2 Master Programs Structure of degree programs FOR 2014: The usual progression for an international student who does not have the equivalent to a degree of Bachelor with first or second class Honours from an Australian University is to complete a 1 year Graduate Diploma (available to all streams) as an articulated program into the 1 year Master degree program. Therefore, the usual time it takes to complete the Master degree is two (2) years. However, depending on the academic background and working experience each application is considered on its merits and may either be offered a 1 year, 1.5 year or 2 year program. Please note we will carefully consider each application and make an academic decision on whether they meet our minimum entry requirements and offer the appropriate program accordingly. No student will be admitted directly to the one year Master degree who does not meet our minimum academic entry requirements. Note: A Bachelor degree with Honours is equivalent to at least a 3 year undergraduate degree PLUS one full academic year undertaking independent research (15,000 20,000 words) and advanced coursework units. Only those students with an excellent GPA in their Bachelor degree are invited to take up an Honours year. International students must also complete the five week Academic Preparatory Program prior to the beginning of their degree program. General Admission Requirements for a 1 year Master degree: *** (please ensure you check individual degree programs for specific prerequisites) Applicants should normally hold: (1) qualifications equivalent to a degree of Bachelor with first or upper second class Honours from an Australian University, (2) a Graduate Diploma in [equivalent field to the Master degree] awarded by the Australian National University with Merit or Distinction; (3) qualifications equivalent to a degree of Bachelor from an Australian University and substantial relevant work experience, as determined by the Delegated Authority; or (4) an equivalent combination of postgraduate study in [the equivalent field of study] and relevant work experience, as determined by the Delegated Authority. 4 ACADEMIC PREPARATORY PROGRAM Incoming international students undertake a preparatory program of 5 weeks prior to the commencement of formal coursework. This program is offered twice a year, in January and June. Preparatory programs were introduced in recognition of the fact that many new students have not studied in an Australian university before have been away from formal studies for a significant period of time may take time to adjust to the academic culture and expectations of postgraduate study may not have English as a first language The program begins with an orientation week. The aim of this week is to ensure that the students' immediate social and cultural needs are met and that they begin to establish personal and academic networks. The orientation week therefore includes administrative, accommodation, health and welfare sessions, as well as introductions to staff, the campus and facilities. Orientation week is followed by preparation for coursework. The preparatory program is designed to introduce new students to the academic terminology, issues, skills, expectations and culture they will encounter during their graduate coursework. Students can develop or refresh skills required of them in statistics, economics and computing/word processing (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Endnote Plus). The academic and research skills component comprises cultural issues relating to living and learning in Australia, the language of discourse in different disciplines, critical analysis, logic and argument, research and referencing skills, academic writing, study skills and oral presentation skills. It is expected that by the end of the preparatory program students will be familiar with formal coursework expectations and with teaching styles and resources. It is also expected that they will have confidence in their ability to achieve postgraduate academic success in their studies. Preparatory programs not only enable us to inform students about the academic environment they will encounter, but also enable us to identify problems or issues they have and to monitor their transition in the adjustment period prior to the commencement of formal coursework. The preparatory programs have been significant in ensuring that students adjust to postgraduate studies with greater ease and confidence. CRAWFORD SCHOOL, ANU 6/11/13 4 of 10

Graduates from this course have very high-level analytical skills required in government administration, and are prepared for positions as senior program managers or senior program advisers in government organisations, for senior government relations positions in nongovernment organisations, and for positions managing cross-national programs in international organisations. The size of the Crawford School's enrolment in these two degree programs is evidence that the educational market knows where policy and administration students will get a high quality educational experience. The Crawford School s programs in public policy and public administration are exclusive: they do not enroll even the brightest new graduates unless they have had relevant work experience. Thus, the policy and administration student body is not only well-educated it is also experienced in managing problems in the real world. The teaching staff includes a blend of internationally-regarded academics and experienced Australian government officials, bringing students into contact with leading-edge knowledge about international trends in policy and administration.
