The application process remains the same as it is for all prospective students Master s Degree Frequently Asked Questions: Incoming Students What should I know about advising? All incoming MA students in counseling are required to attend the New Student Orientation and Advising Day typically held the April of the year of admission. Incoming students are assigned an advisor who is identified in their admission letter. Students should not register for any classes without first corresponding with their assigned advisor. How often should I meet with my advisor? After the New Student Orientation and Advising Day, students should meet with their assigned advisor some time during their first Fall semester for a formal meeting to complete the projected Program of Study. Can I change my advisor? Yes- the Student Handbook outlines the proper protocol for changing your advisor. How long will it take to complete the program? The typical time frame for completion of the program is 2-3 years. The main factor in time of completion is the number of courses a student takes upon admission. Students who plan to complete the program in 2 years must start during the first summer session. Completion of the program depends on various factors: the student s success in coursework, course offerings, and the clinical experiences. The Department of Counseling and University do have limitations on the number of graduate level courses that a student can take at any one time.

5 When and what time are courses offered? Courses are offered during the day & evening hours Monday through Thursday however most courses are offered during the evening hours typically from 5:30pm -8:15pm. A select number of classes are offered: on the weekend, on-line or as a hybrid course. A hybrid course will meet both in person and on-line. Can I attend Part-time? Yes-many students in our program attend on a part time basis-just remember you have 6 years to complete your degree from the time you take your initial class that is applied to your degree. If I have taken graduate courses at another University, how many hours can I transfer? The Graduate school will only allow you to transfer 6 (six) credit hours. Those hours cannot have been applied to another degree. The requested transfer hours must also be reviewed and approved by the Graduate School and the Department of Counseling. Is there any financial assistance available? The graduate school web pages have complete information about graduate assistantships, which are paid, part-time positions on campus. The Graduate School and the Department of Counseling will post available openings for Graduate Assistantships- BUT it is the responsibility of the student to complete the application, contact the department advertising for the Graduate Assistantship. The Department of Counseling will not place any students in a Graduate Assistantship position. Other Questions? If you have other questions, please contact Dr. Valerie G. Balog at (vbalog@uncc.edu) or at (704) 687-8268.
