten links for use on any platform and keeps track of how many times the link is used. The Google URL Shortener is explained in more detail later in this module. Google search engine The Google search engine is the market leader and it is important that any business engages correctly with it to maximise their online presence. 96% of all internet searches in the UK are conducted on Google. Search engine optimisation for Google is explained in more detail in the Building a Website and SEO module. Google+ for Business Google launched Google+ for Business in July 2014 to encourage all businesses to promote themselves across various Google products from one easy to use dashboard. To access the Google+ for Business dashboard, go to your Google+ page and click on the small squares at the top righthand side of the screen. The dashboard allows you to quickly and easily track activity on your Google+ page and YouTube channel, monitor and engage with Google reviews, post content to your Google+ page and promote your business with paid advertising through Google Adwords Express. You can also make video calls with the Hangout feature. Online Marketing Toolkit 3

Google Alerts and how to set one up Google Alerts are emails sent to you when Google finds new results such as web pages, newspaper articles or blogs that match your search term. You can use Google Alerts to monitor anything on the Web. For example, you can use Google Alerts to: Find interesting content for your social media platforms. Track what s being said about you, your business and your competitors. Keep up to date on a competitor or industry. How to set up a Google Alerts Type Google Alerts into a search engine and then click on Google Alerts. Type in the search term you would like to track, e.g. a local attraction. TOP TIP Use Google Alerts to keep up to date with what is happening near your business You can choose to track everything or be more specific and just track news, videos or blogs. Manage your Google Alerts Click on Manage your Alerts to open the alert management screen. You can allow Google to pick when it thinks the results are the most relevant or choose to be notified of anywhere your search term appears. You can also set the frequency of alerts to daily or weekly, depending on the popularity of a search term you have chosen. Any alert can be edited or deleted from this screen. Online Marketing Toolkit 4

Using Google URL Shortener The Google URL Shortener is a handy tool which shortens a URL, making it easier to insert into a blog post or for using on social media platforms. It also has the added benefit of tracking, in real time, the number of times the link is used, allowing a business to determine which links are the most successful. To shorten a link using the Google URL Shortener follow these steps: Step 1 - Having logged in to your Google Account type Google URL Shortener in to a search engine and click on Google URL Shortener on the results page. Alternatively, type www.goo.gl into the address bar of an internet browser. Step 2 -Insert the long URL of the web page to be shortened and click on Shorten URL. Step 3 - Google will automatically shorten the URL, which can then be used in a blog post or on any social media platform. Having used a shortened link it is then possible to log back into the Google URL Shortener and you can see how many times the link has been used. This is useful in developing an understanding of what types of content are popular with your audience. The next module is Getting Started on Google+ Online Marketing Toolkit 5
