MASTER S PROGRAMMES 13 I ve learned how to think like a chemical engineer NAME MSC COUNTRY OF ORIGIN MOHAMMAD RUSYDI FATAHILLAH CHEMICAL ENGINEERING INDONESIA Hi, my name is Mohammad and I m studying Chemical Engineering. This is my second and final year here. Right now, I am doing my research in the Sustainable Process Technology group. I am working on synthesizing high-value chemicals from biomass. The equipment here is sophisticated; I really like it. I decided to come to the University of Twente, because it has one of the best and most progressive research programmes in the field of sustainable process technology. I ve learned a lot here, especially about the way in which a chemical engineer thinks, solving complex problems by creating models and simulations. The process plant design assignment I did was another good experience. We worked on it with a company, so it looked like we were a group of consultants hired to do a real job. It was very challenging we had to utilize CO 2 to create high-rated chemicals. Living abroad is so different from studying at home. I ve made a lot of international friends. I did not have any difficulties adjusting. I joined the Indonesian Students Association (PPIE) and made good friends there, too. We are like cultural ambassadors, putting on events to promote Indonesia and share our country s great food, unique dances and so on. Another thing has happened here that I can hardly believe: I found my life companion here in the Netherlands! If you are from Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, Greece, Germany, India or Romania, check the back of this brochure for our country-specific Facebook pages!

MASTER S DEGREES 24 This university has it all! NAME MSC COUNTRY OF ORIGIN CRISTIAN CIOBOTEA COMPUTER SCIENCE ROMANIA Salut! I m Cristian and I m 22 years old. After completing my Bachelor s studies in Bucharest, I decided it was time for a change. I looked at job opportunities and Master s programmes. Then I realized the answer was simple: study abroad! Europe offers lots of opportunities for studying. I began to filter programmes I was interested in, mostly IT-related. That s when I found out about the University of Twente. The University of Twente has it all. It has the biggest campus in the Netherlands. And the programme diversity here is huge. The Computer Science programme I m doing offers five tracks to choose from. That was one of the main attractions for me. Also, I imagined that in a vast research environment like this one it would be hard not to find whatever I was looking for. And I was right. Another positive fact for me was that the online information and application procedures are really clear. I live in the centre of Enschede. It takes me 15 minutes by bike to get to the campus. In the Netherlands, having a bike is a must! In the afternoons or evenings, I sometimes do extra activities, like swimming or going out. There are lots of student associations to choose from. Some focus on sports, others on studies or general fun. On campus, students are involved in almost everything: the bars and media shops are all run by students. In addition to my studies, I am currently a member of the International Marketing Department here. I assist other students interested in studying abroad. So if you have any questions, I m here to help! If you are from Romania, Brazil, Greece, Germany, India, Indonesia or Mexico, check the back of this brochure for our country-specific Facebook pages!

MASTER S PROGRAMMES 27 There are few universities where a business student can visit a nano lab and observe the process of nano-particle synthesis NAME MSC COUNTRY OF ORIGIN PAVEL CHOLAKOV BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION BULGARIA Hi, my name is Pavel Cholakov and I am doing a Master s in Business Administration. My main interest is entrepreneurship. In 2011, shortly after finishing my Bachelor s, I founded my first company and I am currently involved in several start-ups. I was looking for a university with a strong entrepreneurial culture. When I found the UT, I did not have to search any further. It was founded by entrepreneurs and has a vast amount of knowledge on the subject. The university works with many companies, strengthening their innovative power as well as the regional economy. The Venture Lab is Twente s very own growth accelerator for both start-ups and established companies, so this is the perfect environment and infrastructure for students like me. The UT is also one of the world s leading technological universities, partly because of the cutting-edge nanotechnology and biomedical engineering research conducted here. This unique blend of students with engineering, social science and business backgrounds is really appealing. There are not many universities where a business student can visit a nano lab and observe the process of nanoparticle synthesis and that s just one small example of the many different worlds you can explore here. Being accepted in the Master s Honours programme, called Change Leaders, has been really exciting. What sets it apart from other leadership-related programmes I have attended is that it combines cognitive and experiential development. We had amazing guest lecturers, but the icing on the cake was the individual coaching by professional leadership instructors. The Netherlands is a great country and it s fun to explore Dutch culture. Generally, Dutch people are openminded and liberal, but also set in their ways. As the saying goes, Come for the academics, stay for the people.

MASTER S PROGRAMMES 31 The professors here encourage you to challenge known theories NAME MSC COUNTRY OF ORIGIN BINGYING YANG COMMUNICATION STUDIES CHINA Hi, I m Bingying Yang. I m doing a double Master s programme in Communication Studies at the University of Twente and Peking University. Born and raised in China, I had never been abroad before coming to the Netherlands. I ve spent six months here now and I really like it so far. The first thing I noticed about the Netherlands was the fresh, clean air. For someone used to the polluted air of Beijing, it is a great break! The whole campus is a perfect balance of nature and innovation. The forests surrounding the campus remind me of landscapes from Miyazaki s movies, dreamy and mysterious. Whenever I feel tired and stressed, taking a walk there helps me relax, calm down and get new inspiration. Studying in a completely new environment is a little scary at first, but the atmosphere here is awesome. Most of the international students are open-minded and willing to share their stories and cultures. You can get to know the Dutch culture better and faster with the help of your Dutch buddy from the buddy programme for incoming international students. You learn things about values and cultures that you d never learn from the media or books. Easy travel throughout Europe adds to that. My trips to Portugal, France and Germany have given me the best memories of my life. I really appreciate how students and teachers interact here. The professors here are more like knowledgeable friends. They encourage you to speak up and challenge known theories, which fuels positive arguing and innovation. It s quite different from traditional teaching. I believe the attitudes I m developing as a student may benefit me more in the future than the knowledge I m acquiring.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION 41 MOST DUTCH PEOPLE UNDERSTAND ENGLISH The Netherlands is a small country and home to almost 17 million people. Many European capitals are within easy reach: Brussels is two hours away by train and a short flight from Amsterdam will take you to London, Paris, Madrid or Berlin. Most Dutch people speak, or understand, English. Public transport is well-organized and safe. To travel the Dutch way, of course, get a bicycle (we actually have more bikes than people in the Netherlands). During the introduction days for international students we will help you buy your very own bike. ENSCHEDE, A TYPICAL STUDENT CITY The city of Enschede, located in the east of the Netherlands near the German border, has a population of 158,000 one third of whom are students. The city boasts colourful weekly markets, bustling shopping streets and well-tended parks in fact, it is one of the greenest cities in the Netherlands, with a 52-kilometre walking and cycling route winding right through its green belt. But its student population gives the city its unique flair. Every day, you ll see students biking to their classes, reading on the banks of Rutbeek Lake or making merry in the Old Market pubs. Enschede is home to three higher education institutions: the University of Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences and the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts. The centre of student life is undoubtedly the University of Twente s unique campus (more about that on page 9). DON T MISS THESE EVENTS! BATAVIEREN RACE In the spring, about 7,500 students take part in the Batavieren Race, the largest relay race in the world. It ends on our campus, climaxing in Europe s largest student party. GREEN VIBRATIONS The on-campus Green Vibrations festival is held every year on Ascension Day - a celebration of music and dance, followed by an after-party in the Vesting Bar, right next door to the festival site. HOW ABOUT A PART-TIME JOB? As an international student in the Netherlands, you may want to take a part-time job to cover expenses, help you assimilate into Dutch society and gain some work experience.
