KOREA UNIVERSITY Korea University, founded in 1905, is widely acknowledged as one of the oldest, largest and top-ranked universities in Korea. As a major comprehensive university, KU offers a rich variety of courses in liberal arts sciences as well as in professional fields, such as law, medicine and business administration. The KU campus covers over 182 acres and is home to more than 35,000 students from Korea and all over the world. With its stately stone architecture, sprawling lawns, seasonal trees and natural flora, KU is known to have one of the most beautiful campuses in Korea. The university s academic breadth is extensive with its 81 departments in 19 colleges and divisions, and 18 graduate schools and it has over 1,500 full-time faculty members with over 95% of them holding a Ph.D. or equivalent qualification in their field. KU has particularly strong Humanities and Asian Studies Departments along with the recently established Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS). KU is also renowned for its professional schools of Law, Medicine and Business Administration. In research, KU is an internationally recognized leader with over 100 research centers, including the East Asiatic Research Centre and the Korean Cultural Research Centre. Furthermore, Korea University Business School (KUBS) is the first and only business school in the country to have acquired both European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) accreditation in combination with accreditation granted by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Unlike many universities in Korea, KU prides itself not only in being a progressive and globally conscious institution but one that plays a role in preserving and developing Korea s unique culture. DEAN S WELCOME Welcome to Korea University s Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS). The GSIS of Korea University was launched in 1991 as part of the Korean government s globalization drive with 88 students and 8 faculty members. Now, including the Division of International Studies (DIS), there are about 600 brilliant students and 60 superlative faculty members drawn from all over the world. This unique and diverse community from the global environment provides forwardlooking and top-notch learning opportunities. The GSIS of Korea University offers interdisciplinary programs that encompass many disciplines pertaining to International Commerce, International Development & Cooperation, International Peace & Security, and Area Studies. The interdisciplinary nature of GSIS means that the program is intimately linked with other programs not just inside of Korea University but beyond the campus as well. Hence, GSIS of Korea University offers a series of extracurricular programs such as dual degrees in overseas affiliated institutions, internship programs, summer programs abroad, and short executive programs for corporate clients among others. E stablished in 1991, the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) at Korea University is a leading academic institution in educating and nurturing young experts specialized in International Affairs. GSIS has contributed to training specialists in International Commerce, International Peace & Security, International Development & Cooperation, Area Studies, and Korean Studies. In 1996, Korea University GSIS became one of the top five graduate schools of International Studies in Korea by being awarded on the five-year national grant program from the Ministry of Education in Korea. KOREA UNIVERSITY DEGREE PROGRAMS GSIS offers a range of graduate programs combining both coursework and research. Master of Arts (M.A.) DEPARTMENT OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES The Department of International Studies aims to educate and train specialists in analyzing and evaluating international affairs, incorporating a variety of socio-political and economic perspectives. The current emphasis is on the following intellectual themes: International Development & Cooperation International Commerce International Peace & Security Area Studies International Development & Cooperation This program deals with relevant issues in international development. Students will explore various aspects of interactions among states, international organizations, and individuals in reducing poverty and providing sustainable development. The offered courses include Multilateral and Regional Cooperation for Economic Development, International Development Organizations, Water & Development in East Asia, and Sustainable Development & International Development. International Commerce The goal of this program is to provide students with an enhanced understanding of international commerce within the process of globalization. Relevant courses will equip students with the skills, knowledge and experiences necessary in the fields of trade, finance, business and marketing. A wide range of relevant courses include: Macroeconomics, Strategic Management, Electronic Commerce, Multilateral and Regional Cooperation for Economic Development, Foreign Direct Investment, and Money and Banking. International Peace & Security This program provides rigorous and policy-related courses in Global Politics with a special focus on International Peace and Security. A series of courses on international peace and security include: World Politics, International Negotiation, Comparative Foreign Policy, History of International Relations, International Relations in East Asia, Approaches to International Peace, North- South Korea Relations, International Law and Human Rights. Area Studies The Area Studies program offers students the opportunity of developing a deep and broad understanding of issues related to a variety of regional areas. Some exemplary courses include: Contemporary North America, Contemporary East Asia, Contemporary Europe, Understanding East Asian Civilization, East Asian Economies, The U.S. Economy, European Economies, International Relations of North America, International Relations of East Asia, International Relations of Europe/Russia, and Korea-U.S. Relations. DEPARTMENT OF KOREAN STUDIES The Department of Korean Studies at GSIS aims to equip international and domestic students with an enhanced understanding of Korea, including its contemporary social modernization, and economic development. GSIS offers both two-year Master s degree and one-year diploma. Although all the courses in the program are taught in English, a high level of Korean language and reading courses are available in Korean for students who want to have intensive training in the Korean language. Current courses include: Modern History of Korea, Social Movement and Political Change, Social Problems in Korea, Korean Economy, Korean Cinema in the Global Context, and Dynamics of Korean Management.

KOREA UNIVERSITY SPECIAL PROGRAMS EXCHANGE PROGRAMS KOICA-KU GSIS International Development Program The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) KU GSIS International Development Program aims to educate government officials from developing countries in order to understand the practices and experiences of the socio-economic development in Korea. KIEP-KU GSIS Graduate Program for Area Studies (GPAS) The Graduate Program for Area Studies (GPAS) is a special program for Area Studies sponsored by the Korea Institute of International Economic Policy (KIEP), a government-funded research institution in Korea. This program is designed for students who want to study specific regions and countries, including Southeast Asia, Japan, and Africa, by awarding a scholarship and financially supporting internships in Southeast Asia. The Graduate School of Asian - Pacific Studies, Waseda University The Graduate School of International Development, Nagoya University The School of International Service, American University Fudan University Kobe Unversity Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) GSIS offers the Ph.D program to enable qualified applicants to pursue advanced research in the field of International Studies. Proposed projects are strongly encouraged to be part of an interdisciplinary / multidisciplinary nature. DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMS School of International Service, American University (Washington D.C.) The School of International Service-KU GSIS Dual Degree Program accommodates a maximum of three students per academic year. Students who complete all the requirements for the dual degree program will be awarded the Master of Arts in International Affairs at American University and the Master of Arts in International Studies at Korea University. CAMPUS Asia Program The objective of this project is to train graduate students to become risk management experts who can deal with global issues through a regionally oriented cooperative framework. The participating universities consist of Korea University in South Korea, Fudan University in China, and Kobe University in Japan. International Commerce This program targets young scholars interested in the field of International Commerce. The miraculous development can be largely attributed to its success in international trade. As such, GSIS has particular expertise in trade and FDI as well as specializing in both macro and micro-approaches to aid scholars in conducting cutting-edge research. Possible research topics in International Commerce include Multilateral & Regional Trade Relations, Foreign Direct Investment, Strategic Management, and Electronic Commerce. International Cooperation Being the prime example of rapid economic growth and development as well as the world s first recipient-turned-donor country, the Republic of Korea is a leader of development studies in East Asia. This program targets young scholars interested in cutting-edge research in the field of International Development & Cooperation. From global macro issues to carefully-crafted micro research, the school offers specialities in a number of research fields including International Trade & Development, Multilateral & Regional Cooperation, International Organizations, Sustainable Development, Water & Development, Poverty & Inequality, and Gender.

Summer Programs The Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University The Academy of International Trade and Investment Law, Macao European Summer Institute, Prague Internships GSIS encourages students to undertake an internship that provides practical experience in their future careers. Many students have had opportunities to undertake internship in a variety of international institutions such as the UN, the Asian Development Bank, international NGOs, government organizations, research centers, and private corporations. To earn credits, internships must be full-time for a minimum of two months. ADMISSION PROCEDURES Requirements Master of Arts (M.A.) Applicants must possess a Bachelor s degree or equivalent, or be in their final undergraduate semester with an excellent academic record. He or she must also be qualified in accordance with the entry requirements as specified on the KU-GSIS website. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Applicants must possess a Master s degree and excellent academic records in addition to the above mentioned requirements. Scholarship GSIS students may pursue scholarships and funds provided under the auspices of the central and local government as well as the private sector. GSIS also extends partial financial support to students in selective cases to meet costs of extramural intensive academic training and internship programs. All international students at GSIS will be awarded a scholarship (50 to 100 percent of tuition fee) based on their academic performance. In addition, the school offers a special international scholarship sponsored by other institutions such as POSCO, one of the world s leading steel companies.
