History 1910 to 1916 construction of Barmbek General Hospital (30 pavilions with over 2,000 beds). End of the 1990s: Senate decides on the construction of a new hospital. End of 2005: after 3 years construction work, the building is commissioned on the northern part of the plot by the Asklepios Klinik Barmbek (676 planned beds). It is decided that the site of the old Barmbek General Hospital, with its 21 remaining listed buildings, should be put to a new use. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg issues a tender to find a new owner for the complex. The Consortium (HOCHTIEF Projektentwicklung, HAMBURG TEAM and HASPA) purchased the site in October 2006 and developed a new usage concept. 2

The Concept With regard to its synergetic usage mix, Quartier 21 is distinguished by striking variety: home, work, life everything just outside the door. Development of an entire quarter with homes, gastronomy, retail, offices, medical services and public installations, as well as educational amenities on their own campus. Large-scale preservation of the existing trees and the listed buildings erected in 1910. 4
