2. LIBRARY CATALOGUES VS WEB? 7

A hybrid situation Traditional library catalogues confined to physical objects Other solutions for e-journals (AtoZ etc) Discovery tools Most ILS conceived before the era of the web 8

4. A FUTURE FOR NATIONAL TOOLS? 21

Shared referencing solutions for French digital resources. Project objective: To provide an exhaustive cartography of documents available in France covering all French online resources whatever their method of acquisition (national licences, institutions current subscriptions and so on). 23

3 scenarios Scenario 1 Based on a commercial discovery tool for all online resources which would recover all corresponding metadata. Access to full text versions of documents would be provided via a central link resolver combined with local resolvers. The public interface is the discovery tool or a overlay thereof. Scenario 2 Based on a specific IT development. The metadata concerning both the description (including full text, to do indexing work)) as well as copyright status are recovered from each publisher (cf Trove). The public interface would be a tool such as Vu-Find. Scenario 3 Based on Google Scholar. Access to full text is provided using a central link resolver combined with local resolvers. 24
