Acceptance and boarding Please take note that not all applicants for a specific field of study will be accepted should they comply with the minimum requirements for the course. The reason is that the University has a limited capacity and that most applicants are subject to a selection process. The same rule applies for hostel application. 3 Faculty of THEOLOGY Introduction The Faculty of Theology comprises three schools that each represents a specific study field: School of Ancient Language and Text Studies; School of Ministers Training; and School of Biblical Counselling and Ministry Admission Requirements National Senior Certificate with university admission; APS score of at least 24 (BA), 24 (BTh) and 24 (BDiv); Applicants without admission who are older than 23 years and who qualify for age-based exemption may apply for exemption. The University will help these students with their applications to the SA Matriculation Board; and Prospective ministers must check the requireme Study fields The following qualifications and curriculums are offered in the Faculty of Theology: study period is three (3) years. This qualification can be obtained in one of several programmes, namely: BTh in Biblical Languages This programme offers a fundamental introduction to and overview of the Christian theology and ministry, with a focus on the Biblical languages (Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic) and Latin. This curriculum articulates upwards to the Honours BTh and the Honours BA in Ancient Languages. The BTh in Biblical Languages does not equip the student for a career as an independent qualification, but provides the essential foundation for further qualifications that lead to a career, namely: Admission to Honours BTh and the further qualifications Baccalaureus Theologiae / Bachelor of Theology (BTh) Method of presentation and duration of qualification The qualification is offered on a full-time basis in English and in Afrikaans on the Potchefstroom Campus, while cooperation agreements exist with certain training institutions, where the qualification is also presented off-campus. More details on this can be obtained from the Faculty of Theology. The minimum

4 required to become a minister of the Scriptures in certain churches; Admission to Honours BA in Ancient Languages and the further postgraduate qualifications required to become a lecturer/ researcher in Latin, Greek or the Semitic languages; and Admission to Honours BA in Bible Translation and the further postgraduate qualifications required to become a Bible translator. BTh in Biblical and Church Ministry This programme offers a fundamental introduction to and overview of the Christian theology and ministry, with a focus on Church Ministry. This programme articulates upwards to the Honours BTh. The BTh in Church Ministry does not equip the student for a career as an independent qualification, but provides the essential foundation for further qualifications that lead to a career, namely: Admission to Honours BTh with specialisation in Church Ministry and Practical Theology. Such an Honours BTh and possible further qualifications in Church Ministry/Practical Theology are required to be involved in church ministry to a congregation in some capacity.

5 BTh in Pastoral Counselling and Psychology This programme is aimed at persons who want to qualify themselves as pastoral counsellors. The programme provides access to postgraduate studies with specialisation in Psychology and/or Pastoral for professional counsellors, as well as to the PGTC. The subjects in the qualification include Psychology, Biblical Studies, Ethics, Pastoral and Missiology. There is a major need for trained pastoral counsellors in our communities. The programme is suitable for persons who want to use a thorough training in Psychology to provide pastoral counselling to people with, for example, marital problems and social maladjustments and those who struggle with issues involving ethics. BTh in Child and Youth Ministry Hierdie program is saamgestel vir persone wat hulself wil bekwaam as kinder- en jeugbedieners. There is a major need for trained child and youth ministers in our communities. Baccalaureus Artium / Bachelor of Arts (BA) This qualification is offered on a full-time basis in English and Afrikaans on the Potchefstroom Campus. The minimum duration of the study period is three (3) years. This qualification can be obtained in the following programme, namely: BA in Ancient Languages This programme offers a fundamental introduction to and overview of the ancient languages (Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic and Latin). This curriculum articulates upwards to the Honours BA in Ancient Languages and the Honours BA in Bible Translation. The BA in Ancient Languages does not equip the student for a career as an independent qualification, but provides the essential foundation for further qualifications that lead to a career, namely: Admission to Honours BA in Ancient Languages and the further postgraduate qualifications required to become a lecturer/ researcher in Latin, Greek or the Semitic languages; Admission to Honours BA in Bible Translation and the further postgraduate qualifications required to become a Bible translator. This programme also uses the study of ancient texts as point of departure to focus on: the cultural background for understanding the Bible, Tenak and Qur an the description and explanation of modern religious phenomena,

6 ancient artefacts that include mythology, art and literature, words and concepts to be used and understood in Law, Botany and Medicine. Baccalaureus Divinitatis / Bachelor of Divinity (BDiv) This qualification is a professional four-year degree that is offered only on a full-time basis in Afrikaans and in English on the Potchefstroom Campus. This programme offers a fundamental introduction to and overview of the Christian theology and ministry, with a focus on the Biblical languages (Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic) and the practice of Congregational Ministry. The subject list for the programme is suitable for training students from the Reformed Churches in South Africa (RCSA) and other denominations. This curriculum articulates sideways to the Postgraduate Diploma in Christian Theology, the Honours BA in Ancient Languages and the Honours BA in Bible Translation; and upwards to the MTh. The BDiv qualification does not equip the student for a career in all churches as an independent qualification, but provides the essential foundation for further qualifications that lead to a career, namely: Admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in Christian Theology, the Honours BTh and the further qualifications required to become a minister of the Scriptures in certain churches; Admission to Honours BA in Ancient Languages and the further postgraduate qualifications required to become a lecturer/ researcher in Latin, Greek or the Semitic languages; and Admission to Honours BA in Bible Translation and the further postgraduate qualifications required to become a Bible translator.
