SharePoint 2013: Cloud v/s On-Premise: As Microsoft has released SharePoint 2013 with its online counterpart in the latest Microsoft Office 365, the IT decision makers now must choose whether to deploy it On-premise or use the latest Cloud-based iterations of the collaboration platform. Features of SharePoint 2013 Cloud (Online): Features of SharePoint 2013 On-Premise (SharePoint Server): Web Content Management (WMS): Enables File sharing, Check In-Out, Records declaration, retention and disposal policies Expanded Social Computing Enables advanced collaboration within the SP environment and supports wikis, blogs, forums, meetings through community portals Enhanced Search Offers Enterprise search on documents, metadata, items and Search indexing for faster results Mobile Computing One can have Optimized viewing experiences across mobile platforms Branding Helps to Custom design of site pages through customization of HTML, CSS & JavaScript Office Integration Helps to use the features of SP to create, manage and share documents easily Office Integration Helps to use the features of SP to create, manage and share documents easily MY Sites Acts as a central location for users to track their tasks and access the documents and sites they follow Newsfeed Helps users to keep current updates with people and content through real-time micro blog and status updates Follow Allow people to add quickly and easily the links and references to the content on My Site. Benefits of Cloud: Benefits of On-Premise: Hardware or software maintenance is not required as everything is hosted in the cloud As the solutions reside on the cloud accessing is easy and anywhere Runs very quickly, hence useful for development and testing Automatic SharePoint updates are available Cost effective compared to On-Premise installations Reliable Microsoft offers 99.9% availability on its servers Hardware can be scaled in order to meet the requirements SkyDrive Pro provides enhanced cloud storage, sync of documents, better task management, a revamped search engine and sharp e-discovery features. With the Content Management System (CMS) improvements, new User Interface is easy to use, customize and add functionality. Themes are easy to apply and customization is very simple using tools like SharePoint Designer. The organization controls the entire hardware and environment Can be easily integrated with the external systems like SAP, CRM Restart, backup, update complete system maintenance is controlled Control over where the data is stored Control the updates and patches to the existing software Performance is tied to the infrastructure and to any thing called cloud On-Premise environment is needed in the big organizations where services like finance services, file sharing, search crawling, corporate intranet are carried out Multi-server farm is possible only in On-Premise Data deployment is comfortable and secured Services like alternative access mapping, remote blob storage, host header site collections, request management, distributed cache, request throttling, shredded storage, usage reporting logging are available On-Premise Maintaining a farm on cloud is very cheap compared to On-Premise where the hardware and software expenses are high 4

Drawbacks of Cloud: Drawbacks of On-Premise: Data sensitivity / Storage concerns No idea of where the data is stored SharePoint 2013 setup for On-Premise is complex and intricate Migration is difficult without the third party tools Development of machines requires significant hardware requirements Custom server-side software which requires configuring will not work Deployment and setup requires additional IT skills The development environment is very restricted Responsibility and cost of the hardware, SharePoint server, SQL, Client Access License lies with the organization Conclusion: SharePoint 2013 Cloud is a great product for CMS, small scale intranets and with its new templates one can build product catalog websites. Also its new architecture, improved social tooling and deeper integration with Office delivers look-andfeel and performance matching the consumer sites and services. Office 365 customers can have access to the benefits of new features than On- Premise deployments as some features of Online would never reach the On-Premise platform. The new SharePoint 2013 means that though being a small or medium sized business, the owner can take full advantage of the latest cloud services and can enthrall the clients with the impeccable content collaboration tools. Also, this technology is moving at such a fast pace that within few years majority will be in the cloud. Thus both small and large scale industries can go for SharePoint 2013 Cloud. Hence, if you have always been meaning to hop on to the cloud platform then this is an easy, cost effective and technically bullet proof way.
