Introduction MeyerMemorialTrustMMT)hascloselyworkedwiththeCoalitionofCommunitiesof ColorCCC)forthepastsixyearstodevelopculturallyspecificleadershipdevelopment programs.currently,mmtisinterestedinunderstandingtheneedforandavailabilityof leadershipdevelopmentprogramsacrosstheregionforcommunityleaders,inparticular thosefromcommunitiesofcolor.itisessentialtomentionthatleadershipdevelopment programsvaryinitsfocus.programmingrangesfromadvancingtheindividual's professionalcareer,educationalgoalstocommunityrelatedissues. MMTreachedouttotheNextGenerationInitiative:OregonandHatfieldFellowsbasedout ofportlandstateuniversity'scenterforpublicservice.thisprogramprovides opportunitiesforgraduatestudentstobeapartofanorganizationfor10weeks.itisan opportunityforthegraduatestudenttoworkonanintenseprojecttargetedtotacklinga publicservicechallenge.aspartofmyoregonfellowship,iwasmatchedtommttowork onconductinganinitialenvironmentalscanonleadershipdevelopmentprogramsacross theregion. Theinitialcatalogwastheresultofa10Vweeksummerproject.Thisisnotacomprehensive catalogofallleadershipdevelopmentprograms.duetotimelimitations,only25programs and1annualstudentconferencewereinterviewed.mmthopestocontinuethesupportof leadershipdevelopmentprogramsforthebenefitsoffutureparticipants,andbyextension, foralloregonians. Purpose Thepurposeofthisprojectwastobuildaninitialcatalogofleadershipdevelopment programsinoregon.thestudyfocusedonthoseprogramsthatdevelopnonprofitand potentialpublicserviceleaders,emergingandgrassrootsleaders,andcommunity organizers.additionally,meyermemorialtrustwasinterestedinidentifyingtrends,needs, andopportunitiestosupportthesustainedgrowthofcommunityleadersinoregon. Methodology Thisprojectinvolvedliteraturereview,threeinterviewswithleadershipexperts,and35 semivstructuredinterviewswithprogramstaff.selectionoftheprogramstointerviewwas determinedbyasetprioritylistthatincorporateddiversityandavailability.onaugust1, guidedfocusvgroupdiscussionwith12representativesofdifferentleadershipdevelopment programstookplacetobestunderstandprograms'needsandchallenges. Findings LeadershipDevelopmentprogramsvariedincurriculaconcentration,location,andsize. 25leadershipdevelopmentprogramsandoneleadershipconferencewereinterviewed representing22differentorganizations.eightdifferentfocusareaswereidentified: 3

Ingeneral,allprogramsseektobuildtransformationalleaderswhocanfurtherthe agendasofsocialjustice.whetheritisfocusedonracialequity,environment,oreconomic development,thesefutureleaderswillworktoadvocateforpositiveoutcomes. TheinterviewsrevealedagrowingtrendinadaptingamodelofPopularEducationwhen conductingleadershiptrainings.thepopulareducationmodelallowsforparticipantsto engagewithoneanother,sharetheirknowledge,andlearnfromthecollectivewisdom. Thismodelrecognizeseachmember sexperienceandvalueseachvoiceinthecohort. Asfarasneeds,someoftheareaswhereprogramsexpressedinterestingettingassistance wereinassessmentandcontinuedsupportofalumsbeyondtheinitialinvestment. Oneoftherecognizedneedsinleadershipdevelopmentprogramswasthelackofsustained supportbeyondtheinitialinvestmentinparticipants.uponcompletionoftheleadership developmentprogram,alumsfindthemselveswithlimitedopportunitiestosustaintheir leadershipdevelopmentgrowth.programswouldliketobesttrackalums,offersupportive servicesandmoreopportunitiesforalumstoputintopracticethelearnedskills. Recommendations ThereareopportunitieswheregrantVgivingagenciessuchasfoundationscancollaboratein supportingleadershipdevelopmentprograms. 5

Interconnectprogramswitheachother Onesuggestionwouldbetointerconnectprogramswitheachother.Theinterviewed programsrevealedinterestinfindingoutwhattheotherprogramsoffered,howthey troubleshootprogrammingissues,andhowcouldtheycollaboratetooffermore efficientprogramstoparticipants.thisinterconnectionispartlydonethroughthe productionofthiscatalog.purposefullyintroducingprogramswitheachotherand facilitatingdiscussionamongstthemcanfollowtheinitialefforts. Offertechnicalassistancewithfocusonassessmenttools Anotheropportunityinvolvesputtingresourcesbehindprojectsforassessmentdesign, itsuse,andunderstanding.programsspokeofthebenefitofhavingsupportininternal capacitybuildingrelatedtoassessment.programswanttohaveimprovedassessment toolsthatcancaptureparticipants'feedbackandprograms'performance. Supportnetworkingopportunitiesforprograms'staff Otherbenefitistoprovidenetworkingopportunitiesforprograms'staff.These networkingopportunitiesshouldallowforsharingoflessonslearned,strategiesthat workedanddidnotworkwhenworkinginleadershipdevelopmentprograms.manyof theorganizationsprovidingleadershipdevelopmentprogramsarenonvprofits,witha limitednumberofstaffdedicatedtothetrainings.byprovidingopportunitiesforthese programs stafftolearnfromoneanother,theycanbesttroubleshootprogramming issuesandwouldfostercollaborativerelationshipthatwouldbenefitparticipants,and byextensiontheoregoniancommunity. Sustainleadershipdevelopmentamonggraduatedparticipants Programssharedtheirchallengeswithtrackingofalumsandsustainingthe participants'leadershipdevelopment.opportunitiestoconnectgraduatedparticipants withprofessionaldevelopmentrolessuchasservingonboardsorcommissionswould beidealfortheirgrowthcontinuum.itwouldalsoaidinprograms'trackingsince programswouldprovideopportunitiesforinvolvementbeyondtheinitialtraining. 6
