MOTIVATION FOR NEW DEGREE DESIGNATIONS nfl 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 2.5 The Department of Construction Management first took the traditional S-year honours-level programme into review several years ago, in anticipation of the SAQA and NQF requirements. At that time, according to advice received from the UPE Registrar (Academic), based on information from the Department of National Education, it would not have been possible to obtain approval for a new name for the proposed first degree of 3 years' duration. tt was therefore decided to utilise the existing UPE degree name of B Bdg A (Afrikaans: B Bouk), with the endorsement Construction Management, for the new first degree in the Construction Management programme. The curriculum would be almost identical to that of the then existing first three years of the S-year curriculum, which was to be phased out. Approval for the proposals was obtained from all necessary UPE and other authorities and the B Bdg A (Constr Man) has been offered since 1998. The rules and curricula for the post-graduate BSe (Constr Man) deoree and the post-graduate Diploma in Construction Management were approved in 1999. Some work on syllabi and programme structure still has to be finalised and will be completed early in 2000. Each of these two post-graduate programmes follow on the 3-year B Bdg A degree. The status, content and standard of the new structure, i.e. B Bdg A (Constr Man) plus is identical to the previous S-year (honourslevel) structure and is that which currently holds accreditation. 2t...
-2-2.6 At a meeting of the Committee of Heads of University Construction Management programmes, held at the BIFSA offices iil Midrand on 19 August 1999, two other Universities reported that they were also preparing to offer a two-stage qualification and certain diploma options, in'order to comply with the SAQA and NQF requirements. lt was also reported that their programme changes and degree names had been approved by the Department of Education. 2-7 Two of the remaining three Universities indicated that they were giving some thoughto following a similaroute.
