2 Certificate / Advanced Certificate in ISLAMIC FINANCE INTRODUCTION Global financial services industry has been much revolutionalized by the impacts of globalization and advancement in technology. To sustain Hong Kong s competitiveness, the financial services industry must be supported by well trained professionals. The HKSAR Policy Address by the Chief Executive highlighted the huge potential of developing Islamic finance and recommended the development of an Islamic bond (sukuk) market in Hong Kong. Islamic finance is a dynamic multi-disciplinary area of the international financial services sector with ample room for growth. However, financial services professionals in Islamic Finance must be well equipped with unique management skills and knowledge to ensure that all financial activities are carried out in line with Shariah principles and the related standard and guidelines established by governing bodies. Conventional finance practices do not always satisfy the Islamic rules. In view of the demand for people with demonstrable expertise in all the complex areas of Islamic finance, HKU SPACE and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) have collaboratively developed the Certificate in Islamic Finance programme and Advanced Certificate in Islamic Finance programme to help nourish skilled professionals in this growth market. PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES AND STRUCTURE Certificate in Islamic Finance The Certificate in Islamic Finance aims to provide students with knowledge in the fundamental concepts of Islamic law and contracts and its application to Islamic financial products. Development of Islamic capital market and various features of Islamic financial products would also be covered. Modules covered: Islamic Capital Markets and Instruments Islamic Commercial Law Advanced Certificate in Islamic Finance The Advanced Certificate in Islamic Finance aims to provide students with knowledge in the development and features of the Islamic financial systems and institution, including the associated financial and operational risks and Takaful banking products and services. The framework of financial reporting and auditing in Islamic financial institutions would also be introduced. Modules covered: Islamic Banking and Takaful Products and services Accounting for Islamic financial institutions PROGRAMME DELIVERY Each module in this part-time programme will be taught in 25 hours of lectures, workshops and seminars. Students should also access to e-learning activities. MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION Courses are taught in English.

3 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Certificate in Islamic Finance Applicants shall: (a) have gained in the HKCEE Grade E or above in 4 subjects, including Mathematics and level 2 or above in English Language* or equivalent, plus 2 years of working experience; OR (b) be aged at least 23 with at least 2 years of working experience. Applicants with other relevant qualifications will be considered on individual merits. Advanced Certificate in Islamic Finance Applicants shall: (a) (i) have gained in the HKCEE Grade E or above in 4 subjects, including Mathematics and level 2 or above in English Language* or equivalent, plus 2 years of working experience; OR (ii) be aged at least 23 with at least 2 years of working experience. AND (b) have completed Certificate in Islamic Finance programme offered by HKU SPACE. Applicants with other relevant qualifications will be considered on individual merits. * With effect from 2007, HKU SPACE recognizes Grade E previously awarded for English language (Syllabus B) (Grade C in English Language (Syllabus A)) at HKCEE as an acceptable alternative to Level 2 in this subject at HKCEE. ASSESSMENT Students will be assessed with both continuous assessments and an examination in each module. The continuous assessment will comprise assignments and test. The examination will be an online assessment provided by CIMA and administered by HKU SPACE. AWARD The award of Certificate in Islamic Finance/Advanced Certificate in Islamic Finance will be conferred upon students who have successfully fulfilled the following graduation requirements: (a) (b) (c) pass the continuous assessment of each module; AND pass the examination of each module by achieving 65% mark or above in the online assessment provided by CIMA; AND satisfy the 75% attendance requirement of each module PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION Graduates of the Advanced Certificate in Islamic Finance programme will be eligible to apply for the CIMA Certificate in Islamic Finance.

Fees paid by crossed cheque or bank draft should be made payable to HKU SPACE. 3. For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS if the course will start shortly. 4. If admission is on a first-come, first-served basis and if you do not hear from us before the course starts, you may assume that your application has been accepted, and should attend the course as scheduled. 5. If admission is by selection, then this receipt is not a guarantee that your application has been accepted. We will inform you of the result as soon as possible after the closing date for application. Unsuccessful applicants will be given a refund of course fee if already paid. 6. 6 COURSE FEE Course fee: HK$13,500 for each programme which cover two comprehensive study guides, fee for all relevant lectures, workshops and seminars, marking of assignments and the examination provided by CIMA. Note: 60 (each attempt) will be charged by CIMA for the third or more attempts of the online assessment of CIMA in each module.
