GRADUATE SCHOOL 2015-2016 I m working on bringing nuclear fusion energy to consumers Graduate program * This major is formally part of the Computer Science & Engineering Bachelor program

Graduate program Applied physicists have a different view of the world around us. Physical phenomena turn into challenges, fascinating questions to investigate and analyze. However, an applied physicist will go one step further by applying knowledge of these phenomena in new technological developments. These are ambitious endeavors, in which working in teams with people from other disciplines is often a central factor. Research carried out in the graduate program focuses primarily on nanoscience & technology (NANO), transport physics (FLOW), plasma physics (PLASMA) and nuclear fusion (FUSION). A total of twelve research groups is working on these focal areas, each spanning the entire chain of knowledge from fundamental to application-oriented research. This means that as a student you will be able to define your own area of emphasis within each specialization, with the choice of a more practical, numerical or theoretical approach. Within the graduate program, the following programs are available: Master s degree programs Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion PDEng programs Design and Technology of Instrumentation (DTI) School of Medical Physics and Engineering Eindhoven (SMPE/e) PhD programs Master s degree programs Within this program you will specialize in one of the focal areas NANO, PLASMA and FLOW. Two internships, one in the first year and one covering the full second year of the program, guarantee the optimum balance between theoretical background and experience in several research environments. The program s research has a broad scope, as well as an extensive network of contacts. These contacts with research institutes and high-tech companies worldwide enable you to do internships in environments fitting your interests. After graduation you could find a position in the research laboratories of organizations such as Philips and ASML, or in smaller companies and engineering firms. Since you have learned how to analyze and solve problems, you will also be able to work in (management) positions outside the field of physics. You can also continue studying for a PhD degree, a PDEng degree in the PDEng program DTI, or train to become a Qualified Medical Engineer, or a Medical IT Professional via the School of Medical Physics and Engineering Eindhoven (SMPE/e). Graduation options Within the master s degree program, you choose one of the focal areas NANO, PLASMA and FLOW as a specialization. Transport physics (FLOW) focuses on the fundamental aspects of transport processes in fluids and gases. Plasma physics (PLASMA) explores the world of plasmas and their applications as well as applications of ion beams. Nanoscience & technology (NANO) focuses on the control of materials on an extremely small (nanometer) scale. It involves emerging technologies that enable scientists to address and position individual atoms and molecules. There is also the possibility to gain the Theoretical Physics for Technology certificate intended for students with extra interest in the more theoretical and fundamental aspects of the chosen specialization. Please contact the Information officer of the graduate program or visit the website for more detailed information about the three graduation options. Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion The development of nuclear fusion as a safe, clean and inexhaustible energy source has culminated in the construction of the test reactor ITER. Here, the science of extreme conditions extreme temperatures (hundreds of millions degrees), extreme heat fluxes, extreme complexity has to be translated into technological solutions. This provides both a challenge and a career perspective to master s students, and calls for the training of a new generation of fusion researchers. Eindhoven University of Technology has selected fusion as one of its high-profile areas, and offers a unique master s degree program whose goal is to deliver highly qualified engineers in fusion science and technology. The

I m working on bringing nuclear fusion energy to consumers Ivana Abramovic Master s degree student, graduate program, Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion Solar energy and nuclear fusion are the best bets for solving the world s energy problem. Nuclear fusion produces a lot of energy, minimizes nuclear waste, and is very controllable there s no chance for a nuclear disaster. For my graduation project, I ll be working on the diagnostics in an inertial fusion facility in the United States. I already knew I wanted to work on nuclear engineering. TU/e s Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion is a unique master s degree program at the frontier of research, so it was a no-brainer. TU/e also has good collaborations with laboratories worldwide. What I most enjoy about studying at TU/e is the atmosphere it s very comfortable and stimulating, with a lot of international people. It pushes you to do your best. After my master s, I d like to stay in research and go for a PhD. PDEng programs curriculum is set up such that it prepares for a career in fusion research as well as in a broad field of high-tech, innovative industry. Graduation options Fusion education at the TU/e is at the interface of applied physics, mechanical and electrical engineering and centers on the combination of advanced measurement technology, control systems technology, plasma-surface interaction and microwave technology. Graduation projects in many cases are carried out in an international environment within associated groups in the Netherlands (the FOM Institute of Plasma Physics), Europe (the Joint European Torus JET, all major national fusion laboratories, and soon also the international reactor ITER) and the rest of the world. A double degree program enables students to obtain master s degrees in both and Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion. This program requires an extra half year s study load. For all master s degree programs Study possibilities: Full-time, part-time (by arrangement) Degree: Master of Science Language: English Times of entry: At the beginning of each semester Duration: 2 years (120 ECTS) Design and Technology of Instrumentation Following your master s graduation, you can continue on to the Design and Technology of Instrumentation (DTI) PDEng program within the graduate program. High-tech industry needs experienced technological designers able to design new products and technologies. A master s degree gives you the requisite theoretical knowledge and experimental skills; a PDEng program teaches you how to use this knowledge as a professional design engineer. This boosts your market value for industry. The PDEng trainee has the status of a TU/e employee. That means you will receive a salary and have excellent secondary conditions of employment. You graduate with a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree. The program consists of half a year of courses and three projects: two with a duration of three months and one with a duration of twelve months. Instrumentation forms the basis for measurements in a broad range of sciences and high-tech industries within a multidisciplinary context. Instrumentation extends from MEMS oscillators or optical chips at micron scale to

density measurements of dredger slurry in pipes of more than a meter diameter. Careful analysis of the customer needs is essential to finalize the design specifications and approach of the project. Study possibilities: Full-time Degree: Professional Doctorate in Engineering Language: English Times of entry: Anytime of the year Duration: 2 years www.tue.nl/dti Qualified Medical Engineer (QME) Qualified Medical Engineer (QME), has been established to support the fast and safe introduction of new technologies in the medical field. The QME operates like an engineer would in an industrial environment: he/she ensures that inventions from others are introduced in a robust way in daily practice. In addition to engineering skills, medical knowledge and especially communication with the healthcare professionals are crucial in this process. Certification of the QME program is in progress. A QME trainee is on the payroll of the hospital and partly at the TU Eindhoven. Clinical Informatics (CI) Clinical Informatics, is focused on IT solutions in healthcare. The Clinical Informatician is responsible for the robust and safe introduction of Information Systems in the medical field. In-depth knowledge of IT, processes in health care and excellent communication skills are essential for the execution of the projects.
