The main theme of The Second Research Methods Summer School for Research Students is Advancing Tourism and Hospitality Research. This one-week Summer School aims at equipping research students with recent advances in research methodologies and enhancing their research abilities in solving complex research problems. A distinctive feature of the Second Research Methods Summer School is that the lectures and tutorials will place a greater emphasis on the international best practices in tourism research. Students will also be exposed to critical reviews of the published studies so that they can gain insights into the frontiers of tourism research. This Summer School opens to all research students who are pursuing their PhD studies in the field of tourism and hospitality from reorganized universities. The host institution, SHTM at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is one of the major hospitality and tourism schools in the world established in 1979. In 2009, the Journal of Hospitality and 1
Tourism Research ranked us second in the world amongst the major academic institutions in hospitality and tourism based on research and scholarly activities. SHTM has more than 60 academic staff from 20 countries and is currently training more than 100 doctoral students in Hong Kong and China. The co-organizer, School of Tourism Management (STM) at Sun Yat-Sen University, founded in 2004, is a leading institution providing excellent tourism education at both undergraduate and graduate levels in China. Many of its academic staff are also renowned academic both within and outside of China. STM has been one of the Knowledge Network Members of the World Tourism Organization since 2007. 1. Eligibility, Application Procedures and Related Issues 4.1 Eligibility (a) Current PhD students or Post-doctoral research fellows with research interests in tourism and hospitality. (b) An eligible applicant should be recommended by his/her supervisor(s) with the consent of the affiliated institution. (c) The applicant must submit a synopsis of his/her PhD thesis proposal of no more than 800 words in English or Chinese to be reviewed by an expert panel. Only those whose proposals are accepted will be invited to attend the Summer School. 4.2 Application Procedures (a) Applicants must submit their completed application form and recommendation letter on or before 10 April 2015. The organizing committee will acknowledge receipt within five working days upon receipt of the completed application documents. (b) Applicants who have their eligibility confirmed are required to submit the synopses of their PhD thesis proposals by 28 April 2015. Postdoctoral Fellows can submit a research paper proposal of no more than 800 words. The cover page of synopsis should include the title of the research, name of author, affiliated institution, correspondence address, email address and acknowledgement if any. 3
(c) The main body of the synopsis should include the following information: Research Objectives, Scope and Background of Research, Methodology, Project Significance and Value and References. (d) The notification of successful applications will be sent out by email on or before 13 May 2015. 4.3 Registration Fee (a) The registration fee is HK$3,200 per person. This registration fee covers all lectures, workshops, seminars, field trips and the associated teaching and learning materials. (b) The applicants themselves will be responsible for the costs incurred in connection with their attendance of the Summer School, which include the transportation cost, accommodation, meals and insurance. The organizer has booked a fixed amount of 9- person suites in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Student Hall of Residence for the participants, subject to availability and on a first come first served basis. The Hall Management, however, reserves the right to make a final decision on room allocation. The accommodation cost is HK$200 per person per night. For meals, the participants may consider various options/restaurants at TST East where the School is located. 4.4 Methods of Payment (a) Online Credit Card Payment The Online Card Payment method accepts Visa and MasterCard (Worldwide Acceptance) and Union Pay card (issued by banks in the Chinese Mainland, and specified Union Pay credit cards issued in Hong Kong and Macau). However, credit cards like Diners Club and American Express are not accepted. Online payment website will be ready by March 2015. 4
