Game Design Introduction

What is a Game? Movie? no interaction, outcome fixed Toy? no goal, but still fun (players can develop own goals) Puzzle? (has goal + interaction ) But strategy and outcome is the same each time A computer game is a software program in which one or more players make decisions through the control of game objects and resources, in pursuit of a goal.

Game Design Potential Jobs Concept / Storyboard Artists These artists flesh out the game with sketches and paintings of characters, levels, vehicles, and other elements. Character Artists & Animators Character Artists work with 3D programs such as Maya or 3DS Max to produce the characters. Level Designers Level Designers are given sections or levels of the game, creating the environments that the player will interact in. Texture Artists Texture artists give the skins to levels and characters.

Game Design Potential Jobs (Cont.) Programmers Programmers work on the video game engine, AI, and anything pretty much that will make the game run. Sound / Audio There will be people working on the sound effects of the game, as well as the music that often is playing in the background. Professional Testers These people put in long hours to find bugs and other potential problems. Many use this job opportunity to get into video game design at the studio.

Demand for Game Designers According to the Game Developer Salary Survey 2011: Programming: average annual salary of $85,733. Art & Animation: $71,354. Game Design: the average salary $70,223. Production: average salary of $88,544. Audio: Sound designers and composers earned an average of $68,088, Quality Assurance: average salary of $49,009

Phone Apps What is a Mobile Phone? Device for Sending & Receiving Data Primarily Geared for Voice Can Send & Receive Other Data Types But now a Small Computer with good processing power and a good RAM size. So Apps can be used easily. A track of the Game Design program will be Phone Apps.

Associate Degree/Certificates We will start by establishing certificates in both campuses Associate degree in game design and simulation (UNM-Valencia).

Why STEM? Beyond the correlation to new jobs and sustainable economic growth, STEM provides the doorway to integration of Real World skills into core curriculum courses. Focus on workplace ready skills and core curriculum skills applied in Real World situations.

Math for Game Design Usually a lot math requirements : 15 Credits Calculus I Calculus II Calculus III Boolean Algebra Matrices & Vectors New Trends(GDC 2012): 6 Credits Calculus I Linear Equation System, Matrices, Vectors, and Boolean Algebra

Games That Put Math First Students can use virtual manipulative to develop solutions Student can personalize the experience by choosing a game character and a theme Pirates, Dinosaurs, Pets, or Pixie

Physics for Game Design Mechanics that reviews basic concepts and addresses aspects of rigid body dynamics, including kinematics, force, and kinetics. Applications Simulations

English: Technical Writing Game Plot Storyboarding Story telling Documentation More

Integrating Office Technology PowerPoint Games (Quiz show and Maze) Microsoft Word Asset construction (2D and 3D) Microsoft Excel Games (Crossword and Tic-Tac-Toe) Microsoft Paint or Open Office Draw Microsoft Clip Art Microsoft Sound Editor or Audacity Create Presentations, Brochures, Letters, Charts using Office products for marketing

Accreditation The Master s requirement for the faculty member is making the game design hiring process more difficult. The industry experience as an equivalent of the Master s degree

Articulation We are in the process of establishing the program and the certificates. As soon as the program and the certificates are approved by the two branches main campuses, articulations will be in place. These articulations will allow the students to transfer to UNM and NMSU and finish their bachelor degree in Computer Science, IFDM, creative media, Similar articulations will be discussed with other schools in the field.
