TRACK 1 Annual Meeting & Update Seminar (KS/OK) Topic Summaries Understanding Common IRS Penalties (2 hours) Penalties are the cornerstone of noncompliance deterrence. From 1955 to present, the number of penalties enforced by the IRS has increased from 14 to more than ten times that. This course is designed to help you understand common IRS penalties and options for obtaining relief from those penalties. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: Identify common penalties assessable against a taxpayer. List the four categories of penalty relief. List the four steps in drafting a penalty abatement letter. Identify common penalties assessable against a tax professional. Options for Paying IRS Debt (4 hours) Taxpayers often struggle to pay their taxes on time. Recently, the IRS has provided some streamlined options for taxpayers to get on the right track to paying their tax liability. Being able to help a delinquent taxpayer can be a very valuable service to your clients. This course is designed to help you understand the IRS collection process and procedures and the rights a taxpayer has to settle a delinquent tax bill. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: Identify when Form 2848 or Form 8821 is used to obtain authorization. Identify the IRS collection process and the procedures used by the IRS to collect delinquent taxes. List the various alternatives a taxpayer can use to extend the time to pay delinquent taxes. Identify when a taxpayer qualifies for a streamlined installment agreement. Determine the amount to be offered to compromise the tax liability.

SPEAKER BIOS KS Annual Meeting & Update Seminar Tracks 1 and 2 Nolin Christensen KS Chapter NATP Instructor Nolin is a tax professional and has been preparing taxes for 28 years. He worked for H&R Block for 10 years before branching out on his own. He started his personal business by going to people s homes to do their returns. With laptop and printer in tow, he would prepare and print their return while he was in their home. With the growth of his business he no longer goes to people s homes and now has his own tax practice in downtown Wichita. He specializes in sole proprietor returns, especially multi-level marketing businesses. Nolin is a current member of NATP and has been since 2010. He has taught tax classes prior to belonging to NATP. Teaching is something that he loves to do and has taught at various venues across the country, including Brigham Young University. At the 2014 conference in Orlando he became accredited to teach for NATP and is looking forward to help expand tax professional s knowledge regarding tax preparation. Mary Giesler Enrolled Agent-MPG Accounting Mary is an Accredited Tax Professional and has earned her enrolled agent status. She is a member of the National Association of Tax Professionals and served as President of the Kansas Chapter of the National Association of Tax Professionals for 3 years. In 2004, she was elected Chairman of the Chapter Advisory Council which she chaired for 2 years. During 2004, she was nominated for the Tax Professional of the Year award and was featured as a Tax Professional of the Month during 2005. In 2007, she was no longer allowed to serve on the KS-NATP Board of Directors as she had served 9 years and had reached her term limit. Since that time, she has continued working with the Chapter by serving as an advisor to the Board of Directors, and heading up both the Membership & Scholarship Committees. In 2010, she became a certified chapter instructor and has been assisting with teaching individual topics for the KS Chapter seminars.
Timothy Graham, Jr. Enrolled Agent-R & J Salina Tax Service, Inc. I have been working in a tax office since 2001 and actually doing tax returns since 2006. In March of 2010 I became an Enrolled Agent (EA). I have a large client base, involving various types of returns which include a variety of business returns. The office that I recently purchased is a clients full service for their personal and business tax needs. My knowledge base is broad in tax preparation, representation, QuickBooks, and payroll services. In 2005 I joined NATP, and in 2006 became a member of the Board of Directors for the Kansas Chapter. In 2010 I become the President for the Kansas Chapter of NATP, remaining until 2013. I am also the education chair for the Kansas Chapter and have been since 2009. I enjoy trying to bring a new and young perspective to the Chapter. I have attended the National Conference since Austin, Texas and don t plan to miss another National Conference. I have also started to teach classes for the state chapter, and would like to expand those teachings later in life. I have a Bachelor degree in Accounting from the University of Phoenix, which I completed in 2007. I am thinking in the future of going for a Masters in Taxation. I have been married since 2006 to, Jessica Graham, my loving wife. We have 5 kids of the four legged kind, including two cats and three 3 dogs which are all Dachshunds. We are also active in the community with the Chamber of Commerce, Downtown, and Military Affairs Counsel. The family, community, work and NATP events help to keep me very busy throughout the year. Michelle Thompson Oklahoma Public Affairs Officer Michelle is the Public Affairs Officer, Communications Division for the Oklahoma Tax Commission. Their mission is to serve the people of Oklahoma by promoting tax compliance through quality service and fair administration. This will be Michelle s fourth year speaking to tax professionals at the KS-NATP Annual Meeting in Wichita on Oklahoma Tax Updates.
Carl York Kansas Tax Specialist Carl is a Tax Specialist with the Kansas Department of Revenue. His current assignment entails providing customer education at small business workshops, income tax workshops and other educational seminars. He developed several inhouse and public spreadsheets that streamlined operations, including the electronic Net Operating Loss spreadsheet. He is a graduate of Benedictine College where he received his Executive MBA.
