2014 IIDA MAC Pinnacle Award Winner 2014 IIDA MAC Gold Award Winner
Nuclear Energy Institute The People Behind the Project Washington, DC 50,000 SF Completion Date: 2012 FOX Architects, LLC, an award-winning architecture and interior design firm, received top honors at the International Interior Design Association Mid-Atlantic Chapter s (IIDA-MAC) 2014 Design Awards. The firm s design for the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) headquarters earned the Gold Award in the Commercial, 20,000 100,000 sq. ft. category, as well as Pinnacle Award, the IIDA-MAC s overall top prize. This is FOX Architects second Pinnacle Award in the last four years. The NEI project was a strategic collaboration between FOX Architects and Wingate Hughes Architects. NEI engaged FOX Architects to help refresh the Institute s brand and create a headquarters that embodies its vision: Clean Air Energy. Inspired by a visit to the Calvert Cliffs nuclear reactor facility in Maryland, the 50,000 SF space reflects both the clean precision of nuclear power the space is unified by blue accent paint and LED light inspired by the Cherenkov Effect but also the warm, collaborative nature of the communities that grow around nuclear plants referenced in ample shared spaces. The FOX Architects team balanced collaboration and privacy by intentionally creating smaller private offices and shifting more square footage into larger collaboration spaces. Glass walls help open up and illuminate the office area, which connects to the highly flexible conference center and central NEI-borhood Café through an enclosed staircase constructed of steel, glass and floating terrazzo treads. We re honored to be recognized by our fellow designers and industry peers, said Bob Fox, Founding Partner. Our goal is always to enliven a space with the personality and vision of its occupants, and especially in the case of the NEI headquarters, I believe this award is well-deserved. Congratulations to our team. The project team surveys the site of the monumental stair.

Branded glass panels connect the reception and conference spaces. These semi-transparent panels display abstracted patterns from nature to convey rhythm, energy and the hidden science and math within. Natural woods and stone are thoughtfully woven with formative metals and glass on all floors to communicate the balance between nature and technology.
A visual hub of activity was generated to facilitate NEI s conferencing needs. Advanced intuitive technological upgrades were integrated to convey the organization s need for flexible, mobile and interactive communication and emergency outreach capabilities.
The pure, crisp cafe provides a multi-purpose, flexible space for employees to meet, socialize and collaborate. The cafe is positioned along a window line and allows transparency for light to travel to the interior space. Its central location offers a destination and community to increase connectivity.
The terrazzo interconnecting stair is the focal point of the space, bridging the many facets of the organization. Spanning three floors vertically, the stair accentuates a metal mesh backdrop with various shapes and textures that combine to create a unique aesthetic. Clear glass guardrails allow a visual flow of energy. To intensify the nucleus of the space, a blue glow back-lit compliments an intertwined pendant and organic honeycomb feature wall, furthering the idea of connectivity.
Glass office fronts with film were incorporated to allow natural light to flow into the core space giving the impression of openness while balancing privacy. Smaller offices were intentionally designed to encouraged connectivity.
