HI Issue no. 2 May TARGETING FURTHER EXPANSION HOLIDAY ACCIDENT CLAIMS SUPPORTING SIA AND HEADWAY SOLDIER CRITICISES MoD SERIES OF SHOCKING SAFETY FAILURES FUNDING CUTS HIGHLIGHTED

WELCOME TO THE SPRING ISSUE OF HI At a time when the legal sector is undergoing a period of considerable change, I am delighted to let you know that Hilary Meredith Solicitors has entered into an agreement with Yorkshire Bank to provide additional working capital to assist with our growth plans. During our discussions with Yorkshire Bank the firm was also awarded the highest possible A rating following a comprehensive audit by Zebra Legal Consulting the highest ever rating awarded to a law firm. With summer just around the corner, this issue also focuses on trips abroad. Over 40 million foreign holidays will be taken by UK holidaymakers in 2014 - and unfortunately some will end in accident or injury. Wherever you are in the world, the team here can help with your accident claim - although we hope we never have to. This issue also highlights the excellent work done by two of the charities Hilary Meredith Solicitors has worked closely with over a number of years, Headway and the Spinal Injuries Association. Anyone at any age could suffer a life changing incident resulting in serious injury and both charities help to transform the lives of hundreds of people every year. We are huge supporters of everything they stand for and achieve. Enjoy the read. All the best

HILARY MEREDITH SOLICITORS TARGETS FURTHER EXPANSION Hilary Meredith Solicitors has secured a 3 million package with Yorkshire Bank which includes additional working capital to assist with our growth plans. Chief Executive Officer Hilary Meredith said: The legal sector has undergone a period of considerable change with the ban on referral fees, in particular, having a major impact on the personal injury market. However, we see that process as one which offers the firm new opportunities for further growth and we believe our new arrangements with Yorkshire Bank will be invaluable in supporting our objectives. We took the decision some months ago that the time was right to change funding partners if the firm was to develop as we would want. In addition, a key factor was the due diligence carried out by Zebra Legal Consulting, experts within the sector, which resulted in our firm being awarded an A rating following an extremely thorough independent audit of all our activities. Zoe Holland, managing director of Zebra LC added: The due diligence audit carried out by Zebra s Major Project Team underlined the firm s outstanding internal processes, the technical ability of its team and its core financial stability and profitability as a business. For a personal injury firm to secure funding in what is such a turbulent and changing marketplace underlines the Bank s confidence in Hilary s strong leadership. Zebra s role highlights the importance of detailed and specialist due diligence when it comes to financing decisions in the legal sector.

HOLIDAY ACCIDENT CLAIMS To get the most enjoyment out of your holiday, follow our checklist below: Always take out travel insurance and make sure it covers what you want to do on holiday - water sports, for example. If you are purchasing your holiday from a tour operator, always ask what is included. Be cautious about booking excursions with local travel agents they may not be insured. Also be cautious about hiring cars and bikes they may not be insured or adequately insured under their policy or your own travel policy. If you are inexperienced, do not hire jet skis or go scuba diving or take part in other potentially dangerous water sports unless adequate instruction and supervision is given by qualified staff and safety equipment is provided. Do not dive into swimming pools unless you are told by signage that it is safe to do so at that location. If you are involved in an accident, take photographs and video footage of the scene and record the contact details of all witnesses. Report everything to your tour operator and get a copy of the incident report form. In serious cases involve the local British Consulate. Keep evidence of all your financial losses. Wherever you are in the world, the team here can help you with your holiday accident claim.

SIA celebrates its 40th anniversary Hilary Meredith has paid tribute to the outstanding achievements of the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) as the charity celebrates 40 years of rebuilding lives after spinal cord injury. Anyone at any age could suffer a life changing incident resulting in spinal cord injury or develop an illness that leads to damage to the spinal cord, says Hilary. Over the past forty years, the SIA has transformed the lives of thousands of people who have suffered spinal injury. We re huge supporters of the charity and everything it stands for. Hilary has worked closely with the SIA for over twenty five years and is a founding member of the Cornflower Ball held for the last 17 years in support of the SIA. It is also the largest charity fund raising event of the year for the SIA. Attended by the North West legal community including solicitors, judges, barristers and related legal services including carers and the medical profession, Hilary says this year s Cornflower Ball, which took place at Manchester Airport s Concorde Conference Centre on 20 March, was the biggest and best yet with 700 guests. It was a brilliant evening it always is, says Hilary, whose firm s logo was shown on the wings of Concorde at the event. Hilary further contributed to the fundraising effort by putting together a WAGS day out with the help of local businesses. The prize included a chauffeur-driven car for two to a host of indulgent cosmetic treatments including hairstyling, manicures, pedicures, eyebrow tints and eyelashes. Once pampered, the luxury continued with a VIP lunch - all donated by Style Lounge, Gusto,Cheshire Chauffeurs, Mark Worthington Jewellers to name a few. The support of the local community to this event has been amazing, added Hilary.

soldier CRITICISES MOD A client of the firm who became infertile after being injured by a bomb in Afghanistan has launched a bitter attack on the Ministry of Defence (MoD) after heartless officials rejected his bid for a Forces sperm bank. Sergeant Rick Clement, 35, began a campaign for the MoD to store samples provided by soldiers after a Taliban landmine blew him up in 2010, causing appalling injuries and leading to the loss of both of his legs. Sgt Clement s injuries prevent him from having children or a sex life, and led to the break-up of his marriage he and his fiancee Leanne Isaacs went ahead with their wedding after the blast only for the realities of his condition to drive them apart. The soldier, from Blackpool, said: This is devastating news. I fear that, as a result of the MoD s decision, more soldiers will be denied the pleasure of fathering children. Many cannot afford the cost of storing their sperm privately. Others may take their fertility for granted. The MoD has enough medical facilities to incorporate a sperm bank. I know what it is like to feel that you re not a man any more. A guy can t feel much worse than that, and I wouldn t wish that on anyone. The MoD has let soldiers down in a bid to save money, it is heartless. Speaking in support of Rick, Hilary Meredith also attacked the MoD s decision, saying: The Government s lack of commitment to assisting these seriously injured soldiers is hugely disappointing. The least they could do is allow these men the gift to father children post-injury, which would cost so little given the happiness this would bring.

False economy of funding cuts The government is facing a ticking time bomb by reducing brain injury survivors access to support and rehabilitation services, according to Headway - the brain injury association and Hilary Meredith Solicitors. The result of simultaneous cuts to local authority budgets and welfare benefits reform are having a detrimental effect on the physical and psychological wellbeing of brain injury survivors and their carers, says the charity. The study of people directly affected by brain injury has revealed that in the past two years 48% of people receiving rehabilitation and support to regain their independence have lost access to vital services as a result of cuts to local authority or NHS funding. More than two thirds (70%) of respondents stated they will require increased and more expensive long-term support from the state in future if they do not receive the help they need now. This report indicates that people who need help to cope with life after brain injury are being abandoned - and that s a tragedy said Hilary Meredith, CEO at Hilary Meredith Solicitors Ltd. The charity also launched a separate study to examine the impact funding cuts are having on the network of more than 120 Headway groups and branches as they face increasing pressure to support people in need. The survey of Headway groups and branches backed up the survey of individuals affected by brain injury, with all respondents stating they were concerned about the impact welfare benefits reform was having on those that rely on their services.

series of shocking safety failures Hilary Meredith Solicitors Ltd represented the family of UK soldier, Rob Wood, who died in Afghanistan when a fire engulfed the tent he slept in. Rob, 28, and Dean Hutchinson, 23 died in the blaze at a logistical centre at Camp Bastion in the early hours of 14 February 2011. Mr Wood and Mr Hutchinson were sleeping in a tented office so they could respond quickly to the arrival of essential supplies. The two men were eventually identified by their dental records, the inquest heard. This inquest heard how two British soldiers died in a fire at Camp Bastion after a series of shocking safety failures, said Hilary Meredith. The office where Royal Logistics Corps troops were working and sleeping had no working fire alarm as it appears someone had removed the batteries. The only exit they could have used to escape the blaze had also been sealed, leaving them trapped inside, added Hilary, who represented Rob Wood s parents, his partner Rebecca and son Noah (3 years old). David Ridley, Wiltshire and Swindon Coroner, condemned a string of contributory factors to the deaths. The MoD now has to reply in writing with details of actions that have been taken to prevent future similar deaths.
