Hybrid Clouds Are Delivering Real Results Today We achieved four times the efficiency for half the cost. You can do the math. Jim O Neill, CIO Rackspace hosted applications will include the public-facing ecommerce site www.dominos.co.uk, as well as the online payment gateway, corporate email and back-office systems, and the company intranet linked through RackConnect. Colin Reed, IT Director For us, a hybrid cloud is the best of both worlds. It delivers on its promise of improved performance and scalability of the cloud while empowering us to keep our high-performance apps that need to scale vertically on managed hardware. Matt McClure, Vice President, Chief Architect 5
Newer Technologies, Same Problems 6
It s a Nice Neighbourhood Networks & physical machines shared with other tenants, can t rely on consistency of performance in network, storage and compute. Response time of each node is not constant, it is a range of values, often measured experimentally - Markovian Some nodes become unavailable/unresponsive, your model breaks Overall response time becomes dependent on probability equations 7

Why this matters BUSINESS Accessed via API, like public cloud. Utility service, charged by the minute - much simpler and more powerful than VMs/public cloud. Built on OpenStack software and Open Compute hardware. The API for OnMetal is the OpenStack Nova API. It s familiar to users of any OpenStack public cloud. Users don t have to worry about vendor lock-in. OnMetal servers are customized for specific workloads. No hypervisor, and no virtualization tax. No sharing of metal with any other user. TECHNICAL All solid-state, no moving parts. Less heat + Less vibration = higher MTBF. Optimized for specific workloads. We have servers customized for databases, for lowlatency caching, and for handling web requests. Our database server, for example, offers 3.2TB of PCIe flash storage, 128GB of RAM, and more than 200,000 IOPS. Specializing the gear not only boosts performance but helps keep costs under control. We believe the network should have consistently low latency. OnMetal cabinets use 10-gigabit networking and minimal network over-provisioning. 10
