1. INTRODUCTION TO THE UNIVERSITY MIGUEL HERNÁNDEZ (UMH) 1.1 SHORT INTRODUCTION The Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche (http://www.umh.es) (Erasmus Code E ELCHE 01) was established in 1997 with the aim of offering society high quality education, research and services, which will fully satisfy their expectations. At the same time, it permits members of the university community to develop professionally in order to achieve the integral development of students and help them in their entry into the working world. Although the main administration offices are in Elche, the UMH has five campuses; Orihuela-Salesas, Orihuela- Desamparados, Elche, San Juan and Altea. At each Campus official degree/diploma courses are taught, within the corresponding faculties and schools. 1.2 STUDIES At present the UMH offers more than 30 first and second cycle degree/diploma courses, postgraduate courses and doctorate programs. HOW DO I BECOME A SOCRATES ERASMUS STUDENT AT THE UMH 2.1 BEFORE COMING TO THE UMH It is important to remember that the UMH only accepts students from institutions with whom a Bilateral Agreement has been signed. If you are interested in coming here as a Socrates-Erasmus student and there is no Bilateral Agreement then you should contact your coordinator and try to establish an agreement. It is not usual to accept any European student outside the Socrates-Erasmus program, although there are special cases which have to be looked into with the corresponding UMH coordinator. The study period is between three and twelve months. 2.2 DOCUMENTS AND FORMS REQUIRED BY THE SOCRATES-ERASMUS STUDENT 1. Application Form and Learning Agreement signed by the Socrates-Erasmus coordinator at your own university. To be sent either to the UMH coordinator or the International Relations Office before 15 th July for both 1 st and 2 nd semester. The student can use either his/her own university forms or download the UMH forms. http://www.umh.es/ori 2. Health insurance forms E-128, E-111, valid throughout the members countries of the EU. 3. National Identity Card or Passport. To be photocopied in the ORI once at the UMH. 2.3 WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT THE UMH You should go to the International Relations Office ORI- at your campus or the Coordinator (see point 1.5) and hand in the documents listed in point 2.2. The ORI will notify you so that in a few days time you can officially enrol at the Centro de Gestión (Management Centre) of the corresponding Campus. You will have to pay an student s insurance (about 3 euros). You can get your university card there. 2.4 WELCOME DAYS The ORI usually organizes Welcome Days during October and March so that Erasmus and local students can meet each other.

2.5 DOCUMENTS AND FORMS REQUIRED BEFORE RETURNING TO YOUR UNIVERSITY You should consult with the coordinator of each course (see point in order to send the"transcript of records" to your University. The ORI will also sign a certificate to certify your stay at the University Miguel Hernández. 3. FINDING ACCOMMODATION The UMH does not have student accommodation. Upon request, the ORI helps students find accommodation by putting the students in contact with landlords, or families or other students who they can share with. The price ranges between 100 and 200 euros a month in shared flats and more than 250 euros a month for individual appartments Fill in the Accommodation Form and send it along with a copy of your Application Form to the ORI. (See point 10) Notice that San Juan, Elche and Alicante are very close each other. You may choose living in Alicante and studying in Elche or San Juan, although accomodation in Elche and San Juan uses to be cheaper. 4. HOW TO GET TO THE UMH The five campuses which make up the UMH are all situated in the province of Alicante in a radius of 50km. Due to the proximity of the Airport El Altet, the port of Alicante and the railway the university has an ideal communication network. By car From Madrid take the N-III to Alicante and then the A-7 towards Valencia as far as Altea. ALTEA From France, Valencia or Barcelona take the A-7 motorway, exit 65. The Campus of Altea is situated near the old Town and about 500 m from the train station and the main bus stops From Madrid take the N-III. ELCHE ORIHUELA From France, Valencia or Barcelona take the A-7 motorway in the direction of Murcia. The Campus of Elche is situated in the Av. Del Ferrocarril, opposite the Bus Station and 200m from the Railway Station. From Madrid take the N-III as far as Alicante and then the A-7 towards Murcia. From France, Valencia or Barcelona take the A-7 motorway in the direction of Murcia. The campus Desamparados is situated on the road to Beniel. There is a bus route from Orihuela. The Campus Las Salesas is situated in the Historical Centre of Orihuela at about 200 metres from the Town Hall From Madrid take the N-III as far as Alicante and then take the N-332 in the direction of Valencia. SAN JUAN From France, Valencia or Barcelona take the A-7 motorway in the direction of Murcia. Take exit 68 to San Juan, then take the N-233 to Valencia and follow the signs to the University hospital. The faculties are next to the hospital.

By plane The airport El Altet has direct flights to and from the main international airports, it is situated 10km from Elche, 80km from Altea and has access to the A-7 motorway, N-332 and N-340. SPANISH COURSES The International Relations Office organizes free Spanish (Castillian) courses for all Socrates- Erasmus students at the UMH. The groups are formed according to the linguistic level of each student. Duration: - From Octobre to February : 60 hours. - From February to June: 60 hours.

ACTIVITIES AND FACILITIES IN THE UMH 6.1 CULTURE AND SPORTS In Elche there is an agreement with the City Council for using the city s sports installations, and with the university card it is also possible to use the Club de Campo (Country Club). In San Juan it is possible to do sports at the centre Previsón Sanitaria. A university card is necessary. The vice-rector for Cultural and Social Activities organizes different cultural and sports activities for all students at the UMH. Among the cultural activities there is cinema, theatre workshops, Spanish guitar, digital photography and ballroom dancing Sports activities include organizing internal championships besides forming and organizing teams which represent the UMH in different Local and National championships. Week-end ski-ing trips are also organized during the wintwer period. Finally, different volunteer programs are coordinated, particularly in relation to the Environment. 6.2 COMPUTER ROOMS All the UMH Campuses have a computer room where students can have free access to carry out practicals and assignments, as well as to the high speed Internet. 6.3. UNIVERSITY CANTEENS The UMH Students can eat in the university s different canteens, which offer cheap meals for students.

6. THE UMH CAMPUSES ARE SITUATED IN THE FOLLOWING TOWNS

7.1 ALTEA Altea is 50km from the city of Alicante, 120km from Valencia and 10km from Benidorm. Apart from being a well-known and popular seaside resort, it is also an important meeting place for all types of artists; painters, sculptures, potters etc. Desde Madrid, 476 Km. de autovía conducen hasta Altea; desde Valencia, 130 kilómetros; y desde Alicante, 50. El aeropuerto de Alicante está a 61 Km. y la N-332 Valencia-Alicante atraviesa Altea. También se puede llegar a través de la A-7 (Alicante-Barcelona). It has all the facilities and installations of a modern european city. Besides this Elche has become one of the few cities to be acknowledged by the Patrimony of Humanity UNESCO. The awards have been for the city s most significant symbols of identity; El Palmeral and El Misteri d Elx. Elche is a 25 minutes bus ride from Alicante city center. El Palmeral is a natural park with tousands of palm trees which surround the historical city, and el Misteri is the only Mystery play that is still performed in a christian temple since the Trento Council.
