INTER-OFFICE CORRESPONDENCE LOS ANGELES UNFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT LOCAL DISTRICT EAST TO: Elementary Principals Date: 9/21/15 FROM: SUBJECT: David Baca, EdD, Administrator of Instruction 2015 2016 ELEMENTARY INTERIM ASSESSMENTS The District has provided several options for schools regarding interim assessments. Schools may give the Smarter Balanced Blocks (IABs), the District s CCSS-aligned interim assessments in ELA and Math, or give the CCSS-aligned interim assessments determined by the school and approved by the Local District Superintendent. Each school, working with its Director, will identify the specific interim assessments to be used. All schools should consider administering interim assessments at least twice prior to the Smarter Balanced summative assessment. Local District East highly encourages using the Blocks as they align with the summative assessments, and they offer students repeated opportunities to test using the same platform they will use on the summative assessment. The assessments are formative in nature and teachers should use the information gathered to refine instructional practice in order to improve student achievement. Thank you for your time and leadership. (*Note: All date windows are suggestions only.) 1

Local District East Elementary Math Guidelines Please note that the following suggested guidelines are for those schools that are using My Math as the main teaching tool in mathematics in grades 3-6 and started with the first listed in the Curriculum Maps, including the First 10 days. Smarter Balanced Consortium Blocks ( IABs) should be used to inform instruction. Blocks only assess the s that contain major clusters. Consider embedding additional and supporting clusters through major clusters in other s and assess using other resources from My Math and/or the District Bank. Based on the assessment windows, you may not have taught the given in its entirety, but will have baseline data on the given. IABs may be given as pre- and/or post-tests.
