2 INJURY & NEGLIGENCE I always had confidence in Pannone and I wouldn t hesitate to recommend them. Rebecca Glover, Wigan BASIC - Brain And Spinal Injury Centre BASIC is affiliated to the Greater Manchester Clinical Neuroscience Centre and works in close collaboration with the staff there to meet the needs of patients within the community. They offer over 30 rehabilitation services to individuals and families that are largely left to cope on their own with the consequences of brain and spinal injury following discharge from hospital. They provide practical support and advice on cognitive rehabilitation, self development and welfare benefits and debt management. They also offer a back to work service where they are able to help get you back into employment. You may also benefit from undertaking one of their training courses which they offer on topics such as creative writing, arts and crafts, cookery, plus many more. They also offer stress management counselling along with a range of complementary therapies including aromatherapy massage, acupuncture, reflexology and massage. BASIC have a state of the art power assisted exercise facility at their centre in Salford with equipment specifically designed for people with physical disabilities who need exercise but cannot use a normal gym. They also offer advice on diet and nutrition. BASIC also offer emotional support by way of counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, relationship support, bereavement counselling, self help groups and music therapy. They also have a confidential National Helpline. CONTACT BASIC: HELPLINE Eccles New Road, Salford, M5 5AP W enquiries@basiccharity.org.uk
3 Page 3 BRAKE - The National Road Safety Charity It is a very sad but true statistic that every 30 seconds, someone, somewhere, is killed in a road crash. Brake is a charity which campaigns to stop the carnage and supports victims of road crashes. Brake produces a range of literature to support those bereaved or seriously injured following a road crash. Literature includes information and advice around the immediate practical issues people may face, coping with emotions and feelings following a crash, criminal prosecutions, and finding appropriate legal support. Brake also operates a helpline, providing support to those directly affected by a crash or their carers, whether the crash happened recently or a long time ago. It is also for professionals, such as health workers, who need information about how to help people affected by a crash. The helpline officers can provide support in four key ways: Emotional Support; Information and Advocacy; Accessing Legal Support; Sourcing Counselling and Other Support Agencies. Officers will also signpost callers to other national and local support organisations as appropriate to their needs. Brake also campaigns to raise awareness amongst the public about tragedies caused by road crashes. It is their aim to make our communities greener and safer for everyone. Brake believes that together we are stronger and that by working as a team we can effectively help save lives and support the families that are bereaved or injured. Whether you re a victim, carer, driver, cyclist, parent or you just want to help, you can do so. Pannone made me feel valued. They were reliable, friendly and always looked after me. 5 Page 5 HEAD FORWARD CENTRE - For Social Rehabilitation After TBI The Head Forward Centre is a registered charity day centre situated in Manchester which offers social rehabilitation after TBI. TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) is clinically defined as damage to living brain tissue that is caused by an external or mechanical force. The Head Forward Centre offers attendees who have suffered a brain injury the opportunity to socialise and make friends, receive counselling, discuss any problems or concerns they may have and mostly readjust at their own pace. The centre encourages attendees to take part in different activities such as: Arts & Crafts, Crosswords, Computer Skills, Relaxation and many more. These activities are led by experienced staff and volunteers who help the attendees address the various difficulties they may be facing, encouraging them to achieve their potential at their own pace. Head Forward staff are not only there to provide support and advice for those with TBI - they are also there to offer advice to the families and carers. To help do this, the Head Forward Centre provides individual meetings with the attendees and his or her caring relatives to discuss any concerns they may be having and offer some expert guidance or advice if required. 6 INJURY & NEGLIGENCE I have recommended Pannone to friends of mine when they ve needed help. Tony Black, Manchester HEADWAY - The Brain Injury Association Brain injury can challenge every aspect of your life walking, talking, thinking and feeling and the losses can be severe and permanent. It can mean losing both the life you once lived and the person you once were. Headway is the UK-wide charity that works to improve life after brain injury. Through its network of more than 100 groups and branches across the UK, it provides support, services and information to brain injury survivors, their families and carers, as well as to professionals in the health and legal fields. At Headway, people use insight and care to help survivors regain some quality of life through a wide range of services, including rehabilitation programmes, carer support, social re-integration, community outreach and respite care. On a national level, Headway provides a range of frontline services to help those affected by brain injury, including: a freephone nurse-led helpline an emergency fund to assist people dealing with the financial implications; Headway Acute Trauma Support (HATS) nurses to support families whose loved ones; an award-winning website containing information and factsheets on all aspects of brain injury; an award-winning range of booklets to help people cope with the effects of brain injury; a network of over 100 groups providing physical, cognitive and social rehabilitation and support; a directory of approved residential homes, rehabilitation units and respite facilities. The charity also lobbies for better support and resources to be made available to people affected by brain injury and works to raise awareness of brain injury and the devastating effects it can have. 7 Page 7 ROADPEACE - Supporting Crash Victims & Campaigning For Justice A road death is not a normal death; it is sudden, unexpected, violent and always premature. Every day 5 people are killed and over 200 people are injured in the UK in crashes, with around 65 people suffering life changing injuries. Families find themselves suddenly thrown into an unfamiliar world with little support available. As well as dealing with the terrible emotional toll of a road death or injury, families, often for the first time, have to deal with the criminal justice system and legal proceedings. RoadPeace has been helping families cope with the aftermath of a road crash since they were founded in Their support services include a national helpline, traumatic bereavement support programmes, befriender service and a local group network. An extensive range of post-crash legal guides and advocacy services can help families navigate the criminal justice system. RoadPeace also co-ordinates the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, which takes place every year on the third Sunday of November, as well as August National Road Victim Month. These important remembrance ceremonies provide an opportunity for personal remembrance, as well as public recognition of the terrible toll of road death. RoadPeace s support for crash victims includes campaigning to improve the way victims are treated within the criminal justice system by calling for improved police investigations, appropriate prosecution and sentencing of drivers who kill or maim, effective inquests, and fairer compensation. They also want to prevent future victims and campaign for safer streets supporting road danger reduction polices that give greater priority to people walking and cycling. RoadPeace is a membership-based charity and encourages anyone who has been affected by a crash, to join and support their campaigns. Pannone put me at ease straightaway. 8 SIA - Spinal Injuries Association The Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) is the leading national user-led charity for spinal cord injured (SCI) people. They are there to support SCI people and their families, whether they are being treated in a Spinal Cord Injuries Centre, District General Hospital or Armed Forces Rehabilitation Centre, and will continue to support them for the rest of their lives. All of SIA s Outreach Services team are spinal cord injured and they draw from their own knowledge and experiences as they support you in coming to terms with your injury, finding motivation for rehabilitation and rebuilding your life at home. We believe that the best support comes from our peers. Nothing can be more reassuring and motivating than speaking to someone who has been through the same experiences. When you are ready, they can assist you as you look at options available for returning to work or education, or developing volunteering opportunities and hobbies. SIA also offer various different Master Classes and training days aimed at spinal cord injured people, but they are also available for families, carers, health professionals or any other professionals with an interest in the field of spinal cord injury. You can also contact them for confidential support as and when you need it via their resourceful website, free Advice Line and Telephone Counselling service.
