Vision for Big Data Value the Big Data market in Europe is estimated to grow at an annual rate of 32% over the period 2012-2016 Big Data Value estimated at 20 billion euro for the EU in 2020 Especially promising sectors include: Healthcare Mobility, transport and logistics Energy Public Sector Media and content Manufacturing and production Retail Environment NESSI & EC Software Engineering Workshop; 26 May 2014 8
Key Performance Indicators Number of large-scale experiments conducted Number of use cases supported by applications developed Many times faster data processing for deep analysis Number of resulting PhDs awarded Availability of metrics for measuring the quality and value of data assets. Number of standards influenced and supported Number of start-ups created as a result Investment made in exploitation of results Number of jobs created as a result of cppp activities NESSI & EC Software Engineering Workshop; 26 May 2014 9
Big Data Value Challenges Broaden the availability and accessibility of data sources Assess the economic value of data assets Develop Big Data technologies and tools Develop data-driven applications and business models Test and benchmarking technologies, applications, and business models Address the lack of skills and expertise Address the issues related to security and privacy NESSI & EC Software Engineering Workshop; 26 May 2014 10
Approach NESSI & EC Software Engineering Workshop; 26 May 2014 11
Technical Priorities Privacy and anonymisation mechanisms Deep analysis to improve data understanding Optimized architectures for analytics of data at rest and in motion Advanced visualisation and user experience Data management engineering NESSI & EC Software Engineering Workshop; 26 May 2014 12
The Data Value Chain NESSI & EC Software Engineering Workshop; 26 May 2014 13
Implementation This will lead to a contractual Public Private Partnership (cppp) The cppp work programme will comprise a variety of instruments including small to large: research and innovation Innovation support actions light house projects A Stakeholders Platform project will provide for guidance and governance of the programming cycle NESSI & EC Software Engineering Workshop; 26 May 2014 14
Programme Instruments Research and Innovation Actions will be collaborative projects with a duration typically ranging between 2 and 4 years and will be characterized by the technical excellence. Innovation actions will be used to provide quick results that do not require new research, but adoption of existing solutions by European companies. Lighthouse projects will consist of data-driven large scale demonstrations whose main objectives will be to create high level impact, visibility and awareness Coordination and Support Actions will be mainly used to ensure coordination and coherence along the cppp implementation and will provide support to activities that fall under the business, policy, regulatory and legal domains.
